For those that don't want to read the wiki - the ballot led to consistent errors since the second button was for the top line on the right side instead of the second choice down the list: Gore.
okay but like, this is obvious no? the arrows are clearly pointing to the circle. the two columns are clearly offset? am I going crazy, how can you fuck this up?
Since you said that I took a look again and decided it is in fact obvious ordering.
But it's weird to me that there's no 1 or 2 (if I can say such a thing without being laughed at again for not knowing the context of a historical foreign election 😔)
And unfortunately, there's no benefit to making it confusing-enough that some people don't get it; there's no way to tell someone entered their data wrong and thus their vote should be discarded. Democracy means we gotta make voting as simple as possible
Messup one is the alternating "butterfly" design on the ballot as shown in the image. It was deemed too confusing because the candidates aren't listed in a single order.
Messup two is a hole punch was used to punch holes in the central area on the ballot, but it wasn't very good at its job. The hole punch system left a bunch of ballots with only partially punched holes, and "hanging chads" where the punched out piece of paper is still attached and dangling. During the recounts the election board had to make a bunch of individual decisions on how to interpret these ballots.

The election was incredibly close and came down to Florida to determine the winner. This was the ballot in Florida. Many people erroneously voted for Pat Buchanon because of the poor design
There was another famous point of contention around hanging chads. I won't go into detail, but if you ever want to know if someone is older than ~35, say the words hanging chad. They'll know what it means
