Do you get excessive RAM usage?

I've had three hard system crashes because something spawned an endless amount of winedbg and conhost.exe processes until the memory is full and I can't figure out why.

I've had to RMA plenty of otherwise perfectly usable motherboards because Windows had fucked up their firmware with unprompted updates, bordering on zero-click malware behaviour. The farther that shit stays from Linux, the better.

A blackout is just a loss of power. Nothing complicated about it. There are obvious human and societal consequences, but as far as the infrastructure is concerned, a blackout usually means that protection devices have been tripped and the system has protected itself from greater damage.

A brownout means that the electric grid (or interconnection), for some reason, can't supply enough power to satisfy the demand, but protection devices haven't tripped yet. It can result in momentary power losses, drops in voltage, drops in frequency, or some generators getting desynchronized with the rest of the grid. If reactive loads (like HVAC motors) go offline momentarily, they can cause spikes in power consumption, which can overload circuits and trip safety devices.

A UPS needs to immediately switch to battery power when there are signs of an imminent power loss. A brownout might cause a consumer-grade UPS to switch on and off repeatedly, which the inverter circuit probably doesn't like.

At the same time, I liked .NET's no-nonsense naming of namespaces. When I see something like System.Threading.Tasks, I can immediately recognise that it's a namespace that deals with task-based parallelism. Then you have tokio in Rust and I want to stab the person that came up with the name. Same for clap and serde. They mean nothing unless you already know what those packages do.

What you described is more or less consistent with Schrödinger's views.

In the Copenhagen interpretation, a quantum system is described by a wave function (the probability density of all of its possible states; the cat is maybe dead and maybe alive) until it is observed, at which point it collapses into one of its possible states (the cat is definitively dead or definitively alive).

As far as I can tell, in Schrödinger's views, there is no superposition and there is no collapse, and a system is described directly by its wave function, which changes over time.

But this is all just interpretation. I don't even know where to start looking for empirical evidence that supports one or the other, or whether there's even a point philosophizing about it.

Both Lutris and Heroic are front ends that manage the compatibility tools and runtime environments of Windows applications.

  • Lutris provides deeper, more advanced configuration options. It's better if you want to tinker. Lately it's been having some difficulties with zombie processes and failing to shut down games.

  • Heroic is a more streamlined experience with most of the advanced options tucked away in sub-menus, and it has storefront integrations for GOG, Epic, and I think Amazon. For downloading and installing games, it's comparable to Steam. I use it exclusively for games I bought on GOG.

  • Faugus Launcher is similar to Lutris, but lightweight, reliable, and without the zombie process issues. I use it for most non-Steam games.

  • Bottles is a Flatpak app that runs apps in a sandboxed environment, i.e. it doesn't expose your filesystem to the apps. It also tends to have fewer compatibility issues than other runners.

The Turing test only measures one thing: how well a given algorithm can pass the Turing test. It's been mythologized to the point of irrelevance.

While I have people's attention: "Schrödinger's cat" is the polar opposite of what people think it is. Erwin Schrödinger hated and strongly disagreed with the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics, which holds that quantum mechanical systems are indeterministic until observed or measured. He did not come up with the "Schrödinger's cat" thought experiment to explain superposition -- he invented it to illustrate, in a macroscopic and intuitive way, why he thought Bohr's and Heisenberg's interpretation was stupid.

I'm not saying that everyone who doesn't get an office job should immediately become a tradie. When you have nothing else to offer, just having some industry certificates is an advantage. Even if the certificate is unrelated to the job. My first job was assembly machine operator in a factory. My boss straight up told me that he hired me because of my Cisco and ECDL certs that I got in high school (for free because Europe).

If you don't get the office job you wanted, you've still opened up some options. Tradie life isn't glamorous, but it pays better than complaining on an internet forum.

And if you do get a job and it doesn't work out, you'll still have something to fall back on.
