Miller: “The tragedy is a political party and a movement that has ripped down our statues, our monuments, our holidays, our heroes, our heritage,” Miller continued, ignoring the fact that the Trump administration has itself called for the removal of statues that do not align with its version of history.
“The Republican Party under President Trump celebrates beauty again and beautification again, and just as President Trump has beautified Washington D.C., now he’s repairing, finally, an area of the White House that has been left in disrepair for decades.”

White supremacy dog whistle.
Columbus was a rapist and murderer. Confederate statues were erected during Jim Crow. The "heritage" of the US is one of subjugation of non-white people (a definition that has changed multiple times).

I mean there are things in American history that are worth celebrating. But it's usually the nameless people who struggled against the ones they build statues of.
I do find the whole concept of feeling some sense of accomplishment and pride over things you personally had nothing to do with to be kind of distasteful. If you aren't living your life in a way that you can feel proud of your own actions and instead feel the need to act as if you have some ownership of things that happened before you were born then maybe that's a sign that you need to make a change.

And removing these statues and monuments and holidays, and whatever don’t deny the white nationalist and racist past of our country. It just means that we no longer choose to celebrate it.

Funny you mention Columbus. Remember when Italians weren't white enough to be a part of that club? Even Irish weren't white enough.
stringere@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 328d
Yeah, even the wops and micks weren't considered white for a while. There's always been someone else to blame for your situation in the US.

And let's not forget that "modern art bad" is just more (traditional) western supremacy in a pseudointellectual trench coat.
EQUATOR had a cool interview that touched on the birth of modern art a few days ago:

While this is true I feel it fails to acknowledge the real history of Europe. Europe was always involved in cultural exchanges with people from other continents, albeit at a slower rate than in modern times. This idea that there is some authentic, independent, ancestral European culture that we need to return to is itself a white supremacist fabrication. So while it's good that people started to turn away from this myth, it's also necessary to acknowledge that it was always an illusion. Those traditional European arts and other cultural cornerstones were also influenced by multiple cultures.

This is a common misconception amongst civilizations throughout history. Usually it reveals a profound misunderstanding/assumption that the people who are being exploited to make those gains will never speak up or rebuke the institutions that take advantage of them.
I'm sure there were Western colonial powers that thought their particularly despicable brand of chattel slavery would last forever and lead to unlimited growth for slave owners and the state. But the people of Haiti and Jamaica revolted. The American civil war followed.
We are certainly at a point which no human has ever seen before today but there will always be "self-cleansing" cycles so to speak.

Name one other war where the losers are celebrated as much as the First American Civil War (may as well get used to calling it that now).
This is why, when one people conquer another people, they destroy all of their art and culture and literature and history. You give them an inch and they take a mile. They lost...they can either not accept that and keep fighting, or they can assimilate, willingly or by force if necessary. Tale as old as time. Slavery was a third "option" for lack of a better word, but not after that war.

Many of the statues and monuments weren't historical. They were built by racist orgs still trying to hold on to hope for the confederacy. Which also lasted such a short time that its existence is negligible as a source of historical significance. Also, if you are that invested in art and culture, maybe be an artist instead of being a complete tool?

I wonder if there is a statistically significant inverse correlation between artistic ability and despotic actions.
It's plausible enough that your generalized rule might be legit.
stringere@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 327d
In my experience with people who claim the title 'artist' it seems a fair amount of them are arrogant and some border or were full on narcissists. This is not to be confused with artists I have known. I am addressing specifically those who go about claiming 'artist' as an identity and wielding it like a club as if calling themselves that qualifies them to be a general pest to be around.
I can understand the prevalence of these traits in 'artists' because it does take some extreme self confidence or arrogance to believe you have a unique vision that can change the world through your chosen medium. So maybe there is something to that. Frustrated that their self perceived genius is unrecognized and their talent unappreciated and not bring able to persuade others to their vision, they turn to forcing their viewpoint on others.
Just rambling, pay me no mind.

Was this the Union’s grave mistake that they allowed them to continue to live here? To enjoy the freedoms we hold dear and to share our nation with them despite their abhorrent beliefs? They will not allow us the same fate if they find themselves in a similar position.
That’s the difference between us and them.

Miller is like an ex-boyfriend who won’t leave, constantly gaslighting you into believing that his being a total prick is somehow your fault, and that all the abuse he dishing out is coming from a good place, while he unzips to pleasure himself once more at the video tapes hes made of children packed like farmed lobsters, thanks to his Family Separation policies.
He looks like a penis made a wish at a Zoltar machine. And is now desperately trying to fool the world into thinking hes a real person. Sunken dead eyes, that seem like they were drawn on in a hurry, that stare at you with all the warmth of a junkie youve just refused to give a dollar to. His whole plan to smash families apart like lego, part of some cunning plan to distract from the fact hes just a giant prick.
But really, you have to admire Stephen Miller’s confidence. It takes a special kind of cunt to talk about “beautifying America” with the same energy as a man polishing a gravestone while the body’s still twitching underneath. Listening to Stephen Miller talking about beauty is like listening to a serial killer giving a Ted talk about how the insides of his victims made him feel as he raped their dead bodies. Even the language itself comes out of his mouth cringing, and looking to self harm from the trauma of ever being in his brain in the first place.

I'm hoping the construction crew lose all licenses they may have. Whoever has been dping the work absolutely does not have the permits necessary for demolition or any of the new construction.
I love that the US is being sued and there is a request for an immediate stop to all work while the legalities are established. I'm surprised there isn't a lawsuit from an historical preservation society of one kind or another.
