Neither am I, but it looks like it costs money and takes a lot of time. It might be right for you, but here's something you can do starting today: learn to fire up Virtual Machines and network them together. When I first started using virtual machines getting networks to and between them connected was a chore, but I could tell you everything about them. The last time I tried was with Virtual Machine Manager on Rocky, and it was networked out of the box. I should look into why that "just worked."

To add to your confusion:

Developers can throw up a subdivision in a few months that holds well more than 100 people, so the mechanism to fix the water system was always there, there just wasn't a tax base to pay for it, and apparently no will to take corrective action to fix the systemic issues.

The concern about collecting rain water in Colorado is that if enough people did it there'd be nothing to flow downhill to feed all the towns with drinking water and power from dams. This, of course, happened all on its own anyway.

There're a whole bunch of things going on here not the least of which is that if all the dice roll the wrong way, the stars go exactly wrong, the law created a circumstance where you're legally expected to stand outside in a rainstorm with a cup in hand and die of dehydration. That's my weak understanding of it.

Python, and you kind of want to take the long way around.

Get it up and running in its own virtual environment. On Linux and Windows this'll just be a directory its in, and once you've activated that install via a terminal command everything stays self contained. It has a package manager called "pip" that will handle package and dependency management. Use pip to install spyder, pandas, matplotlib, numpy, scipy, and openpyxl. If you install anaconda this is what it's doing under the hood, but there are licensing hiccups with using their package repos.

Anyway, however you get up and going, numpy is fast numerical storage, scipy is a lot of scientific algorithms, pandas is a data analysis library that rides on top of numpy, and openpyxl is an interface to excel files from python. Pandas will get you one line CSV file reads and writes and more complex manipulation of Excel spreadsheets. Openpyxl gets you cell by cell manipulation of a spreadsheet. Spyder is a development environment.

It can do much, much more.

I asked an LLM for a small python example with pandas and matplotlib. Load it into spyder and run it and see what happens (tip, go into the settings/preferences, IPython Console, Plotting, and change the Graphics Backend to "Qt" to get the plots in their own window). ::: spoiler Python Example

You can customize gnome pretty far. The code to have normal human minimize/maximize/close buttons is all still there, and the window bar is there as well. You just have to know which programs to pull from dnf that know what registry dconf settings to adjust. I have yet to find a use case for nautilus between Dolphin (KDE) and using a terminal.

In the comments you said you get tests run every 4-6 weeks. In my experience old age problems don't start at 32.

Try some different things in between one of those 4-6 week cycles:

  • Track your diet with whatever website or software looking for basic stuff like calories and all the little sodium/calcium/potassium type stuff.
  • Drop caffeine entirely. Taper off because the withdrawal headaches suck, and it'll take pretty much the whole month. I doubt this will help, but the best sleep I ever had was when I quit caffeine.
  • If money isn't a problem grab a blood sugar monitoring kit and spot check it depending on how quickly you want to burn through the consumables. Get advice from people who have to do this on how to do it right.

Is it like a brain fog? One that no amount of water seems to touch? Like you're moving and thinking through a soup that gets thinner and thinner through the day until it finally gets thin enough to seem normal?

They won't know that much. They don't understand that their job isn't running a water department, it's running the computers that maintain the water department and that includes security. For someone familiar with computer security it's easy to recognize negligence, but until the law sees it as criminal negligence nothing's going to change.

Small town municipal water departments aren't going to be able to afford the guy holding the shield against international state actors.

OK, I'm curious first about the data requirements.

If people are posting just to stir up shit then that would be something that would have to be handled at the community level or at the individual level. If we don't agree with someone's opinion then just ignore that person. If people are coming around trying to stir up violence that's a different story. The bar is lower than ever for firing up a lemmy instance if people are into that kind of thing.

I'm sure there are a bunch of people who are a lot more knowledgeable about it, but it might be as simple firing up your own instances and just federating. By not allowing people to post you'd just be in readonly mode and would get passed all the posts, maybe. With every other kind of archive process like this the images/videos/audio are the long pole. A full 100% backup of "what did everyone see back then" is out of reach; even youtube (or especially youtube) goes back and edits old videos for newer compression or a change in copyright rules.

My only real thought on it right now is an annual back up is waaaaaay too slow. I'd want to see more about what the ActivityPub stream looks like. I'd want to hear from an owner of an instance about how quickly their storage requirements go, and I'm now curious about whether there's any evidence of anyone else such as Three Letter Agencies already backing it all up.

They do A/B testing where they put one feature in front of some folks and a different feature in front of others so they can gather data about what people will and won't tolerate. Between that and the massive tracking they do with IP addresses for people going around account bans, and there's no real way to know if they were targeting you through cookies/IP, or if you just fell into different groups.

I don't think they put a lot of thought into what'll that do for some of the subreddits that are for desperate people looking for advice since two people back to back won't get the same advice. There's no way to swap notes, no reddit-of-record, and now all that good advice (and some of it was good) is locked away. It warms my cold dead heart to see their stock tank because they don't deserve the best of their users.

It makes more sense when you consider that the point is to get rid of the psychological blocks that would keep you from being able to do your business as quickly as possible whereever possible under whatever circumstances. That three to a urinal thing is under a short time limit.
