Why would they take social responsibility, when it’s more profitable to have no safeguards?
These idiots won’t admit capitalism is based off increasing profits at any cost to the planet or living beings. Regulations are merely an inconvenience they want to minimize or eliminate to maximize capital gains.
They only want regulations when they’re used to punish or suppress their competitors, or to reward themselves.

On the one side this is obviously a paid off man.
On the other, how on earth is a government that doesnt remotely understand technologies supposed to effectively legislate it.
Like I agree it has to try, but this is one of its worst capabilities.

In a saner world, they would partner with technology and information security watchdogs, get briefs, and advice on how to approach issues and tackle things in a way that are forward thinking and updatable.

No representative can be expected to be an expert on everything. Their main job is to listen to people and be the central authority figure which brings those experts’ consultation into law. They do that pretty well, except that the only people they listen to are the ones who pay them a lot of money instead of to the bulk of the population who elected to them.
At some point, you’re putting your faith in someone you think is an expert. That’s ok, except when the people you’ve chosen are so clearly the worst possible people to choose of the bunch. The conflict of interest issues alone are enough to write the whole thing off and the ideas are terrible to boot.

Ideally a government’s people aren’t 20 years behind the curve and actively sabotaging the fields of science and medicine. Functioning governments can legislate just fine. This is basically weaponized incompetence at government scale.

The AI companies want regulations. They don’t have a moat. Regulatory capture is their best option.

Tech companies must be primarily culpable for AI safety. Congress should legislate or assign regulators or create a tech regulatory agency, but because AI itself can't and won't be punished, then its creator and keeper must be held accountable for whatever evil it has been given the ability to carry out. Congress should definitely not just stand by and do nothing; they should be doing one thing and it's forcing these dipshit tech bros to control the monsters they birthed unto us all. I'm not sure what Mikey thinks the point of government is if not to protect the people from this sort of thing.

As a driver of a car, I pledge to take full responsibility for my driving safety. The police will no longer be involved with enforcing any driving safety laws against me as I will be doing that for myself. This is going to be fun!
