So... while congress is attacking the hell out of a guy, because they think he might have known something about the possibility of people slightly modifying a disease in china... and not wanting to put it as the primary way the disease spread. Meanwhile we're doing something 100x worse, on systems that the owners claim to have multiple cases of it accidentally reaching out and launching attacks on other companies undirected. I don't see the problem here.
Honestly though I feel like a federated linked in has the same problem as a federated dating site..., or really even federated facebook style social media etc...
Federation can work for something like lemmy, in that we can be useful in spite of a lack of userbase compared to the corporate version. 200 people scattered around the world to talk about linux, or open source works.
Trying to find someone close enough to you to date, or looking for a specialized employee or a close enough to work on site employee on the other hand, is a hell of a stretch.
I think that's kind of the problem in general, the real issue is, the firewalls and controls. It's not about believing the western propoganda, but simply the lack of non-propoganda sources. IE how can you find out if finland's policies are better than america's.

For me the main point is, syncronization. Point is I want to read on my phone, or if i go to another computer catch up on it. If I set up a seperate RSS reader on each, then I'd have to figure out what's read and what's not. Honestly that's a feature that google reader really had me spoiled in, I loved being able to use a work computer, browse through my rss feeds, star articles that I thought I may want to come back to, go home look at the starred ones and then go back.
Then google reader shut down, and I wanted to be able to do the same again, while also not being vulnerable to another shut down.
I think we are about hitting the AI pocolypse now. Just like when most the free video sites started imploding or getting swarmed with ads. The "give it away free and super well, while hemoraging money". step is starting to run out... investors are tired of pouring money into the black hole, and telling these companies "figure out how to opperate in the green or give up", and the fact is this ponzi scheme is about to run out.

Linux is not an OS. It's a kernel. Long story short, technically "Linux" has no graphic interface, cannot even run commands without a shell attached etc...
Obviously when most people say "linux", they mean a linux distribution, which is the linux kernel, with a bunch of software bundled and installed on top of it when you install. WINE is no different than "x" or "wayland". which are by definition, software running on a linux kernel, that is necessary to run a program designed to be graphical.
The point is everything run on "linux" is actually run on top of layers built on top of linux. So say we're talking running the text editor feather pad.
so linux "native" looks like
Linux Kernel -> display server (x/wayland) -> libraries -> featherpad,
while running something with wine looks like
Linux Kernel -> Display server -> Libraries for wine -> Wine - Notepad.
so bottom line is it's right, it was actually a minor peak in 1970, dropping to 1975, going up to 1980... balooned like crazy in the 2005 housing bubble, and is currently sitting way above that.

I agree there, I don't think it's impossible or even difficult to make the movie that hits the same themes the same way, there's absolutely zero thought in my head that it's not possible to make something purely with American culture, systems, housing and foods that conveys 100% of the same message, in some ways possibly even better
However, there is a very high chance that somewhere in the production line decisions are made by someone who either determines that the things that made the movie popular, aren't compatible with American audiences, and will intentionally dumb them down or change the actual themes.

To date, what has consistently always happened over time is that as our productive capacity increases, someone finds some way to create a higher standard of living using that productive capacity. That higher standard of living has always been more-appealing than the leisure time.
The frustrating part is what the upper class misses, They describe it as the "standard of living" going up... They are talking as if getting a house is the same as always, but we all want netflix and video games now so we are struggling to keep up. When the obvious situation to anyone not at the top is, what used to be expensive luxuries are getting cheaper, new luxuries are being added, but essentials are ballooning out of control.
If we had the choice to live like the 80s, where we could casually afford a home for a family with a single income etc... but facebook were more expensive... their analogies would make sense. but the reality is, we're all forced into the work large hours, not because we want more luxuries, but because the basic human needs for food, water and shelter are where the requirements are going up.

Again I didn't get the policy, but quite simply that possibility gave me something to push forward for a couple of years, after which a whole lot changed, my mental attitude improved massively, I got a much better girlfriend, I got a house, my son moved in with me. I would say even the possible thought of the life insurance, probably helped give me a "well I only need to push through long enough to get the insurance and run out the clock".

IE case: report against person X claiming abuse of child
A. Investigate: Great, but how intrusive to go.. Like in this case they took the twins away long enough that they could at least try to get the story. Probably would be better to drop in and see how the family is, but actual abusers could certainly keep the act and story straight for a few minutes/hours, and return right to it when the door is closed.
B. Take the kids out long enough to sort it out, good if there's an abuser, but again horrific if there isn't.
C. Punish the hell out of false flaggers. also good, but again comes down to the bigger problem of abusers that can cover it up. We all agree that there should be a harsh as hell penalty for people who knowingly file a false claim. But then comes "mistaken claims" and even "true claims that lack evidence". When actual abusers can hide their abuse long enough to get through an investigation, and wreck the lives of the person who reported them, it creates the chilling effect of scaring legtimate accusers into silence.
I've been on the wrong end of DSS before, I know many people who have been on the wrong end of DSS over false calls, family disputes etc... Honestly this is so far from supprising to me, except the fact that in this case the victim is a high profile politician. The poor half of America has always known of this danger.
