What’s everybody doing? Keeping your beans on the driveway or bringing a glass vial down from the ISS every morning?
My roaster ships in resealable paper bags with one-way valves. I could see myself sticking some tape over those, but that’s about it. I’m done with a bag in about four weeks anyway.

I figure if the bag with the valve is good enough to ship it in and/or keep it on the store shelf for a couple months, it’s fine for my cabinet. I do have a canister with a one-way valve that’ll get almost all of the air out, but that’s for a 2-lb bag that I won’t necessarily be getting through in a short amount of time.

I’m with you, but it looks like that may not always be the case. Speaking of cabinet though, I leave bags on the counter and may move them into a cabinet instead. Slightly cooler.

A bag is gone in a week or so. I store it in the bag it comes in, as tightly wrapped as I can get it. It’s usually roasted within the same week that I get it. If I have a backlog I keep sealed containers in the freezer. If I buy bulk for some reason I’ll vacuum pack it into smaller size and freeze jt.

I tend to buy a lot of beans at one time. As such, the ones that won't be immediately opened for consumption will get tape covering the one way valve and tossed into the freezer.
The ones that are opened immediately (one for the office and one for home), get placed into a sealable container in their original bag.
I've been doing this for years without any apparent problems.
Is is better than just using the original bag? No idea. Probably not much better just using the original bags but the containers were not expensive and they have been used for years so the long term cost is practically nothing.

Lance seems to suggest your approach. You’re certainly making a better seal, the same way that Swiss cheese is full of holes but you can’t actually see through a block of it.

i go through a 350g bag of coffee in around 7 weeks. have tried a bunch of storage techniques, rn i just parcel it into a few 100g portions and stack those in the airscape

Funny, I just finished watching this video before opening Lemmy and seeing this post.
Coffee storage is an area I want to get into but haven’t yet. As usual, Lance has brought to light some really fascinating scientific research into the coffee community. I’m not nearly good enough at coffee to benefit from his techniques but I really enjoy hearing them.

Well, me too. Haha. I think a lot of his stuff goes into diminishing returns, but he seems to make a point to give you a grounded option as well.
In this one he’s providing enough context around the research for people to be able to decide how much they care, he’s not putting out “5 things coffee scientists say you need to do - number 4 will shock you” content.

Yeah, I totally agree. I’m a big fan of his from the perspective of learning but I rarely use anything he talks about, or at least not to the degree he talks about. I also love how he’s not super clickbait-y like you mention. I’ve got a ton of respect for him as a content creator.
