What is your favorite TV show of all time?

I've been rewatching my favorites (Mr. Robot, Andor, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) and I'm curious: What is your favorite show of all time? What makes that your favorite?

Avatar: The Last Airbender.

ApollosArrow@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d

I was thinking that I didn’t have one, but Avatar is one of the one’s I rewatched the most, so it has to be up there. It’s probably between that and The Office.

Leviathan@fedinsfw.app · 2 pts · 14d (2 replies)

Rewatching this for the nth time right now.

Fierro@piefed.social · 1 pts · 13d (1 reply)

Does a version that doesn't look like crap exist? Seems like it's very low res everywhere I can find it, even through the seven seas.

Leviathan@fedinsfw.app · 2 pts · 13d

Honestly the one I'm streaming now looks like crap too. I had torrented a really high quality one a couple years ago, so probably on TPB?

thechadwick@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 15d (3 replies)

I'm no particular order:

Dramas:

  • The Wire (truly incredible TV, maybe the best Shakespeare ever told through Baltimore drug trade)
  • Succession
  • Damages (legal drama)
  • True Detective (wish I could go back and experience watching this for the first time again so bad)
  • Mad Men
  • Widow's Bay (apple TV and absolutely hysterical horror)

Comedies:

  • Arrested Development

  • Veep

  • Silicon Valley

  • Schitt's Creek

    Regularly on in the background:

    • Curb Your Enthusiasm
    • Futurama
    • 30 Rock
    • The Good Place
TheRedSpade@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 15d (1 reply)

The Good Place had no business being as good as it was.

This. This is a rock solid list, dude.

Cowboy Bebop (the animated ver) - Just absolute cinema the whole time. Never watched the live action, probably never will. Soundtrack goes so hard and the voice acting in both English and Japanese are unparalleled imo. Such an imaginative and realistic depiction of the future, especially for the time. Thanks a million to Adult Swim for introducing me to my fav show of all time.

deadbeef79000@lemmy.nz · 10 pts · 14d

I really liked the live action Cowboy Bebop. But then, I never watch the anime. Then again, I don't mind remakes and format changes, so long as it is still well made.

Maiq@piefed.zip · 19 pts · 15d (8 replies)

The Expanse, Fringe, Malcolm in the Middle, Archer, GITS SAC, off the top of my head.

Grimy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 15d (2 replies)

I'm a big fan of sci Fi and the expanse does hit a lot of boxes. It's in my top few as well.

lemmy_at_em@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 15d (1 reply)

I can definitely rewatch The Expanse every few years.

SmoothOperator@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d

I've tried several times to get into it, but I can't seem to get over the acting being sort of second rate. It keeps pulling me out of the story.

theherk@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 15d

I’m really hoping they do the Laconia story now that the requisite years have passed. Or at least enough that the actors will look correct.

dditty@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 14d (2 replies)

Fringe doesn't get mentioned enough nowadays

Star Trek TNG. Without a doubt.

Macgyver is up there, so is Westworld.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d

I do love MacGyver! Grew up on that, Quantum Leap and Wings!

mechoman444@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14d

Encounter at far point is one my favorite sci-fi movies of all time.

VoteNixon2016@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 14d

I'm genuinely curious how you rate the seasons of Westworld, the first season is absolutely one of the best things I've ever watched, and I still enjoyed the second season, but it really declined from there in my opinion

Noctambulist@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 15d

Babylon 5 — just the perfect scifi show for me with a five-season story arc that was planned from the beginning.

Others: Farscape, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dark, The West Wing, Community, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

OldQWERTYbastard@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 14 pts · 15d (1 reply)

Mike Judge's Silicon Valley. The best representation of actual computer nerds I've ever seen.

UncleArthur@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13d

It's different, and arguably better, on second viewing.

undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch · 13 pts · 14d

Mr. Robot. I’m super into the sometimes cheesy “fuck society” mentality. And everything that happens in that show either could or has already happened in reality.

masterspace@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 15d (6 replies)
  • The Simpsons 2-9
  • It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm

All because of their fantastic comedy writing: nuanced, layered jokes, with satisfying stories, characters and plots which leads to endless rewatchability.

