I agree re: Mastodon. It does allow you to follow people, which Lemmy lacks. But I've made deeper* connections here then there.

*still quite shallow, but I know a bit of their personal life, while in mastodon, not.

I think getting to know people requires unstructured chat and some sense of privacy (or at least not metaphorically shouting from the rooftops).

Melting pot? I wouldn't call it that. More like a 70s jell-o salad: all the ingredients are visible, but separate. There's alarmingly little miscegenation in the US. Go anywhere in Latin America and you can see true melting pots.

Just like DS9 takes 3 seasons to find its footing, B5 takes almost the whole first season. But then the rewards are so, so good...
