Hi! Lifelong climber (grew up on doing free climbs) and I have some thoughts.
First off, please go to a climbing gym or two and take a beginners class. I can't account for someone being an asshole but I can tell you that older climbers are definitely excited when someone's interested in their thing, like most usually are. With that said, I want to give you a fair warning. My number one concern for someone of your stature would be foot/ankle injuries and pulley injuries (fingers) with rotator cuff being second.
With that said, I completely think you could do bouldering and frankly the fact that you're already a frequent gym goes/weight lifter means you have a, forgive the pun, a leg up on most who are gonna walk in that gym. Take it easy, don't try and do anything absurd, and have a good time. If you're renting shoes from the gym then keep in mind that climbing shoes are a WHOLE thing and finding a pair that work and don't completely murder your feet is a project in and of itself even with average sized feet, your size 16s might be a bit of a secondary project tbh. But spend some time on a wall and see how you feel about it truly after having someone give you some pointers as it's an activity that is closer to 75% technique and 25% strength so knowing some beta (climber speak for "meta" - knowledge of a route/problem) actually goes a long ways.
Edit: Seriously though, the difference between an everyday rental shoe and a shoe that is higher quality and fitted properly to your foot actual does make a tangible difference in how you "feel" and whether you get positive response from the wall/foot connection. Good traction will ensure you can get grip even on the face.

The point is not “how dare they betray people who were already failing them.” The point is that, in trying to save themselves through a desperate gamble, they still made a choice that helped hand more power to someone whose openly stated agenda threatened a whole lot of other vulnerable people, including many who had nothing to do with their abandonment.
You can understand why someone makes a desperate choice without pretending the consequences disappear. Those are two different things.
So yes, the Democratic Party absolutely deserves blame for abandoning them, lying to them, and treating their lives as disposable. But that does not magically erase the fact that voting for Trump meant accepting the risk, or certainty, that immigrants, queer people, women, leftists, and plenty of others would be crushed harder too.
Here’s an alternative perspective on that alternative perspective.
Their Hail Mary as you described it relied on a known factor of persecution of immigrants of all types, the LGBTQ+ community, the entirety of anyone who is (or is perceived to be) a “leftist”, and women as a whole.
So, they were willing to sell out all those people to be thrown in known horrors that were only going to ratchet up even further for their Hail Mary.
Sure it’s a Sophie’s Choice situation maybe I guess but also. Fuck em.
They gambled with the future of so many people. Including their own.
Don’t worry I still blame the base of American voters who we all know are the ride or die’s for this bullshit but there’s enough blame to go around to look at those margins that pushed it past the tipping point.

But, as someone who’s in a few of those above categories it’s not something I’ll soon be forgiving nor forgetting.

You don't get to tell people who are harmed, oppressed, and marginalized that they have to play nice with their oppressors. If you choose to take that task upon yourself, that's fine and noble but you don't tell a rape victim that they have to speak to their rapist after they realize they might have done something wrong. That's not how this works. That person wanted LGBTQ people harmed. Point blank. You don't tell LGBTQ people to play nice with them now.

Edit: it appears Truman actually tried to make a national health insurance act happen and was defeated by anti-communist sentiments, the American Medical Association, and republicans fear mongering and “they’re gonna raise your taxes!!!!” rhetoric. It would have been a part of the social security expansion but alas, congress is corrupt and Americans are gullible (being generous).
