The internet used to scream at you when you went online. Now it’s the reverse.

Empricorn@feddit.nl · 6 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm confused. I thought we were talking about the internet, not the sound your mom makes?

MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 1y

If you think your mom isn't on the internet, have I got a hot URL for you.

TeamAssimilation@infosec.pub · 3 pts · 1y

I swear the faster modems also made a bell-like “clong” sound

I, too, remember the times when we had to sacrifice a robot every time we wanted to connect to the internet.

The Pipe Gods must be appeased

  • hit of nostalgia if you're old
  • education if you're young
Perodis@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

Watching that was a huge hit of nostalgia, was saying “Mm mmmm” and making a stank face it was so good

Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y (1 reply)

It was more of a: PEEEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOOOO-AAAAAHHHHHHH-EYON-EYON

bisby@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (1 reply)

There was a checkbox to mute the noise on the dialer. We had 2 phone lines, so I've been terminally online since windows 3.11, and I very rarely heard heard the dial up noise

TeamAssimilation@infosec.pub · 5 pts · 1y

That sound was the best part of connecting to the internet, like a liminal space

Treczoks@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

When I was that age, the internet did not make modem sounds. Because the fridge-sized computers in the server room (with way less power than a cell phone) had no dialup.

Being able to log in to the internet with an actual modem came much later.

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 1y

Hell, that was the sound of my games loading.
