that series was a lot of fun when it was a detective show. and then they decided to make them a couple and shifted focus to that and it wasn't it. It is wild how little of that kind of Bruce Willis acting style remained by the late 90s.

I completely agree.

That couple-but-not-really ingredient was also present in X-Files and Stargate SG1, and it worked very well.
