What did you like about the film *The Breakfast Club* (1985) and with which characters could you identify, and why?

"... They didn't even have breakfast in the movie!"

I find it interesting that the stereotypes don't resonate as well today. In the mid 2000s that movie still hit hard.

I think that everyone should see a bit of every character in themselves. Either based on stereotype or what is revealed as the characters share with one another.

I remember studying this film as a young teen. It was an old film then, and that was a long time ago.

I was the age of the characters in the movie when the movie came out. I don't think the movie had any significant impact on our generation or culture or society, but it was extremely impactful on how we felt. Keep in mind that there was no world wide web or cell phones then, so the act of viewing a movie and sharing it with friends* was different than than it is now.

I don't feel changed by the movie, but I loved it. It felt rebellious and very relatable. And I had a major crush on Ally Sheedy.

People said Allison is a cool character and that people like Allison turned out to be good people in their experience.

"People like Allison"? Does that mean emo people (which we called goths back then)? Kleptos? Rebels? Loners? Outcasts?

*By "friends", I mean actual friends. We didn't have Facebook "friends" or "influencers" or Insta followers or tiktokkers or whatever else exists today. We shared things with a few people we liked, not uncountable people we would never meet or speak to.

Hughes had this really distinct visual style. Bright, vibrant, and kinda larger than life. He used it to take a look at slices of life that were, in the breakfast club, angsty as fuck. Most scenes are vivid, and the drama plays out in that almost candy coated world.

Since the cast was perfect for their roles, something else Hughes was great at imo, they managed to each fulfill their stereotype in a way that pops out of the screen. The very artificialiality of the cinematography and the almost cheesy costuming allows you to skip past a lot of immersion barriers and just enjoy the characters and dialogue.

Hughes was really good at that balance. The Breakfast Club is the best example of his vision. And, because it influenced so many other filmmakers and the industry, it’s an important one to watch from that perspective, even if it isn’t really going to resonate as well with someone born much later. Not that it can’t, or won’t at all, just that the entirety of teen living shifted post internet, and much of the gen Y range falls into that era.

I loved it but I couldn't resonate with a single character. I guess what takes me out of it is that, I've not once ever been with a group of so many distinct personalities that just got along together in some way or fashion. It just wasn't my kind of school and what I grew up with.

And I do remember the scene that I believe has been cut in many releases since, about when Bender was looking between Claire's legs. I think it cuts a chunk of it when he was getting closer and closer, made her make a sound and then when the principal left, Bender got up and she started beating on him.

I “watched” this movie on TV a few times as a kid in the 90s. I always hated it because it didn’t make sense to me. Many moons later I realized why, they cut out the part where they all smoke weed together to make it ok to play on TV. Seems like a pretty critical plot point to cut out!

I didn't like the movie at all and I wasn't close to being any of those characters.
