What was a good rate if I may ask? I can talk from 2017 on. Rates in my town are awful (normally, the commission is a 20% either through a fee or through a lower rate that, in the end charges you indirectly), and I know that in other touristic cities, rates are the same or worse.
The ATM's are not the best, but even with their fees, the rate is way better than the windows. Still, the best is to pay directly with card, you won't get a better rate than that.

Check grapheneos, after locking, they clear the data from memory. Also, after locking, a timer starts, if I don't unlock my phone before the timer runs out, it auto reboots. Now, I don't live in a country where I need to be worried about being searched, but you can bet if I were in the US, that timer would be no longer than 1 hour. Hell, maybe would set it to 10 minutes, just to be sure.
What we actually need is for european companxes to drop the safety checks dependant on google play services and start using the phone checks only so alternative roms can function properly without depending on google.
It can be done and would allow people to more freely develop and adopt alternatives like grapheneos without hassle.

I use my finger to unlook the phone, but after 5 attempts, it will always ask for my password. So if I am going to be searched, I can conveniently use the wrong finger 5 times and lock it with password. It won't revert to fingerprint unlocking until I entered the password once.
After that, I have a duress password that will erase everything on the phone except the OS.
If you are at risk in the US, consider getting a refurbished pixel and install grapheneOS. You'll sleep better.
