Sex was avoided as a topic, but we were taught that premarital sex is a sin. I was also teased as a kid about having crushes on girls (I'm male), despite my adament (and truthful) denials, and othertimes they'd joke that I'd change my mind once I was older. I won that though - turns out I was gay and never did change my mind.
As for LGBT issues, it was so taboo / not talked about that I didn't even connect my confusing feelings for male classmates with me being gay until I was 18. I thought everyone felt like that and was frustrated when they wouldn't reciprocate those emotions back.
Afaik US Social Security running out of money is kind of an illusion as all the money is "invested" with the US government anyway, which is to say that the money is already coming out of the same pot of as all their other spending. It's not as if once that account hits $0 that to maintain benefits they'd have to ramp up their spending - rather once it hits $0 they'll be cutting spending, and to maintain benefits would require them to spend what were before it hit $0.
It's kind of akin to their "debt limit" - it's just an artificially constructed barrier to their spending they impose on themseves but can tweak whenever they want. This isn't to say that real barriers won't appear - for instance maybe the bond market is expecting them to cut spending once it hits $0 and will react poorly if they don't.
I think OP is asking "In the worst case scenario of a malicious instance owner that is able to fork the Lemmy codebase (so could disable hashing) and intercept and record all communications going to and from their instance, what risk do I have as a user of that instance?"
The answer of course is yes, in theory a malicious instance owner could see the password you use and can see all your communications, votes, what you look at, etc. So use a unique password for that instance, and don't use the instance for private communucations whose interception could seriously harm you.
My weird proposal is that I think the western provinces should be permament daylight savings, while the eastern provinces should be permentantly standard time. The impact would be to narrow the time difference between east and west by 1 hour, which should allow for more options in the job market.
For instance, a company based in Toronto may not be willing to start an office in Vancouver if there's only 5 hours of overlap per work day, but may be if there's 6 hours of overlap. Ditto for remote workers.

From my perspective, if someone advertises that they did <nice thing> then it's just ad spend. Give them kudos for spending a portion of their marketing budget on charity rather than just commercials, but it is still marketing. This can apply to individuals building up their social reputation too.

Switching to something rolling release makes sense. My Arch setup (btw) has always felt much more stable than when I was using Ubuntu, because with Ubuntu I'd inevitatebly run into a bug, find out it was fixed months ago but won't be backported, and then either live with it or try custom-installing the newer version of that thing. Or I'd install something manually that expected dependency X be the latest version, etc.
My friend is an indie game developer and he once told me the typical refund rate, which I think was only a little lower than this. I don't think the game length is playing that large a role here, rather people use that refund policy as a way to try out a game (like a demo). Probably most of the people who refunded wouldn't have bought it in the first place without that refund policy, so he shouldn't really view this as "because of this policy I lost 55K sales".
When I make pizza later this week I'm going to try this out. TBH it looks tasty.
Edit: I tried it out, making my normal pizza with just the addition of strawberries (slightly spicy tomato sauce, spinach, vegan cheese, vegan sausage). It's okay but underwhelming. I think strawberries might be too subtle. It wasn't bad, but I'd rather just eat the strawberries on their own.
Which is precisely the problem; there's really no way to opt out of the UK's law. Your only options are to either comply or defy them. They leave no middle ground.
Blocking the UK isn't enough to get them off your back. They'll claim that if your website is still accessible via VPN to someone in the UK then you're still subject to their laws.

Since there isn't really room for interest rates to drop anymore people shouldn't expect home prices to rise faster than incomes rise, but it's going to be hard to undo 30 years of observation.
+1. In my personal life things are much better and improved, but in terms of world stability, health of politics (at least where I live), the observed impacts of climate change, etc. pre-2016 was so much better on average.
