Video games with good cave and dungeon ambience music? (Other than TES)

I'm just a casual gamer, I absolutely loved the score in Skyrim and Oblivion but when trying to find other good ambience music for caves/ruins/dungeons I was a bit stumped. I've found people creating this kind of ambient soundtracks and that's great, but I'm still curious about the videogame ones. I tried searching for that and failed.

I'm looking for eerie, natural or mysterious types of tracks, nothing too high energy. The platform or genre of the game doesn't matter.

Have you got any good examples?

I think the Donkey Kong Country OST has some good ones. Especially aquatic ambience and stickerbrush symphony.

Everybody loves aquatic ambience!

Finally I get the time to reply here! The aquatic ambience is cool, but overall I found them too high energy for what I was after. Thanks for the suggestion though, I'm loving the replies

One of the OGs: Diablo II.

I approve! Thanks

The Witcher series also has a great fantasy soundtrack in that vein , if you don't mind the artists allegations... (got confused, it's actually The Elder Scrolls soundtracks composer, Jeremy Soule, with the sexual misconduct allegations)

Other than that the Baldurs Gate 2 Soundtrack was also pretty good iirc.

I haven't played either game and both are on my list. I searched the witcher soundtrack and I think it's really good, I was impressed. But I found the cave/dungeon/crypt music a bit too intense for what I was after. Great suggestion though

I haven't searched BG2... I have hopes of playing the game soon.

Ohhh nooo... What allegations? Can't find anything

janonymous@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 272d (1 reply)

Damn, my bad! Confused the composers. It's Jeremy Soule, the composer of the Elder Scrolls soundtracks, that has sexual misconduct allegations 😬

insert sigh of relief

Give Sunless Skies a shot. Great ambience and the setting is awesome.

Mothra@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 268d (1 reply)

I gave it a shot, found some nice ones there, thanks for the suggestion :)

No sweat friend. Glad I could help!

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and the Bloodstained series of games.

Basically anything by Michiru Yamane is going to have great cave music.

Mothra@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 268d

I looked this up and the music was great, but I found it too epic and/or expressive for what I was after. I guess that's what art is about, right? I'm definitely keeping this in mind for something else, I was looking for something more mellow in this occasion. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm loving the answers so far

Hyper Light Drifter's soundtrack is a masterpiece!

I haven't seen anyone recommend Minecraft but I succinctly remember the very few times I was deep delving only to be met with the soundtrack

nomorebillboards@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 272d

Cave noises are fire, but ambience in general is sometimes pretty bad. You'll often hear happy/calm music while something intense is happening, and there are very few true ambient noises

Older ones, but Might & Magic 6 through 8 had amazing soundtracks. Especially the sixth one. I sometimes listen to them as a background music when working.

Mothra@mander.xyz · 2 pts · 268d

I searched this and hey some of the dungeon delving tracks were really good, thanks for the suggestion!

Subnautica has some super chill music. Until you meet a leviathan, or you crash your sub...

muse@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 272d

Noita has some nice psychadelic cave music

rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 271d

The Mines of Narshe music from Final Fantasy VI still comes to my mind whenever I'm wandering around someplace suitably grim.

For really old-school, the 1980s Commodore 64 game Trolls & Tribulations. Vaguely Metroidvania-esque in a medieval/dungeon/fantasy setting, but the music is Bach/Albignioni-adjacent baroque arranged for the SID chip.

Not quite from a game that I know of, but Dawn Of Tears - Blood on Verona

Skip to 11:43, this is one of the most beautiful audio tracks I've ever stumbled across, super underrated...

I like the demon door music that plays in Fable. Not really sure that counts as either (tho sometimes the demon doors lead to caves or maybe dungeons?)

I seem to remember the old RPG Fate had some decent dungeon music. I remember enjoying it and it not being repetitive when questing, although I was also like 10 so my opinion might not be that relevant.

mycatscool@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 272d

Diablo (the first one) has some of the best dungeon and game music ever made in my opinion

Chais@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 272d

Legend of Grimrock had a decent soundtrack IIRC.

Obi@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 271d

World of warcraft.

Sarothazrom@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 272d

Hollow Knight and its sequel, Silksong, have done of the best OST in history. Though those games can be, and are, the most beautiful headache inducers around.

Caves of Qud, specifically:

  • of Chrome, and How (Sultan's Song)

  • Substrate

  • Clam Dimension

Look up the guild wars 1 soundtrack. Same composer I believe.
