I tried XMPP and Matrix a few days ago. The XMPP experience is SO MUCH BETTER. HOLLY FUCK.
Matrix is so laggy and clunky and slow and annoying. XMPP was just perfect. And the "Conversations" client, for XMPP, is so fucking fast. It is missing a few things, such as swipe to quote/reply to a given message, but damn, is it fast.
The pieces of shit, pedophiles, pedophiles protectors, climate worseners, enemies of the planet and enemies of humanity are scared. I hope they all die a gruesome death. Oh, I am so fucking angry nowadays.
Yes, this is what happened. All my comments with the "join-lemmy.org" link had only 1 view and 1 upvote (mine). This was happening in several of my accounts (each account for a different device). I found that weird, so I checked the comments from a different account and surely enough, they were removed.
But then your buddies will want to join some other server, hosted by someone else, and so they will have to create yet another account. And have yet another client running?
Your XMPP is also down. I just came across this by luck. Maybe adding your alternative username (kris@feddit.org) to your main povoq@slrpnk.net about is not a bad idea. That would help people find your posts when an outage is happening.

This is a really good question, and I suppose the answer is the same as to why Mastodon is not more popular.
I think it is a combination of several factors:
Not many people know about it. Really, reddit is one of the most well known websites on the internet. Very few people know lemmy/mastodon.
UI/UX issues. The more friction there is, the smaller the probability of someone using something. And Lemmy has TONS of friction. And the lemmy devs are not welcome to suggestions. Seriously, every suggestion that is made is probably answered with "I am against this". If the idea did not come from their heads, they are probably against it. This has been my experience with them, at least.
Lack of content. On reddit, there is tons of content. On lemmy, not so much. And people are generally not very principled. They want to consume, and completely ignore the ethics/morality of whatever it is they are doing.
I think this is not necessarily bad though. Lemmy DOES need more content and more users. But I hope it never becomes the size of reddit. Because reddit fucking sucks. People are stupid as fuck there now. The amount of low effort and low information content on reddit is astonishing.
Hopefully, Lemmy gets the smart, principled, interesting people and reddit keeps the influencers and onlyfaners.
