Oh no!

Look at these sponsors! I wouldn't use Ladybird in 1750 BC.

This is a silly take. It's an open source project from a non profit creating a new browser option

idegenszavak@sh.itjust.works · 128 pts · 250d (1 reply)

The joke is Ea nasir as copper sponsor: !reallyshittycopper@lemmy.world

It's just a ~4000 years old meme: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/complaint-tablet-to-ea-nasir

Greg@lemmy.ca · 56 pts · 250d

Swoosh šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø thank you

explodIng_lIme@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 250d (1 reply)

Yeah the other side of this is that there is mandatory 1 sponsor and it is Alphabet/Google

Edit: read the list and noticed the primeagen is on there so I guess it must be evil

pirateKaiser@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 250d

What did the primeagen do? Haven't been keeping up with his stuff for a while. I remember he gave me American Christian conservative vibes but I've never heard him taking political stances (outside of the prevalent pro capitalism typical for the region)

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 250d (6 replies)

Agreed. I looked into this and it seems like an honest effort to try and prevent a total Chrome monopoly.

A fresh browser is a massive project. Web standards are massive, and complex, and growing.

It would be nice to see Firefox killing it, but they aren’t.

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 14 pts · 250d (5 replies)

there's another non-fascist browser rendering project yknow, with less hype around it but just as promising imo

and also it's made in rust so you know it's good

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 250d (4 replies)

The very first text on that page:

Servo aims to empower developers with a lightweight, high-performance alternative for embedding web technologies in applications.

That’s not quite the same as a browser trying to support web standards.

Though I do want to see servo succeed too.

And why is ladybird fascist?

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 12 pts · 250d (3 replies)

devs are charlie kirk stans, and consider(ed, they seem to have changed course on this, good) gender neutral pronouns to be "too political"

Lumisal@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 250d (2 replies)

Great, find out they're supposedly not against gender neutral pronouns, only to know hear they're charlie Kirk stans. Source?

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 250d (1 reply)

admittedly "charlie kirk stan" was maybe not the best way to describe it (i got this from other people), he hasn't posted much about him (other than to mourn his death lol), but

apparently he thinks the software industry has a nazi-hating problem??? lmao

i’m still wary of him. he doesn’t have a big thing to point to like DHH, but the way he speaks and the people he associates with (including, you guessed it, DHH) raises a ton of red flags

Lumisal@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 250d

Yeah no, I'd rather stick with Firefox. We need another browser but not from a future fascist grifter.

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 44 pts · 250d (30 replies)

if something is sponsored by futo, shopify and 37signals???? run

i trust Ea-nāṣir more than i trust DHH

halvar@lemy.lol · 10 pts · 250d (29 replies)

update me is this part of the joke or is there some problem with futo im unaware of

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 26 pts · 250d (22 replies)

futo collaborates with and platforms curtis yarvin, a self-described fascist

they also did a bunch of other shady bullshit which the article talks about, but which i don't consider to be as important

y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 12 pts · 250d (15 replies)

Goddammit, now I have to find another keyboard for my phone. Any recommendations for one that isn't supported by fascists?

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 250d (4 replies)

i’ve switched to HeliBoard on my tablet!

i wouldn’t call it a drop-in replacement (i don’t think it has swipe-to-type or voice recognition for example, tho i could be wrong) but for me it works even better

Here is the extra thing:Ā https://github.com/Helium314/HeliBoard/wiki/8.-Advanced.

How do enable voice to text?

Deckname@discuss.tchncs.de · 4 pts · 250d

Thanks for the reminder, to try out Heliboard again!

y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 250d

just downloaded it and am trying it out now. the autocorrect already seems better lol

black0ut@pawb.social · 6 pts · 250d (2 replies)

I use Unexpected Keyboard.

It's mainly made for programming or using Termux, and it makes some special characters more accessible than the classic keyboards. It also has a mechanic for typing special characters that makes it faster to type. And you can enable a compose key, which is something I love to see on a phone keyboard.

Unexpected doesn't have voice recognition though, but it can be enabled by installing a voice recognition app alongside the keyboard.

owenfromcanada@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 250d

Thanks for posting this! I've been looking to switch away from Swiftkey since MS bought it, and I love the easily accessible symbols on this (I do a bit of terminalling on mobile).

y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 250d

I don't use the voice type thing anyhow. i get its usefulness, but I often don't like being perceived and speaking my texts aloud makes that difficult. looks like it does lots of other cool stuff though. does it do swipe to text? I like that a lot.

ETA: I looked at it and see the swipe to corner feature, which looks neat, but was referrering above to the ability to swipe through multiple letters to make a word.

AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 250d

I use florisboard, it doesnt have built-in voice support but you can use a seperate app for that and more unfortunately it doesnt have corrections and recommendations. They are working on implementing them but even without that its by far the most solid keyboard ive found.

