If kirk was right, and most gun violence was black on black, does that make his death a dei killing?
FistingEnthusiast@lemmynsfw.com · 9 pts · 343d
I'm just happy that it happened
Although I worry about the fallout
Cassanderer@thelemmy.club · 3 pts · 343d
Did that count as gang violence? Great...

Every year, on the anniversary of Charlie's death, I will do a shot to celebrate.

I'm saddened to see how many people on this thread are just fine with killing a strong advocate for values that they do not hold.
This kind of hate just entrenches the "other team" deeper In their support of those other values, which doesn't just hurt you. It hurts the rest of us who hold similar values to yours.
It also makes it harder to differentiate our values from theirs because this is exactly what they do to the "other" and what we claim to be against.
Hate is the path to the dark side.
SuperEars@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 343d
I am sad that I am ok with a strong advocate for values I do not hold, ending up murdered.
Values are not universally valid.
The values held by this dead person were harming society by the theft and denial of human rights for others.
MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 342d
Totally agree. I feel there is a difference between quietly feeling evil met with consequences and celebrating a murder.
It happened, society might be better off, but taking joy from murder and feeling that is good is likely to lead to much more death and mayhem.
Imagine someone murdered AOC and thousands celebrated. Would you be more or less likely to politically reconcile with people from that political group?
I would be less likely, which leads the whole society toward civil war and horrific bloodshed.
MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 342d
There are people who feel your values are invalid. Better watch your back if they feel the way you do about how to handle that.

Waah.

I'm saddened by people who are OK with a man using his very public platform to say things like this, and it's very clear they hate their own children. Please explain to me, if you have children, why do you support their murder? Sick and demented. Disgusting.
There's no place in this world for violence against children, but you disagree. Why?
MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 342d
Where did I even imply any of that vile crap you vomited up? You clearly lack the capacity to understand basic decency or form a simple argument worth discussing.
FistingEnthusiast@lemmynsfw.com · 7 pts · 343d
I'm fine with the fact that a harmful, hateful person who inspired people to perpetrate violence against vulnerable people is dead
That's all
The world is a better place without him, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise
If you don't think that people have been murdered by someone inspired by that worthless piece of shit, then you're delusional due to lack of oxygen from up on that high horse of yours

Nice - that will win friends and influence people. Keep it up.

MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 340d
I agree with that. I don't think that makes it okay to murder him, while you do.
Paddzr@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 340d
No one sane said its okay to murder him. I'm fine with those being called "far left" fuck em, it's same level of grifters the right got.
We need less extremes.

You've marked your account as a bot, perhaps unintentionally. But you seem like a human. You can disable this in settings. You should because there is an option to filter all bit comments out so people might not see you.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 343d
And I bet I can guess what side of the political spectrum they generally lie on
jjjalljs@ttrpg.network · 51 pts · 343d
I don't know how you could stay close with maga people now. That sounds extremely difficult.
Not a fan of "sick" used in this context. I don't think there was any evidence that the alleged shooter suffered mental illness. Writing off disagreeable actions as sickness maligns people with actual illness.
Also, "ever" is a pretty broad claim. I don't think violence is typically the best solution, and arguably there were more tools left in the box to stop Kirk, but ultimately every right has to be backed by "or I'll stop you" or it's at risk. If masked men come to abduct you, violence is likely an appropriate response. Shooting a giant talking head, arguably not justified even if he's fanning the flames of hate and stochastic terrorism.
But overall it wasn't a boot licking capitulation, so that's nice. I didn't watch it live since I rarely watch TV.
MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 343d
There is a point when violence is a potentially valid response, but the bar for that is very high.
For example, assassinating a general who has and will continue to slaughter innocent civilians. Even then, the consequences have to be considered - do you stop the murders, or martyr him and make things worse, or does the next guy just continue?
Kirk spoke vile values, but did not deserve death. The answer to all the kirks out there is to sharpen your arguments and learn how to deny him control of the narrative. He's been embarrassed before, but the powerful backers make it difficult for those losses to be widely seen.
The Democratic party needs political warriors who do the research and have the oratory skills to directly destroy bullshit. They need to take multiple seminars from Jasmine Crockett, Bernie Sanders, and AOC.
jjjalljs@ttrpg.network · 19 pts · 343d
I don't think this is the complete solution, because of the consolidation of power in the hands of the wealthy. You could have the best arguments in the world, but if YouTube promotes your opponent instead of you, that's an uphill battle. If they get millions in funding for advertising, staff, and research, and you don't, that's not a fight won merely by sharpness of wit.
People talk about the marketplace of ideas as if solely the better idea will win. Stuff wins in marketplaces for dubious reasons like funding and familiarity rather than merit all the time.
That's not to say we should just shoot all the republicans. Rather, this is a conflict on many fronts, and "they have almost all the money and thus control" is a big tactical concern. I don't know how to fix that.
funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 343d
yeah I mean look at the Clinton Impeachment, the Drudge Report, that guy who shot a BLM protestor... conservative pockets are deep.
The solution is to regulate all news outfits to enforced neutrality and a clear separate of fact and opinion which can't be reported adjacently.
lka1988@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 342d
We already had that: the Fairness Doctrine. Guess who repealed it?
That's right, it was Reagan!

