Don't be a fool, use the proper tool.

I made a meme.

The fun thing about this meme is that the film showed SGI's fsn file manager running on IRIX.

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 11 pts · 251d (1 reply)

IRIX is a discontinued operating system developed by Silicon Graphics (SGI) to run on the company's proprietary MIPS workstations and servers. It is based on UNIX System V with BSD extensions.

Close enough I'd say. After all, she didn't say "this is UNIX", she said "this is a UNIX system".

Which would have been pretty in keeping with Hammonds spared no expense but actually cheaper than f out especially book Hammond. We'll just use productions computers rather than paying the UNIX license

Looks more like a Linux. Unixers have a greater sense of cleanness.

psud@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 245d (2 replies)

I don't think you can tell a Linux from a Unix. Though in general unixes are tidier, there are Linux users with Unix style and habits that will break the style

tux0r@feddit.org · 1 pts · 244d (1 reply)

Which one?

psud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 243d

I'm not sure what you're asking which of. I might have not worded the last part of my comment unambiguously

To rewrite:

I don't think you can tell Linux from a Unix by looking at it reliably. Though in general unixes are tidier, there are Linux users that are just as tidy and keep their system just like a Unix one

Helix and Vim/NeoVim? Muscle memory is overrated anyways.

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 27 pts · 251d (4 replies)

He installed Helix last year and will try it out soon. Any day now...

TriangleSpecialist@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 251d (3 replies)

He'll try it right after he's done tweaking his NeoVim config so he can finally start doing some meaningful work in it.

This is the equivalent of a woodworker building jigs and other tools with their thousands-of-dollars of equipment.

Source: me. I do this. 😬

TriangleSpecialist@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 251d (1 reply)

Yeah, the feeling of "just needing that one perfect tool before I can do this" seems terribly common and I feel like it's being enabled quite a bit in our society. If I just had the right editor/keyboard/notepad/fountain pen/jig etc, then I'll be able to work on this other thing...

dohpaz42@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 251d

Oh god. That is so me. Always with the “if only” mentality. If only ________ then I could do ________.

And of course, it never gets done. 😅

Static_Rocket@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 251d

Legit thought it was just going to be a wall of text editors and nothing else

toynbee@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 251d (5 replies)

What is the source of this?

shalafi@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 251d (3 replies)

Gran Torino.

ns1@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 251d (1 reply)

For anyone considering watching: despite the name and this meme, not really a car movie. I enjoyed it (even if Clint singing over the closing credits is a bit much)

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 5 pts · 251d

I liked the movie when I saw it years ago but thinking about it know it is an incredibly self-masturbatory boomer fantasy.

Thanks!

But, but over 3 billion devices run Java!

psud@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 245d

I don't think you want to run on all of those devices. I think you probably only want to run on your machine and your other machine

CelestialMittens@feddit.org · 9 pts · 251d (1 reply)

He could replace all of that with just Emacs

DerArzt@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 250d

I'll just leave this here... https://youtu.be/urcL86UpqZc

stackoverflow: the one to bind them all

velindora@lemmy.cafe · 1 pts · 251d

I don’t know they were even around still. That’s cute, good for them.

termaxima@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 251d (2 replies)

You don't need this many editors x) Neovim for all your terminal needs, emacs evil mode when you need some actual UI in there like a notebook or R markdown !

Besides that, Java is never the right tool. It's always close enough but never quite right ; just like you can technically replace every single tool with a knife... But you shouldn't. (Except a knife does have a proper use, Java does not)

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 4 pts · 251d (1 reply)

So you're saying I should add Emacs there?

bitcrafter@programming.dev · 3 pts · 251d

Nah, presumably the developer already has an operating system and just needs a text editor.

Agrivar@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 251d (1 reply)

Why does it start with Men? Did you mean to put "man" there, or do you think only dudes collect tools?

ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net · 9 pts · 251d

Because my english no good :(

Fixed it, thanks.
