It feels like Pandora’s box has been opened. I don’t think it’s all smoke & mirrors. It will not impact all industries equally. It won’t fix humans being poorly intended or malicious actors seeking power & wealth. In many ways, they benefit the most (giving capital more access to creativity). It’s built on the largest scale theft of public good for profit. To me, that’s wrong, and the people/masses should be getting financial returns, collectively & universally, in exchange for what was stolen.
I completely agree and this I believe is the most important conclusion that can come out of these AI debates. You can not stop AI from existing now that it has been implemented so widely and there are open source/weight models out etc, this technology is going to survive even if the big companies that started it die off.
The big contradiction of our times is yet again, the private ownership of the means of production. Within capitalism, AI can never be a positive thing since at best it's going to eradicate so many working positions and at worst it can further destroy our planet etc. At the same time, there is nothing you can do to stop it from existing. The only thing that can truly solve the contradiction is socialism, restructuring society in a way that people don't have to struggle against each other for a job position just because capitalists want to pay the minimum amount on wages, and production will not be done for profit but simply for making life better for everyone. And if there truly is nothing useful left to be done from humans, then they can freely be artists, scientists, athletes or whatever without the system letting them starve for not being a machine cog.
If anyone still believes in the fairy tale of free speech under capitalism, here is yet another example of why that's bullshit. Capitalists own everything, they get to set the rules since it's their private property, and the artists that made it big by being spineless will collaborate with them on closing the mouth of any real artist in their tour because the capitalists have a metric fuckton of money that they will lose out on if they don't.
The most consistent ones for me are cat trees, cardboard box scratching pad, an elastic ball that they both love to chase around (one of the two cats also fetches and brings it back like a dog), cat tunnels, and an elastic carrot thing with catnip in it that they love to attack
Also hiding some of the old toys they don't care about and then bringing them back once they have kinda forgotten about their existence can spark up their excitement sometimes
I like Linthra which is FOSS and works either with local files or self hosted servers like Jellyfin. I haven't tried hosting Jellyfin yet so I haven't tested that, but I really like it's interface for local files
They've stopped pretending that all of this is to protect Ukranians for so long now, your son will become minced meat and your daughter sold off to predators so that daddy USA can continue its proxy war against Russia and the war industry can keep on pumping out expensive weapons and ammunition
These AI companies really managed to make a whole generation of lead brain boomers to fully believe that AGI is real and we will have Terminator in a couple of years, their marketing teams deserve a raise
The thing with that is, it won't be implemented in a capitalist system where companies will collect most of the data they can so they can sell it to ad companies, business partners and government intelligence who are all willing to pay big bucks for it.
The reason it doesn't happen is not that there was no engineering architecture design to prevent it, but because no company is going to willingly break the iron law of "profits above all else" that capitalism requires.
The antithesis to all this is free open source alternatives, like Lemmy itself for instance, that don't collect more data than they need for the simple reason that they are not built with the goal of profit in mind.
So if we want a better web experience in the near future, the best thing you can do is convince people to use FOSS alternatives and create communities here instead of the giants like Reddit, Instagram etc.
Just generally having to do all of the office culture stuff when my type of work (programming) is much better done remotely. Having to wake up much earlier than needed to commute all the way to the office dressed up according to their policy, showing up on time and having to be stuck there the whole day even at the times of the day where there's not much work to be done, having to deal with certain coworkers that I'd rather avoid, having managers spending more time trying to pressure you than doing any actual work etc.
Work would be so much better if I could just deal with the problems being solved rather than the corporate rituals we all have to take part in.
