Woo Hoo!!!! Bot progress.

A few more tweaks before I can do the daily thread reliably, but the main hurdle has been overcome. It's alive!

So update to the eye patch saga - my bf came to pick me up for dinner last night wearing a pirate hat. Love his sense of humour. I then wore the pirate hat to work this morning, just to really lean into this. It's been a great laugh, thankfully my eye is already feeling much better and the hat is now just a decoration on my desk.

baconmash@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (1 reply)

my eye is already feeling much better

Fortunately! Or else not only will you have to wear a pirate hat. You'll have to surgically replace your left hand with a hook.

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 3y

Q: Why is pirating so addictive? A: They say once ye lose yer first hand, ye get hooked!

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

If people ask what happened you should say you lost an eye in a game of gin rummy. Eye eye.

SpinMeAround@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y

So far I've claimed shark attack, Toby finally losing his cool and also just "Dragon."

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 16 pts · 3y

So today I got a pay rise and am celebrating with ginger beer for grown ups while I wait for the grocery delivery. Am feeling very grateful, fortunate and appreciated.

omoikiri@aussie.zone · 16 pts · 3y

Reading through my second full draft of my thesis. And you know what? Sometimes, sometimes I can be really smart.

I also won $500 presenting my research yesterday, which was great. Promptly had to spent $200 of it on petrol and two (2) make up products, which was not so great.

whatisthislifeilead@aussie.zone · 16 pts · 3y (15 replies)

Was hearing stories of people 'queuing for 10 hours' for Taylor Swift tickets only to realise they meant somehow queuing online for that time? You know *back in my day * I camped outside the ticketek office overnight to get Nine Inch Nails concert tickets - ah how times change!

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 3y (13 replies)

Hah.... My glory days story is camping out for Neil Young tickets at some random chemist/Ticketmaster outlet in the north. Ended up 5th town centre at the Myer Music Bowl and it was the jam. That and happening upon a free ticket to RATM as I walking around Festival Hall. That was a life changing show ...

whatisthislifeilead@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y (3 replies)

It was a simpler time! I remember my housemate had came home from a night out and I convinced her to stay up and queue for last release Big Day Out tickets at 6am. I think she regretted it once she got there but she ended up getting a ticket and we all had an awesome time so - worth it in the end! Pretty sure it was when Beastie Boys were headlining.

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y

Oooh, I remembered another one. I went and saw Tool (at Festival Hall I think), then went straight to a formal-ish house party/dinner party afterwards in swanky multi level place in East Melbourne. I stank, my shirt was ripped, I had one shoe on, and I couldn't hear a thing so was talking really loud apparently. I was not a hit at the party.

the_procrastinata@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

That was a great show. I saw some incredible bands at BDO - White Stripes, Beasties, Franz Ferdinand, Polyphonic Spree, the Hives, Evermore, Eskimo Joe, Sleater-Kinney, the Gratesโ€ฆgood times.

whatisthislifeilead@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

The Grates! I once met the leader singer (Patience?) at Ding Dong Lounge in the toilet. I was drunkedly looking for something on the ground and she came up to me and was like "I don't know what it is you are looking for but I really hope you find it one day..." That has always stuck with me.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (6 replies)

Strangely, you listed two of the best concerts I've been to. Which year did you see Young?

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (5 replies)

It was the Greendale tour which was 2003 I think. Second set started with an epic intro to Like A Hurricane...I remember seeing a keyboard being lowered from the roof for a perfectly timed solo.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (4 replies)

I saw that tour back in Toronto. Absolutely amazing. Did he do the whole stage show behind him during Greendale out here too?

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Yeah. First set was Greendale, and very amateur theatre night! It was great. Second set was 2ยฝ hours of back catalogue.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

I think he started the 2nd set with Rockin in the Free world and the entire arena went absolutely off. Good change of pace from an album that probably no one listened to.

