Just to play devil's advocate: Mario is without a doubt the oldest recognizable character that still has some modern appearances. You can't really take pong and some shitty mobile game as a comparison.
Kids man... I remember back in the day being asked to review a gaming site a young'un was trying to get off the ground and I had to correct them that Mario was NOT created by Atari and man, they were ADAMANT.

I think Pac Man is the oldest, but only by a year.

It gets very blurry in the early days of video games. Ahoy made a great video about just that, actually: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uHQ4WCU1WQc&pp=ygUYYWhveSBlYXJsaWVzdCB2aWRlbyBnYW1l
Basically, there's earlier games than pacman, but what actually constitutes a video game starts to become a much less trivial question.

Nobody who has a broccoli haircut knows anything in general

He's probably aware that he's doing something. And whatever that is means he's getting views and that's all that matters.

Its even funnier because Nintendo's brand name is printed three times on that cartridge.
SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y
Yeah but it says Atari twice
RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y
It says Atari also 3 times. Also Sears.
Todd_cross@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 1y
And Coleco
jordanlund@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y
Yeah, Sears had their own licensed knock off of the Atari 2600.

But what about Green Mario??
Bonesince1997@lemmy.world · 28 pts · 1y
Funny because it's NES (1983/85) Mario over a N64 (1996/97) controller. Idiots
RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 1y
I guarantee you that N64 controller is the wireless reissue for the Nintendo Switch and not a real genuine N64 controller that plugs into an N64.

I played these games when I was a kid (80's):
Speed Race
Tank
The games were still being played more than 10 years later and they had copycat versions floating around.
