oh my god, no one is doing this.

"walking into groups of ice agents" What a ridiculous basement dweller fantasy.

The "group of ice agents" almost certainly know and recognize each other.

The guys with their face always covered and which are hiring left and right? The very smart and situationally aware agents?

RumorsOfLove@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 34 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Nice astroturf. Keep it going because anybody stupid enough to try this is safer in custody for trying to pull a Dean Winchester than loose ready to pull another Joshua Jahn.

Ice have no badge on display, many have no identification, and wear masks. That's like saying everyone in a city is impersonating a federal officer because an officer is undercover.

Tiresia@slrpnk.net · 16 pts · 21h

Yes, any reasonable law-respecting ICE officer would recognize you've done nothing wrong and let you go.

:::: spoiler Extra info for people with below-average reading comprehension:

No ICE officer is reasonable and law-respecting. I am implying that Blue_Morpho's comment is functionally useless even though it is true, because they will do what they want regardless of the law or what is reasonable.

There is a high chance people who try this will be beaten up or put in a concentration camp for months even if they are legally innocent.

How would this be a Dean Winchester thing to do?

Oni_eyes@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 23h (1 reply)

Regularly impersonates federal officers?

Lumidaub@feddit.org · 3 pts · 23h

Oh that part. Sam (and other people in their orbit) does that too though so I was looking for why Dean in particular. Alright :)

Ice/cops meet up beforehand and often use identifiers to tell who is with them.

FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 28 pts · 1d

Counter point, they are very stupid.

mechoman444@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 14h (1 reply)

This claim appears to be completely unsubstantiated.

I can find evidence of ICE operations in Minneapolis, protesters monitoring ICE activity, and even instances of people impersonating ICE agents. What I cannot find is any credible evidence for the very specific story being circulated here: protesters supposedly disguising themselves in tactical gear, infiltrating groups of ICE agents, accusing individual agents of being impostors, causing the agents to start fighting one another, and then escaping. There are no identified incidents, dates, locations, police reports, videos, or reputable news reports corroborating it.

The original post itself is doing the classic social-media thing of saying "reportedly" without actually reporting who supposedly witnessed it or where it supposedly happened.

It's entirely possible someone posted this as a joke or satire, but there's nothing in the screenshot indicating that it's satire, and people are clearly sharing it as though it were a real tactic that is "happening nationwide."

So, unless someone can produce actual evidence of an incident, this should be treated as an unsupported claim, not a factual account of ICE protests. The fact that Patton Oswalt is sarcastically asking people not to share it doesn't magically make the underlying claim true either.

Gorillazrule@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 6h

The entire point is that it's fake. The point of spreading it, is that it causes paranoia within ICE. People will start suspecting each other if they see someone they don't recognize. And because it's entirely fake nobody (besides the ICE agents) is at risk.

It seems that Agents Provocateur can work BOTH ways.

Day late, dollar (and 380 days and nearly 100 deaths) short, but this is good fun until they mandate the pigs to be microchipped.