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Almost home town show in Toronto would have been epic

Taleya@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (1 reply)

wandering through Myer to find the ticket outlet tucked away in one weird corner at the back....

omoikiri@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

I remember lining up at Eastland in the very early hours of the morning for tickets to Green Day. The Ticketek counter was on the top floor of Myer. You had to go to the weird 3rd floor mezzanine and wait for Myer to open that one particular door and then rush up 2 or 3 escalators to get to the top floor. It was madness.

Silviecat44@vlemmy.net · 1 pts · 3y

My sister got into those tickets but it timed out early so she wasnโ€™t able to buy them in time! So close but missed out!

underwatermagpies@aussie.zone · 14 pts · 3y

You might think you've had struggles in your life. And I'm sure you have. But they're nothing compared to the agonies of a spoilt cat who only gets fed three times a day and isn't getting attention right at this minute.

What was the problem hard or loose?

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Extreme loose. Every minute of erry day.

Best decision I've ever made though was bringing 3 rolls of glorious king size 3 ply away on that trip.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

All hail the 3 ply.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 3y

PeelerSheila you have inspired me tonight. I was tempted to skip my planned workout and do a quick dodgy dinner, but thought to myself "if PeelerSheila can peel 80kg of potatoes, and manage to keep to an exercise routine, I can manage one dinner and a few sets of weights". And I did, healthy dinner made & heavy things lifted repeatedly. ๐Ÿ’ช

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 3y (40 replies)

Let's talk about cutlery. I have my favourites. Some of them were lost during the Great Lockdown. Some have gone AWOL in the abyss which is the teenager's bedroom. Some come staggering home wary from whatever horrors they've been a part of. Always to a warm welcome and a very hot bath.

I got told "You're weird. Nobody counts their knives and forks". I said "You're wrong because Nana does".

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 3y (2 replies)

My favourite bit of cutlery are a set of japanese steak knives. They have a classy wooden handle and the blades are crisp 25 yrs on. Proper stainless steel. Zero rust. Precision engineering.

goat@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 3y

take a picture!

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

They sound absolutely divine. A good steak knife is a friend for life.

Sets of thai bronze and ebony cutlery , some are bamboo style, some have an embossed temple goddess, some elephants, they are so nice to use I should use them more

for everyday I just use an italian stainless steel set .

I have a fave old german kitchen knife , hideously expensive, double edged so it cuts straight down , young seagoon broke the tip ( he busted a whole heap of stuff while he was here ๐Ÿค” )

landsharkkidd@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

I have a Spork I love and this like small knife with flowers on it. We used to have two sporks but now we have one. If I lose the knife I don't think I can live on...

(I joke but that knife is my fave).

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (10 replies)

I think forks are overrated. Most of the time I'd rather have a spoon

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (4 replies)

You've gotta use the right tool for the job. Spaghetti comes to mind.

Force_majeure122@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Yeh but spaghetti is like the only thing you need a fork for

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

You maybe correct. If I cut food up before hand like you do for a toddler we could all use spoons. Saves on washing up. ๐Ÿ’ก

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I use fork to eat cake. And always get given spoon. Fork for cake! (For me personally)

Cutlery were another thing I decided I'd replace when I moved. Woolies had a set and they are just fine. My son bought me a Victonox chopping knife for xmas one year though, which is awesome. Still sits in its plastic cover.

RosaliePreistley@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 3y

Wow, I think I've finally established some kind of regular routine to life. What a fucking year it's been. Looking forward to enjoying the regularness of a new life I worked pretty hard to set up, sober and female. My adhd seems to have settled down a lot now I've cut back on caffiene, no booze and better levels of oestrogen in my bloodstream.

I do aa, play with my cats, make food, do a little exercise and waste time on the internet. I need to start looking for work, but I have very few usable skills which don't pertain the the music industry. My sister's eap extends to immediate family and they do career counselling so I'm calling them on Monday. Jobs victoria also, and then try and get another look into doing one of these carer trainesships. I don't want to have to become a cleaner or dishpig so someone who can identify my strengths would be excellent.