  • Community
  • Atlanta

For being weird experimental extremely well written comedies. Rick and Morty's early seasons might make it on this list but I haven't gone back in a while.

  • Breaking Bad
  • The Expanse

For being long serious satisfying dramas with great characters and writing.

  • Dark

Get a special shout-out for being one of the only mystery box shows I've ever seen that sticks the landing.

  • Arrested Development 1-3
  • Parks and Rec
  • 30 Rock
  • The Office

All get shout outs for being great comedies, if not quite at the tier of the above.

Dorgel@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 15d (3 replies)

Since all of these are also my favourites, you may want to try Fleabag for a comedy, and the Wire, Fargo, True Detective and Severance for drama. Fargo might be my favourite series in general, Fargo and the Simpsons, if I could pick two.

masterspace@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 14d

I agree with almost all those choices but I never finished any of those series so didn't put them on.

Severance is the only one on there I disagree with. They may stick the landing, but imho I highly suspect they've fully jumped the shark and are in the "oh fuck, we didn't actually plan for it to go on this long" part of a mystery box. I suspect it will just waste time for like another 2-3 seasons then suddenly end while not answering half the questions from the early seasons ... like virtually all of mystery boxes that aren't Dark do.

garbagebagel@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 13d

Atlanta is so good. There's a Canadian show called Late Bloomer that for some reason gives me similar vibes. It's not really similar other than it being a darkish comedy about a troubled artist, but just something about the writing hits the same way.

Krusty@quokk.au · 1 pts · 14d

  • Frieren
  • ATLA
  • Firefly
Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 14d (3 replies)

ATLA is the GOAT.

Firefly - I'm not into it, but my wife fucking loves it. She had a Firefly wedding, like all themed and stuff. Which I don't understand but whatever.

YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 14d (2 replies)

That's wild. So you don't particularly care for the show, but it was presumably the theme for your wedding as well? Or was this a previous marriage?

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 14d (1 reply)

Not my wedding, haha. Her previous wedding. Our wedding together was conducted by a gay pastor in a park.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 14d

And I send her ex-husband a "fuck you" message once a year, along with a picture of his ex wife happy in glorious locales.

Crackhappy@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 14d

So... funny story. Before I ever watched frieren, I bought a T-shirt about that series in Akihabara. Then when we got home we watched the first season and I regretted not buying several amazing figures from the series while I was there.

rue@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 14d

Tough call. Absolutely depends on mood but right now I’d say Bojack Horseman. One of the few shows that got better all way through and ended at exactly the right time.

Fridam@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 14d

Scrubs, the good place, star trek tng/ds9, doctor who, torchwood

rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 14d

As with movies, foods, music, etc. my "favorites" always shift around depending on my mood, but just now off the top of my head:

  • Doctor Who
  • Star Trek TNG
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000 (which is coming back again, again!)
  • Monty Python's Flying Circus
  • Bob's Burgers
  • Ghosts (the US version)
gjoel@programming.dev · 11 pts · 15d

Always Farscape.

Pronell@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 15d (3 replies)

Community, followed by Fringe and then Justified.

Community is my ideal sitcom: weird, experimental, hilarious, and emotional. It was my comfort show for a very long time. My ringtone comes from that show, Professor Professorson's conspiracy theory ringtone. (Dun dun dunnnnnn)

Fringe is my ideal sci-fi show: weird, far reaching, and is allowed to reach its end.

Justified is my ideal cop show: funny and dark, with a great supporting cast.

MalReynolds@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 14d

Fringe is my ideal sci-fi show: weird, far reaching, and is allowed to reach its end.

