Well yeah… AI research started out in the Soviet Union precisely as an investigation of intelligence and consciousness. The goal was never to replace workers (as you know, the USSR was socialist). It was a scientific investigation of our own minds. The idea was that by learning how to build an artificial mind, every step would help us learn about our own “natural” minds.

It’s not random that some of the best existential works of sci-fi ever came from the USSR 😂

  1. “Good” ones are rare.
  2. They are pretty.

Humans just love pretty things. It’s famously one the main things that moves people.

Like others my favorites change a lot, but having just rewatched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood… Dude what an awesome show. Always cry at least 5 times watching it. For sure deserving of a fixed spot on any top 10s.

And one I haven’t seen anyone mention: Andor. The best Star Wars anything ever.

Of course. But I don’t think that’s the “purpose” of it. It’s good to remember that languages don’t have anything purposeful about them at all. Any characteristic in a language has use, but no purpose.

Like living beings languages evolve, and mutate, and useful traits stay behind and spread and less useful ones are forgotten.

Gender might sometimes be useful in those situations, but I would be skeptical it’s the main reason it appeared and kept being used.

That only works if they have different genders. Which is often not the case in most gendered languages.

“Bob sacó su manzana de la caja y la dejó caer.”

Bob took his female apple out of his female box and let it (female) fall

Also from my experience growing and going to school in a gender language (not Spanish btw), grammar classes are way more intense and thorough than for something like English. Most people don’t really have grammar classes in English speaking countries, while I studied it until the last year of high school…

More complex grammar certainly makes it more difficult to learn, even for native speakers.

What’s convenient about it? I genuinely see no benefits, as a native speaker of a gendered language.

That’s only true in an old model of individual investors who go to shareholder meetings and stay with a company forever. That’s not how the world has worked for decades and decades.

Most rich people don’t have investments in individual stock. They don’t give a fuck if a company goes bust or not. Their investments are in giving out loans, bonds, funds etc. They park their money in a family office, and their money moves around the world more than an air steward.

If a company’s stock goes down 1% they diversify into other stock. They sell to buy gold.

It really isn’t “worse in the long-term” for them. The wealthy. They are getting richer faster than any other period of history and you think they are dumb..? Not working in their own best interest? Even in the long-term..?

They pay people dozens of millions a year to make them the most money possible forever. People absurdly more intelligent than any of us here. People who would centuries ago be genius scientists.

I’m sure they know what they are doing. And they are winning and we are losing.

One is cheeky social fun with mates, the other involves multiple taboo and touchy subjects (specially in corporate spaces). Like sex and hierarchy and cheating.

Why are people pretending all those issue appeared with AI? You think the environment would be less fucked without AI? Artists? Education?

It’s like people complaining about smartphones making kids depressed. Like growing up during an apocalypse wouldn’t be the main cause? Perhaps?

These are the results of the long sharp road of capitalism. With or without “AI” we would be fucked.
