A family living in Queens argues all the time as the patriarch of the household tries to rule with an iron fist but fails.

ChrysanthemumIndica@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 355d (5 replies)

King of Queens? (Or better yet, Kevin Can F**k Himself?)

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 3 pts · 355d (4 replies)

I've never watched that one, so … no?

Tell me about the show, though. Sounds interesting.

ChrysanthemumIndica@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 355d (3 replies)

Haha fair enough, it felt like it could have been a dark twist.

Kevin Can Go F**k Himself is really interesting though, and I definitely recommend it. In many ways a dark satire and criticism of King of Queens specifically, but also all of those "goofy" sitcoms with a lead who's an incompetent funny guy.

I don't want to reveal too much though because I think it's best to experience it without prep, but please be warned it can be jarring.

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 2 pts · 355d (1 reply)

Do you need to know King of Queens before watching the other one?

MystValkyrie@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 355d

If you're passingly familiar with the tropes present in any husband-and-wife sitcom and enjoy dark comedies, I think you'll appreciate the genre deconstruction without any confusion.

That being said, the show bears a strong resemblance to King of Queens, its spiritual successor Kevin Can Wait, and to a lesser extent Roseanne, containing a handful of references to those shows. Having watched all those made me enjoy this show even more.

MystValkyrie@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 355d

Kevin Can F**k Himself* is like King of Queens meets Death Note and I love it.

::: spoiler spoiler Basically Carrie and Roseanne teaming up to become a crime duo is something I never knew I needed. :::

Shall I give the answer or does anybody else want to take a crack at this?

Hint: think old. Very old. Like me.

The people need to know! (And it's too early in the morning for me to guess now 😅)

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 3 pts · 354d (2 replies)

Who am I to deny The People?

All in the Family.

ChrysanthemumIndica@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 354d (1 reply)

Dang, that's a good one. The People are appeased!

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 3 pts · 354d

It's one of the all-time greats. It carefully walked that line between social commentary and comedy and is one of the few shows that had a realistic home for the protagonists. Sort of the anti-Friends in that regard.

A group of strangers are forced by shipwreck to live on an island with no modern amenities, using only their wits, and their dogged determination, to survive both the perils of the island (and its occasional visitors) and their own internal social stresses.

ChrysanthemumIndica@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 355d (2 replies)

Omg, I haven't seen Gilligan's Island since I was a kid 😅

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 3 pts · 355d (1 reply)

Got it!

Gilligan's Island was, in fact, the show. The fact that the description matches Lost is just endless entertainment for me.

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 2 pts · 354d

As a side note, you can sing "Amazing Grace" to the tune of Gilligan's Island and vice versa. You can also sing Dickinson's "Because I would not stop for Death" to both tunes.

Now that you know this you will never be able to unhear this.

You're welcome.

Jf2540@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 355d (1 reply)

Is it, Lost?

ZDL@lazysoci.al · 2 pts · 355d

No, but I carefully worded it so that people would think of Lost. 🤭

LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 355d (2 replies)

Is it survivor?