Top 5 for me too, but I'd argue it (and Person of Interest) had unfortunately rushed final seasons. Still, gloriously weird, top notch acting, class act writing with some standout moments of utter glory (white tulip, that dandelion poking out to "Only You", my very favourite thing…). Hmm, shall bump it in my rewatch queue.

ulemmyagain@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d (1 reply)

watched justified for the first time a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it.

Pronell@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 14d

Did you binge the whole thing?

I love seasons one and two. It never really goes downhill but those two initial seasons are nearly perfect to me.

If you have also watched Deadwood, you will appreciate them bringing in co-stars from that show here and there.

kurcatovium@piefed.social · 8 pts · 14d (3 replies)

I always struggle to name one best thing at anything. Best movie? IDK, plenty of them are great, can't say which is the best. Favourite colour? Depends on context. Best car? Different each week, as my mood swings. But if I had to pick one tv show and crown it the best, it would be:

Red Dwarf

Hands down the most viewed thing for me. That absurd British humor just clicks with me, just as Monty Python or Black Adder or Black Books did. I used to watch it to fall asleep for years, especially at the college. It was many years ago but I still remember a lot of replicas word by word.

monotremata@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 14d

If you haven't seen it, look up the German sci-fi comedy show Ijon Tichy: Raumpilot. There's a fan translation of the first season and official English subtitles for the second season. It's got a really good off-the-wall energy, and I don't think it's well enough known outside Germany.

garbagebagel@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 13d

Red Dwarf is such good comfort TV. I don't even generally like British humour but that show just fills me with warmth. It's probably mostly the Cat for me if we're being honest, but it is just a good show.

jam12705@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 14d

I'm the same. Red Dwarf is the only favorite thing I really have. I still manage a watch nearly everyday and have seen it through so many times I've lost count.

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 15d (4 replies)

Breaking Bad

I rewatch it ever 2-3 years when it's been long enough to feel fresh again.

partial_accumen@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 15d

Watching Breaking Bad was an amazing experience that I would recommend everyone do once. However, I don't think I can ever take that full ride again. It just has too many people being so horrible to themselves and each other.

darkdemize@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 15d

I will never deny Breaking Bad its accolades but I enjoyed BCS more, overall.

renlok@lemmy.zarioth.com · 2 pts · 14d (1 reply)

I liked breaking bad but I always felt like it was too dragged out and they could have told the same story over fewer seasons without losing anything. I felt like there was loads of filler episodes where nothing happened

FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 14d

After Gus was killed it definitely wasn't quite as good, and in particular, the last season felt superfluous.

Walter's new Nazi pals just weren't as interesting as villains go.

hansolo@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 14d

Only right answer

Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 13d

Omar vs the lawyer. That was the truth no one says.

The Wire explains in each season how crime works.

How each part of society that fails leads to crime flourishing.

When education falls apart, kids have no hope and get into dealing.

When media just wants to sell ads then reporting fails to catch the politicians.

Each facet of failure builds up to a rough life for all.

It may be sometimes slow but it really makes you see the real world for what it is.

Nefara@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 15d (2 replies)

I think as far as shows that I love and come back to, and that I keep thinking of and want to own on physical media:

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
She-Ra: Princesses of Power
The Good Place
The Addams Family (the black and white one)
Parks & Recreation
Star Trek TNG, Lower Decks, and Deep Space 9

lemmy_at_em@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 15d (1 reply)

TNG, Lower Decks, and DS9 are definitely comfort shows for me. Like a warm fuzzy blanket. I am surprised about how easy it is to rewatch Lower Decks.

  • Xena Warrior Princess: I'm bi. Enough said.

Probably Deadwood.

