To be fair, Google has lost a lot of business to ChatGPT & friends who are not offering a list of actual content associated with the search at all. Hate Google as much as you want and I'm sure most of it is warranted, but they're not completely evil in this case
I want to let people deal with the consequences of their stupidity on their own.
Those consequences affect a much much wider range of people, not just those who are stupid about it so it's not about protecting them, it is about protecting everyone including the ones who can't protect themselves.

If the current solutions were used for mass surveillance, then they would be used to classify your actions in some predefined way and whomever is using them will use this classification in some (possibly nefarious) unknown way
I think there's an important semantic difference between worse performance and correctness. Tools, like AI, can underperform when compared to humans and still be very useful and worth investing into, but that's only as long as they perform correctly.

It already exists, lots of institutions people work with know way more than just their age. They could really provide an anonymous way of validating someone's age without divulging their identity. This can also be done in such a way that the verification provider doesn't know the requester either so they don't have a way of tracking user habits
This isn't surprising, 20% of the world's supply of literally anything would have profound impacts with how tightly coupled the world supply chain is. When that resource is a basic need such as petrol, things tend to become dramatic quite quicly

They don't support the police as the institution it is meant to be (an institution working with the community and within the community to help to keep it safe), they just admire the aggression it is capable of.
