Trump says he'll attend Pete Hegseth's gathering of generals to tell them 'how well we're doing militarily'

Donald Trump in an interview with NBC News Sunday, confirmed that he plans to attend an unusual meeting organized by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that will gather hundreds of senior military officers near Washington on Tuesday.

Hegseth last week summoned hundreds of senior military leaders, who are stationed all over the world, to Washington for a meeting of the Pentagon’s top brass.

Senior admirals and generals were not informed beforehand about the purpose of the meeting.

Yeah that’s a lot of HVT in one area.

But that aside, I wouldn’t be super shocked if this turns into loyalty pledge-a-palooza. Which would be… interesting.

The OPSEC incompetence is staggering, but he's an idiot who failed in basic operational security multiple times so should we be surprised?

maybe, but you can be sure that all elevators will work fine (maybe they'll even disable any safety measures just to be "safe")

I will pray for a military coup on Tuesday

Here comes the Hitler Oath

peoplebeproblems@midwest.social · 32 pts · 344d (8 replies)

Oddly enough, I just learned today apparently Hitler didn't demand the German military to swear an oath, two Generals came up with the idea to have the military swear to Hitler in hopes of drawing him away from the Nazi Party. Which clearly didn't work as they planned.

After this article, with this other knowledge, I would be willing to bet that shits going to get REAL fucky.

If they ask these officers to commit high treason then that's it. The military is there to protect constitution. With no military to protect it, no court to uphold it, no congress to abide it then the United States is truly over. (Though I still maintain that was April 15, 2025).

There's a tiny, tiny, tiny possibility that we are too pessimistic and that maybe they do mean "they'd die for the country." They could simply recite the oath theyve already sworn, and be completely legally protected.

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God

Trump, and Hegseth, aren't men of honor. They seen honor as a joke, a weakness. Nonsense. To me that appears to be expected from them, as honor requires empathy, which they lack.

The question then becomes do our senior officers have empathy?

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 344d (1 reply)

Why april 15?

peoplebeproblems@midwest.social · 7 pts · 343d

I have that marked as when Due Process was eliminated

Treczoks@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 344d (1 reply)

But according to their oat, they could take care of Trump, who is clearly a domestic enemy to the constitution.

peoplebeproblems@midwest.social · 2 pts · 343d

Yeah. If honor, integrity, empathy mean anything to them. That's the part I'm worried about.

They're not corporate machines at least?

Modern_medicine_isnt@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 343d (1 reply)

I mean honor, empathy, tradition... all of that, on a personal level are technically a weakness in a head to head competition. Saturday morning cartoons lied, cheaters do win. But on a larger scale than one person, and longer time span than one day or even decade, they give a group a significant advantage. Trump et all only care about themselves and the very near future. That is why thier statements resonate with a fair number of people who care only about the same.

peoplebeproblems@midwest.social · 1 pts · 343d

And that's kind of why I bring it up.

This isn't an individual level thing. It sounds like they intend to make it one.

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 343d (1 reply)

two Generals came up with the idea to have the military swear to Hitler in hopes of drawing him away from the Nazi Party.

I don't understand this... is there a typo here or is my brain just malfunctioning?

peoplebeproblems@midwest.social · 2 pts · 343d

I'm an engineer not an English major, but I don't think there are typos.

But it is a really fucking weird thing to read and hurts my brain too. Apparently the story that Hitler demanded the oath was started amongst draftees, which makes sense as it's the guy you're swearing an oath to.

Substance_P@lemmy.world · 71 pts · 344d

It almost seems like a setup to pledge fealty just one day before the government shuts down. But of course, it's common practice to pull 800 generals and admirals from their global stations and place them in a single room in front of Trump.

Kurious84@lemmings.world · 70 pts · 344d

Ah there it is. Kiss the ring.

Treczoks@lemmy.world · 48 pts · 344d

So they do plan to have the generals swear an oath on him personally...

Great, so they'll have TWO unqualified hacks with little (Hegseth) to no (Trump) military experience telling them how they're doing their jobs wrong.

Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 24 pts · 344d (3 replies)

There's also the (honestly pretty unlikely) possibility of the highest ranking fragging in US history

All enemies foreign and domestic

takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 36 pts · 344d

Well they will be making generals to swear an oath to him, so of course he wants to be present.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 34 pts · 344d

This is more sounding like asking for a loyalty oath to trump.

AmidFuror@fedia.io · 26 pts · 344d

It will be hard for all of those high-ranking military members to ignore how utterly incompetent Hegseth and Trump are. Not that they shouldn't know already, but having it on display right in front of you and having the opportunity to discuss it with other people you respect in person will be a whole other thing.

Of course there will be crazies that support this administration, but I am hopeful this will be a good way for the sane to gain some solidarity on the need to be ready to terf these morons when there are illegal orders.

I dunno... those generals might do the right thing for the country and remove trump.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 8 pts · 344d

You'd like to think so. But if open my history book... Here it is! This exact thing happened before and the generals gladly abandoned their previous oaths, only to find about two third of themselves on the wrong end of the muzzle when they were no longer necessary.
