Okay great, now I'm down a rabbit hole about wombats with their double uteri, triple vaginas, and backwards pouches, because I looked up "wombat womb" ....
Idk about you but where I'm from the b is pronounced in womb. Same with comb. Its kinda just cut off though. So like buh without the uh. There's no b sound in consume.
It has to do with the word coming from French to English. There isn't a b sound in the French word. Sometimes, the weird spellings harken back to French loan words.
My guess is that English speakers spoke it with an accent and it eventually morphed into the modern English pronunciation
You and I certainly pronounce either "consume" or "womb" very differently if those words rhyme for you 😂 where are you from, out of curiosity? No judgement, just curious as I'm not sure I've ever heard an accent where those words rhyme!

I agree that this is an unpopular opinion.

Why would "comsomb" rhyme with "womb" and not "bomb?" "Consume" derives from Latin. Your opinion lacks basic understanding of etymology.

I want “womb” to rhyme with “bomb”

I want it to rhyme with comb. Comb should be spelled "come", and come should be spelled... well, you know.

I want bomb to rhyme with womb. Boom!

If it did then the word would sound like the noise it makes. I approve

Next you'll say that "fish" should be spelled "ghoti"

Checked your comment history out of curiosity and I see you’re in Australia! I’m in the US and the b sound is dropped in both words here
boletus@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 259d
Wild, I had no idea, I just assumed you were saying it with the b, never occurred to me that you guys just don't pronounce the b at all.
MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 259d
I was born and currently live in the US and pronounce the b in both words. I thought everyone did.
Live_your_lives@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 259d
I'm in the US as well and pronounce the b.

Do you presume to consume consommé with a spoon in a cwm. Asking for Theodor Geisel.

Agree.
Just switch both to either oo or uu, because US English speakers are confused by ö and ü.
Consoom / Woom
Consuum / Wuum
Drop the "ends with e or b changes the vowel sound, for some reason, sometimes" nonsense.