At least I've been active work wise while I've been on leave with all the volunteering. Meh, 15 years of two nights a week for a good wage and now I'll be back to full time to get close to that again. I don't think it will be a bad thing though, all that free time just led me to substance abuse time and again. Being trans has been such a great opportunity for complete re-invention and enabled me to look after and love myself properly for the first time in my life, so I'm gonna be ok. thx for reading, and thanks everyone for following my journey both here and before on reddit. I've felt such wonderful things and made a couple of new friends from the people who've replied and engaged. It even seems like my downvoters have disappeared.

jaybb3rw0cky@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 3y

My anxiety is stabbing me with a rough stick straight up the rectum lately. I hit up some CBD oil in the hopes it'll calm my heart down. I really hate this feeling though - trying to grab thoughts is like trying to catch a particular drop of water in a raging river.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 3y (3 replies)

I didn't feel the quake. But I just want to chuck a hissy fit about it being two years in a row that EOFY has coincided with pay day (or the day after). Pay was supposed to be yesterday, I still haven't been paid and this has been my skintest fortnight. Grrrr. I know they've processed payroll but are the banks/accounting systems that overloaded that payments could be delayed this much?

E: oh well, I have enough to get me a coffee and pie when I get to Up North.

WeatherproofMonkey@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

You would think payroll could have scheduled the payment a day earlier so it arrives in peopleโ€™s account on time?! Itโ€™s not like they need to manually process everyoneโ€™s payโ€ฆ hope it gets to you today !!

I donโ€™t think I would ever feel an earthquake at that scale unless it happens when Iโ€™m awake๐Ÿ˜ณ

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Honestly the way this place is run I sometimes wonder if payroll IS manually run. Admin has been an absolute shambles. I'm down to $30 and can't really keep raiding my rent account, I mean I have my savings so I certainly won't be out on the streets but this is very, very frustrating. Deep breath...

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

I didn't feel it either but I woke up at that time for no reason feeling ultra tired shakes fist at earthquake

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (2 replies)

Exactly what is supposed to happen with reddit?

Baku@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Nothing to Reddit itself. But on the 1st (yank time, so probably late on the 1st or potentially early on the 2nd) that's when the API changes everyone's here because of are implemented. All the apps don't want to pay will cease working

Goddess_Amaterasu@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y

Right thanks

jaybb3rw0cky@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

It's going to be interesting - the protests put a dent into their operations, and while the mark is still visible it's been buffed out to the best of Reddit's ability. But losing the preferred apps... it's going to be telling whether the usual pessimistic Reddit rhetoric was smoke or if there was fire beneath it this whole time.

New to me movie for today was The Heartbreak Kid. yeah I know it's old but I hadn't seen it.

Well, that movie would have a different ending if it were made this year. I would at minimum expect an inquiry, at most jail. I suppose it hinges on if the kid can give consent.

I really have trouble seeing this as a coming of age or young woman breaks free story.

I also watched Tar with Cate Blanchett. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ It's a horror story and a morality tale. When you break ethical rules in a heartless thoughtless way and hurt feelings ( tho the rule breaking seems like harmless teenage drama ) you risk attracting really bad people and incurring serious consequences

For the past couple of weeks I've been in contact with someone at the company my computer chair is from. And last week I had an issue where I couldn't remove the chair legs from the piston and two weeks later I finally got the chair legs sent and I got sent 5 chair legs...

I'm not mad about it but I'm just confused AF.

Edit: I HAVE A SEAT! I had to use olive oil to get the wheels off of the old legs but I finally have a seat! Now I don't have to use a dining chair.

Editยฒ: Yep, just got an email back from the person I've been communicating with, the 5 legs was indeed an accident. Oh well. If anyone breaks their Anda Seat legs, and you need one in a pinch, then I'm your person.