Shitty actors playing president have done arguably more damage to the country than all the rest of them combined, and there have only been two of them.
MasterBlaster@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 342d
I feel you are absolutely right. I also feel that we need to be able to look in the mirror and honestly know we are better than the beliefs we disavow.
Hypocracy is not a good look. We all know the "right" regularly celebrates the harm to "libtards".
Our values say that is wrong. If we turn around and do the exact same thing to them, we betray those values and show we're no better than them.
TBi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 343d
I’m assuming (hoping)he means regular conservative people, not MAGA types. You can be conservative and not support Trump.
F_State@midwest.social · 35 pts · 342d
He never made "light of the murder of a young man", he called Trump out on his hypocrisy. In fact Kirk was barely mentioned. The segment was almost entirely ripping on Trump.

So, what, now we have the state cleansed version of Kimmel?

He did not. You should probably watch or read his monologue before commenting.

He didn't apologize at all, in a middle finger to Sinclair broadcasting who said that was a condition for him going back on their air.
Zephorah@discuss.online · 3 pts · 343d
I just watched it, no capacity to do so at work. It was good. And he slammed Carr.
What kills me is they’re totally getting away with doing the same to Colbert simply because they weren’t so brazen about it. The fevered aggression of a cause was there to try to drive it.
Next headline will probably be Carr being fired.
neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 342d
Agreed completely, it's absolute horseshit what they're doing, but at least Kimmel got put back on in a show of defiance somewhat.
They never should have folded like that in the first place to the chairman of the FCC, but this is our new authoritarian reality.

Cassanderer@thelemmy.club · -28 pts · 343d
Yuck, glad I missed that.
Well I appreciate him and Colbert recognizing the party and power for what they are to some degree, they also think the establishment Democrats are able to run an opposition that could beat them so it kind of ruins it.
These guys are the establishment and their money has left them misguided on america's siruation here. It is not a messaging problem, it is a lack of value problem.
lemjukes@sopuli.xyz · 31 pts · 343d
Did you even watch the monologue?
Or did you only read the headline and then hop up on that masturbation spot you call your high horse?
Genuinely one of the most uninformed, naive, social media polisci bullshit takes I've read in a while.
Cassanderer@thelemmy.club · -21 pts · 343d
Piss off with your full defense of anything the Republicans attack on fairly in any way.
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 343d
You've no fuckin clue what you're even railing against here. You're lazy.
Cassanderer@thelemmy.club · -10 pts · 343d
I would say that about you here. Both Kimmel and Colbert don't have any credibility as Democrat establishment cheerleaders. Well they should not be canceled for criticizing the republicans, they are by Constitution weak and will help get those Republicans elected by helping the Democratic candidates that can't win get the nominations. So you see, it is you that is very mistaken here. But I suppose you get some ivy league suits on TV to tell you not to believe your own Lying Eyes and you will, a lot of people well, because they are sheep.
TrickDacy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 343d
You have no idea what I believe just like you have no idea what the monologue contained. Further evidence of mental laziness.
Cassanderer@thelemmy.club · -6 pts · 343d
Any reasonable person would see my point here. While Kimmel is right to be against the administration, in doing so he has become a cheerleader for the opposition which is doomed to fail. How do you not get this by now? And I am the asshole here? Seriously, why don't you go back and read about the last three presidential elections and then tell me who is the asshole here.