Zos_Kia@lemmynsfw.com · 1 pts · 250d (4 replies)

You're getting astro turfed to hate a company that is actively fighting tech monopolies. Please take a minute to reflect on why this happens.

veggibles@lemmy.wtf · 8 pts · 250d (3 replies)

You're astroturfing to allow right wing influencers to be legitimatized socially. Please take a minute to reflect on why you are enabling Nazis.

Zos_Kia@lemmynsfw.com · -2 pts · 250d (2 replies)

You sound like a reasonable person, totally not internet brained, and I long for your approval.

y0kai@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 250d

and here we are, longing for your sage wisdom and approval...

Anyone who openly hosts or works with yarvin doesn't get my trust, business, or attention. None of the already established and successful projects futo claims to have given 'grants' to need futo's help, and I don't need futo.

sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 250d

Could someone fork the FUTO keyboard? Idk how this worksĀ

halvar@lemy.lol · 9 pts · 250d (1 reply)

curtis yarvin sounds like the name of a star wars imperial officer the nazis are getting out of control

veggibles@lemmy.wtf · 3 pts · 250d

Where were you during the Battle of Curtis Yarvin?

UltraBlack@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 250d (3 replies)

Can we stop giving a shit about stuff like this? Open source is arguably more important than a single peraon's political beliefs...

veggibles@lemmy.wtf · 9 pts · 250d (1 reply)

WTF!? "Can we just get over allowing and promoting Nazis into this bar? What's important is that the beer is free"

What a disgusting sentiment to see upvoted on Lemmy.

UltraBlack@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 249d

Futo is doing far too much good.

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 250d

as a trans woman i'd rather not promote and fund (indirectly, but still) the people who want people like me dead

i'd rather their white supremacy, misogyny and queerphobia not become the norm in open-source spaces, more than it already is...

SatyrSack@quokk.au · 8 pts · 250d (5 replies)

FUTO is seemingly lead by an entirely unrelated toxic individual. But as for 37signals:

The open source web application framework Ruby on Rails was initially created by David Heinemeier Hansson for internal use at 37signals, before being publicly released in 2004.

carotte@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 15 pts · 250d (4 replies)

for further context on DHH, CEO and founder of 37signals: he also made omarchy, the infamous dodgy-personal-arch-config-turned-linux-distro, is in large part the reason why framework is in so much hot water right now, and the reason he's bad (and why we're mad at framework for collaborating with him) is he's an open white supremacist

kilgore_trout@feddit.it · 3 pts · 250d (2 replies)

framework is in so much hot water right now

Most people don't care.
And honestly, I understand Framework's position. They collaborate with about a dozen other distros.

veggibles@lemmy.wtf · 5 pts · 250d (1 reply)

Except we do care, and we Framework is going to see this as we stop buying their products going forward.

kilgore_trout@feddit.it · 1 pts · 246d

Good for you if it works! I am not a fan of Omarchy either, I simply find the outrage overblown.

kazaika@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 250d

Damn thanks for explaining all that, i didnt know any of that

puppinstuff@lemmy.ca · 40 pts · 250d (2 replies)

Non-browser companies I don’t like are sponsoring a browser engine alternative so they don’t all end up getting hosed by Google’s lock-in.

As long as the end result is what I want I am alright with jerks I don’t like footing the bill if our separate self-interests are momentarily aligned.

This is a wait-and-see for me.

brucethemoose@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 250d

Yeah. Corporate sponsorship for the purposes of "get us the hell out of this monopoly" is kinda how open source has worked so far.

Sometimes its fine. See: Linux

daggermoon@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 249d

Thank you, an intelligent comment

optissima@lemmy.ml · 34 pts · 250d (1 reply)

sem@piefed.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 250d

Didn't he sell that dodgy copper way back when?

kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 25 pts · 250d

Damn, thats a really low quality copper sponsor

shiftymccool@piefed.ca · 25 pts · 250d (1 reply)

Yeah, as if finding FOSS alternatives to mega-corp software wasn't hard enough, now i have to care about the politics of a sponsor's co-sponsor's ceo's husband's dog's groomer before I install? Pass

zqps@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 250d

I think this is a joke about the first copper-tier sponsor.

Content not viewable in your region.

Could you provide an alternate link? Or maybe use the image button to upload it to your instance so it's out of the control of some corporation?

(Imgur deleted a bunch of content for the crime of not having a paid subscription, and they geoblock my country because the data protection commission threatened them with a fine for selling children's browsing history and they'd rather take it out on users than simply filter the accounts they auto-tagged as children out of the data they were selling. We left reddit for a reason. Imgur is no less moneygrabbing.)