Finally got around to calling my bank to lower the interest on my mortgage account - is 6.1% good for a variable homeloan? I'm guessing not and that's still probably best to go back to the broker and find out what else is out there.

tone_212@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 3y (4 replies)

I re-financed recently - currently on 5.69%. If your current bank won't budge, shop around.

Is that variable? I'm going to have to do this soon. Any perks for moving to the new lender?

tone_212@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y

Yep that's variable. Switched last month, already recieved a couple "we're increasing your interest rate" letters. Still sounds like my rate is good. I'd move if your bank won't give you a competitive rate, money savings to be had.

You may also find some of your guests (Mr Mortgage, Miss Credit Cards and Mrs Car Loan) have dibs on most of your future ducks as well.

Sorry time:
When I was a kid I went to a yum-cha restaurant with my dad and grandparents. I had some chicken feet, and they were delicious! My sweet grandma noticed this. The next time she came over to our house, she brought a pack of Coles chicken feet, uncooked, just in their original plastic packaging. She put them in the microwave and served them to me as is, no seasoning, nothing. It broke my heart a little bit but I couldn't bring myself to eat them.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

Oh dear. That would be awful. I'm surprised you didn't end up unable to eat anything microwaved after a trauma like that! Just think, you may never have discovered the joy of microwaved potatoes and the whole world could have ended up a much duller place. All because of one misunderstanding over chicken feet.

EOFY and it's that time of the year again where I think "oooh, what presents can I buy myself" only to be disappointed when I get next to nothing back anyway. But I really want one of these (I have an older model but the idea of detachable controllers like the Switch has me salivating) but can only justify the purchase if I get something decent back from the tax man.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 3y (6 replies)

I put money in to Super which I will claim as a tax deduction. So I will get a decent tax return, which I will put in to Super. And so get another tax return from it next year! The gift that keeps on giving.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Do you put your entire tax return into super? I'm starting to think I should boost my super now that I'll be staying in Australia for a while, and I've got years to catch up on.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 3y (2 replies)

I'm actually putting in more on a regular basis - I'm trying to max out the amount I can put in, including using up the unused amounts from past years. My income varies so I have a budget where the main expenses come out of the base pay, and everything that I earn above that is divided up on percentages, including extras like tax returns, interest payments and money from selling things on Marketplace. About half of that is going into Super, the rest is going to other savings goals.

It's definitely worth adding more to Super because of the tax benefits, and the sooner you do it the greater those benefits are. Not just the lower tax when you pay in, but the interest you earn in Super is also taxed at a lower rate, so the compounding effects of that make a huge difference on your eventual returns.

PeelerSheila@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

You actually explained that really well. I find it hard to get my head around the details of that kind of thing and the language of finance is not my second language.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y

Thanks for explaining! I think I might start doing some of that rather than socking it all into a savings account. Even 10% is better than nothing.

jaybb3rw0cky@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

This is a good idea... part of me thinks that I want to enjoy things now (the pessimistic part that believes I'll never really access my super like the Boomers have/do), but I should also be sensible. Maybe I'll split the $3.50 that I'll get back haha.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 3y

That pessimism tends to become a self-fulfilling prophecy. It causes you to not put anything aside, putting you into the position where you really won't have much to access.

Depending on how long you have until you retire the things you give up now will be returned many times over - and 60 creeps up on you quicker than you expected. Definitely don't give up everything that makes you happy now, but look for a balance. If there a few things that are not that important to you now that you can skip the benefits in future will be worthwhile.

Just listening to Weezer Africa, tho the original is awesome too, reminded me how one of my aims/wishes is to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro . The easy climb, not the hard one. I've been dreaming of that place since I was a kid reading adventure books and watching Kimba. Suppose I better lose weight and get fit, eh. And yes, I'll be a senior climber but I'm no stranger to walking, I walk a lot every week. Mr Seagoon , I'll have to drag him along. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Just got home after the (painful) Storm game and I am shocked by how few people are down at the Firelight Festival. Was expecting to look out from my balcony and see swarms of people but there just isn't that many down there.
