I say, you're already in it now. May as well stick it out for the lords and ladies. Congratulations, you're now in control of 10 noble families, which probably include at least a few thousand square miles of land and a labor population in the 10s of thousands. Could be more depending on their ranks in the peerage system.
Children's carols aren't obliged to make any kind of sense, but I always imagined it as an aristocratic lady with a huge country manor getting lovebombed with outrageous gifts from her suitor, just because he can.
Endless birds is less annoying when you can be like:
claps hands "Sebastian, put these in the dovecote with the others, would you please?"

Oh, ok. Five golden rings. That's cool. Fine he can keep sending gifts...
Wait what? Six geese?! I knew I shouldn't have trusted him!
(Call it off soon or you end up with gift of milkers.)

I only leaned fairly recently that they are all birds with the 5 golden rings being some type of pheasant

Bro, it's 12 days full of fowl. It's birds all the way down. Like some seasonal 12 layer turducken.

Whole lotta food for a medieval peasant. Probably a decent amount even for a tradesman or farm.

I mean, you can eat the birds or their eggs. To someone living in the pre-19th century, that's a winning lottery ticket

Yet Another Partridge in a Pear Tree
It's all the letters back to the guy who's sending all the birds and it's brilliant

If you get over the minor hurdle of understanding icelandic you will understand how relevant and funny this is.

That partridge is a real menace, though..
bytesonbike@discuss.online · 2 pts · 265d
I don't think they were gifts.
They were daily threats.
