The energy intensive part is in creating the dry mix. Mostly in creating the lime.

Edit: Here's the breakdown for anyone interested.

Mostly translation. Specifically:

  • Checking homework between sessions with a (human) foreign language tutor. At his suggestion. Let's him focus his time on the more interesting, less repetitive parts of teaching, and me get more out of our sessions. Sometimes it gets it wrong, but when that isn't obvious my search for the right answer usually teaches me something anyway about the grammatical structure or words it chose.
  • Translating e-mails and other written communications that I've tried but are beyond my vocabulary to manage yet. I write it by hand, ask it to translate, and then check every word. I slap my forehead a few times for words I actually_did_ know and just forgot, and look up anything it uses that I don't know. Because of the way I picked up most of my vocabulary, I don't always know the most common and natural sounding way to phrase things. I search unfamiliar phrases or idioms online to get a feel for context of use and level of formality, and rewrite anything it got wrong or had the wrong tone.

Outside of translation, when I'm trying to figure out where to buy something obscure that I don't know the name of and can't find it after repeated searching, asking a local LLM sometimes gives me the name of a vendor or two whose web site leads me to the right search term.

Similarly (and ironically), when I'm looking for information in how to do something oddly specific but can't find information online due to the proliferation of vaguely related AI slop pages on closely related topics, sometimes throwing the question at the LLM leads me to the right phrase to search and find what I'm looking for.

Critically, I never trust the answer from the next-word-prediction-machine (which is essentially what an LLM is) gives me. All my current uses for it revolve around its original purpose - finding the right words.

Yes, actually! Uneven heat is the culprit. See my reply above about cast iron failure on induction. Very thin carbon steel pans can warp for similar reasons, and I would assume the same for large, empty aluminum pans on very high heat (though I haven't seen that reported. The solution in both cases is to start on a lower setting and raise the temperature gradually.

The warping may be why thin, round-bottomed carbon steel woks are easy to find but the same doesn't seem to be true of flat-bottomed frying pans.

I keep hearing this, and had the pleasure of using someone else's large, lightweight carbon steel pan for a while - it was a dream! Then I went to buy one, and all the new ones I can find are shockingly thick and heavy by comparison. I love my carbon steel wok, but just can't seem to find frying pans anywhere near as thin and light.

Any suggestions? Preferably in Europe. Stretch goal: welded rather than riveted handle. I have family members who aren't comfortable with my level of clean-up, and crust at the edge of the rivets seems to be a sore point.

Cast iron is great for induction IF you know how to use them together. To avoid cracking your pan, start the stove on a lower setting, let the pan heat, then raise higher if you need it.

The issue is thermal expansion. Induction cooktops can heat the pan faster than gas or thermoelectric, but only where the coil is (no heat passing up the outside of the sides). Cast iron conducts this heat relatively slowly, so the bottom of the pan heats and expands slightly while the sides (or parts of the bottom not directly over the coil) take longer to do the same. The thickness of most cast iron can exacerbate the issue, as even the top surface is expanding more slowly than the bottom near the coil.

Cast iron is harder (more rigid) and also more brittle than carbon or stainless steel, so this can lead to microfractures that grow larger over repeated cycles.

As long as you know to raise the heat slowly, they're a great combination. Hard learned lesson for me though - lost an antique 15" that was my main daily driver

Oh honey - I'm so sorry. That explains why she looks so young in all the pictures - it's because she was.

We lost both of ours and both dogs over the course of about a year and a half. They were every one of them old, and it was still absolutely crushing every time. To lose one so young, and to such a trauma indoors where we assume they're going to be safe - the heartbreak and shock together must be absolutely heartbreaking.