I like the complexity of the characters - nobody’s truly good, nobody’s truly bad.

all 3 stargate series. oldtrek mostly, nutrek is just not even close, other than prodigy and lower decks, snw i find its still not good considering what other people are saying. use a different showrunner.

maybe spn although its through comprehensive videos of the seasons which fans graciously posted on youtube, mostly s1-5. inuyasha, not yashime or whatever it is, because fans made it weird, by making it a grooming situation rin+ sesshomaru. blue gender, Fullmetal alchemist, the og series. the new one is somewhat all over place. pre-disney takeover of marvel shows. gifted, runaways, AOS.

grimm might be up someones alley, it has a spn spin to it, and it ended as it should, and not dragged on forever like with supernatural.

a short series, DAMAGES, with glenn close, if you ignore the network changes that included sex scences for some reason.

medical drama: House, ER just not the last few seasons, which one of the actors became the showrunner of pitt. not any of those new ones with nobody actors i keep seeing on youtube.

bio shows, like monsters inside me.

Impossible to answer. There's a lot of different variations of "Favourite".

  • Favourite comfort show: (ie..rewatchability) Star Trek: TNG. Honourable Mention goes to Quantum Leap.

  • Favourite Drama to rewatch an entire series once a year of so: Battlestar Galactic Remake.

  • Favourite Comedy of all time (similar to comfort show...what's the comedy I can just pop in a random episode of and enjoy): Night Court (The original one) with honourable mentions to Community and How I Met Your Mother.

No one of those three beats the other two. They just exist in different worlds.

corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 13d

I was gonna say Firefly. "Objects in Space" is amazing.

After reading all the replies, I'm just here to add:

  • Rome
  • OZ
  • The Wire

And a global mention to 90's and 00's Sci-Fi !

In addition to the shows you mention I'm really enjoying Silo right now, and found A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Severance to be really interesting.

It’s really hard to say, there’s severance, breaking bad, generation kill, common side effects

and a lot of good tv shows out there

The Day Today. The Thick Of It. Time Trumpet.

These shows have nothing in common. No, siree.

Gonna go with something differrent here

Adventure Times

Quite long running series that starts super silly but actually does explain all the weirdness that you see from the beginning over its runtime. You think its just a cute strange setting with candy people, some magic and a planet half destroyed that looks a bit like Earth. But there's a whole story behind it and it slowly unfolds more and more over the seasons.

Ones that I deeply love to the core but wouldn't consider comfort TV:

  • Sense8
  • Bojack Horseman
  • Fleabag (and I will probably never watch it again tbh)
  • Atlanta
  • Heated Rivalry

Comfort shows:

  • Heated Rivalry (ya twice)
  • Law & Order: SVU (yes I know it's copaganda but I will die for Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler and you can pry this show from my cold dead fictional-cop-loving hands)
  • Red Dwarf
  • Doctor Who (the RTD era)
  • Dinosaurs (the criminally underrated puppet one from the 1990s that every adult needs to rewatch immediately)

Honourable mentions for me have mostly been mentioned by other commenters but Schitt's Creek, Arrested Development, The Good Place. And one I haven't seen in this thread yet, Resident Alien!

Like others my favorites change a lot, but having just rewatched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood… Dude what an awesome show. Always cry at least 5 times watching it. For sure deserving of a fixed spot on any top 10s.

And one I haven’t seen anyone mention: Andor. The best Star Wars anything ever.

Nice try recovery question scalper. Guessing Blue Heelers won't get you into any of my accounts.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

It's gross, it's wrong, it's mean, it's hilarious.

1-12 were golden seasons, 13 is became what they are joking about.

1hitsong@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 12d (1 reply)

1000%

The cracks form quickly in 13, but Time's Up for the Gang, The gang solves the bathroom problem, and the gang gets new wheels are great.

14 has Paddy's has a jumper, the gang solves global warming, a woman's right to chop are good episodes. The others range from meh to always skip.

15 was a total wash.

And from there, I don't care.

i read in an article a while back they looked tired and wanted to give up by end of s14. obviously, if you know the actors, kaitlyn, charlie, rob, glenn they dont have much going on for them as far as hollywood goes. they are kinda stuck with the show they cant create. also thier bizarre behaviour, as in plastic surgery and robs name change and his questionable colloborations.

even the isaip sub, the people were kinda shocked at robs trying to stay in hollywood elite circle.
