I never had a problem with my parents in terms of abuse, but I have had people tell me that the boys who were bullying me in school just liked me and I should be nicer to them.
This came from teachers, no less. Sometimes even women teachers.
I know, right? The same people who flatly said that enforcing copyright would "destroy [their] business model" (yes, they were that brazen!) are now whining that someone is doing to them what they literally did to all of humanity.
Or maybe the fact there never was an actual trade deficit? That the "trade deficit" is a mathematical byproduct of things like the US Dollar being the world's reserve currency? Something that the USA wants, but as a byproduct makes American goods more expensive abroad, hence fewer people buying (slipshod) American products?
I guess we'll see as the USA reaches the point where people stop using US dollars as a basis currency how quickly that trade deficit vanishes when the US dollar plunges into a hole.
In the last election, Trump won by a hair. Also in the last election, almost a third of the voting populace decided to sit that one out.
In effect two thirds of the American electorate was fine with Trump as president. One third directly voted for him, one third just said "meh, both sides" and went about their day.
This is exactly my issue with Catan. It suffers from a severe snowball effect disguised as strategy. If you have as few as three unlucky rolls especially when paired with a poor initial placement, you are mathematically locked out of the game. You end up trapped as a "zombie player": unable to win, unable to meaningfully impact the outcome, but socially obligated to sit at the table for another 45 minutes asking, "Anyone want some sheep?" and occasionally getting a pity trade from the more empathic players at the table.
Meanwhile, the player who got lucky early on praises himself (because it's always a guy doing this!) for his "strategic genius," when in reality, the game's mechanics simply rewarded his initial dice rolls.
Like Monopoly, Catan has neither catch-up mechanics, nor any meaningful alternate routes to victory, meaning a bad start basically dictates a long, agonizing, and ultimately unfun endgame for all but the lucky one or two.
I read Always Coming Home by Ursula K. LeGuin in my teens. It was a very important book to me that I keep coming home to.
