I think the reason Amodei and his gang are suddenly interested in an AI slowdown has nothing to do with preserving humanity and everything to do with providing an excuse for a bailout when the bubble pops.
"Uh-oh, we had to take a safety break and now we need taxpayer dollars to prevent the collapse of the US economy!"

I don't think there will be a justification. They'll merely put their hand out and receive all the money they want. We have entered a stage where billionaires are so untouchable, so brazenly unconcerned with the rest of humanity, the only "excuse" we'll get is a bored shrug.

The thing is, AI is such a money pit I'm not sure it can be bailed out.
Give them one hundred billion dollars and they'll be back in a couple of months for more.

They know that. It's the reason X's bullshit is listed on the NASDAQ. They will just skim from everyone's 401k until everuthing collapses.
I'm just ready for cheap deals on hardware.

those gpus and high bandwidth ram aren't really useful to most people.... like, you'd need a rack server because the gpus don't have integral cooling, or even hdmi/dp out....

Trump is so confident in his election cheating that he doesn't have to worry about popularity. The Iran war is perhaps the most unpopular war in American history (and that is saying a lot).
As for lending power, Trump could always switch on the printing presses and let inflation go wild (another unpopular thing that Trump views with indifference).
I think you are more optimistic about Trump's susceptibility to the will of the voters.

I get it, but as much as he would like to be the president is not yet a dictator.
He might not care but the congress, house of reps might (as weak as they have been) i mean think of this he didnt get his way on intrest rates or money for said Irán war, and a bailout is not somthing a president can do on his own athority.
Again he has pushed these limits, but there are limits even in a real dictatorship there are limits.
