That's the least significant reason for beating Sam Altman to death.

galoisghost@aussie.zone · 61 pts · 238d

Once you’ve been searching on the internet for a fact, you’ll never stop wanting to beat every AI tech bro to death with your bare hands.

Why not both?

ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one · 10 pts · 238d (2 replies)

Why stop at both of them?

bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 238d (1 reply)

There's a quite sizeable list at the moment

We can tag team each other.

Elon Musk wanted to do this, but his mom said he couldn’t.

My friend bought what he thought was 16GB ddr5 for $50, but turned out to be 10 sets for $500. Now they're selling for about $250 each. Everything is insane!

You are now permanently banned from Reddit

Fedizen@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 237d

And the only reason you're not banned from X is because Altman and Musk are competing for the same tech messiah title.

But why not give in? Bottling up negative energy is not good for you.

Once you've been to Cambodia, you'll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands.

Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works · 41 pts · 238d (3 replies)

Damn, that's also true.

Fortunately Kissinger is dead!

Unfortunately, Altman is still alive.

ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one · 10 pts · 238d (1 reply)

Fortunately Kissinger is dead!

Someone really should go check on Kissinger to make sure he's dead. Kissinger gave me massive lich vibes.

Furbag@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 237d

frizzo@piefed.social · 1 pts · 238d

This is America best Altman twice once for him once for Henry

IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf · 1 pts · 238d

That's it. Hardly comparable with someone having to wait for the price of RAM to come down is it?

Bazell@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 238d (2 replies)

Why hurting your own hands if you can use tools to make beating more efficient?

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 13 pts · 238d

Henry Kissinger deserves that personal touch.

StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 238d

I'd rather cut Sam Altman's hands off and use them to beat him to death while screaming "stop hitting yourself, Sam! Stop hitting yourself!"

netweirdo@lemmy.zip · 10 pts · 238d (1 reply)

I bought a new laptop with 16 GB of DDR5 (8 GB soldered and 8 GB socketed) as it was super cheap for an 8840HS, and was planning to buy a 48 GB SODIMM for 120€ but held off on it for multiple reasons, thinking "it can wait and I can make do with less memory for now"

Yeah that 48 GB stick now costs 500€ which is just 50€ short of the entire laptop...

Tangent5280@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 237d

This too shall pass - we can hope that now there is both a massive revenue opportunity in the server market as well as an abandoned consumer market ripe for the taking, some enterprising manufacturer is going to look into filling this niche. Probably someone out of China, or maybe even India if they can get their shit together in time.

I mean I would still wanna do that even if it reduced costs to like $300 for a fully spec'd dream system.

Even if it cost me $300 per hit, if stop turn him into a vegetable. That'd be the best money ever spent.

wait until the bubble crashes and we have tons of ram in the pipeline with no dedicated buyers

HK65@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 236d (1 reply)

It's not even ECC, OpenAI bought up unfinished wafers that still need work to become proper RAM just so that others can't have it.

It will just not get made.

FFS Altman.

mechoman444@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 238d (3 replies)

Sam Altman has nothing to do with the current RAM shortage. Moreover, this is not the first RAM shortage. It also occurred during the earlier crypto-mining boom, and at that time no one was having public meltdowns trying to hunt down the inventor of Bitcoin.

The reason there is a RAM shortage is straightforward, the manufacturers that control the majority of production have chosen to sell primarily to a single industry because that is where the highest margins currently exist. From a financial standpoint, they have little incentive to sell to anyone else.

If you are looking for accountability, direct it at the large corporations that are deliberately allocating supply to maximize profit. They are the ones shaping the shortage, not individual tech executives.

Dogiedog64@lemmy.world · 41 pts · 238d (1 reply)

Now, who could be in charge of the company most well known for needing absurd amounts of RAM to make their product work?

Who goes around making hundred billion dollar deals to ensure their business has access to massive datacenters filled with GPUs that need 2000GB of RAM?

Whose company recently wanted to buy 40% of all RAM on the market, and got a letter of intent from major RAM producers who were willing to supply it, assuming they got paid?

Oh, right! SAM FUCKING ALTMAN! You're right that RAM producers are currently profit-maximizing openly and nakedly, but to call him blameless would be naive and just wrong. They wouldn't be doing so, at least not to this degree, had ChatGPT and LLMs not become the hottest new scam bubble tech industry through his actions.

mechoman444@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 237d

Sam Altman put in an order for RAM. A company is willing to supply it. That company is souly responsible for how they distribute their product. They could only supply them with a small portion of the order and be fair about it but they choose not too. 🤷

Yes Altman is not blameless but he's also not responsible.

Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 238d

There's also a hard drive shortage :-/

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · -9 pts · 238d (26 replies)

Normally, I think killing a CEO will cause no good because they're so replaceable, but I could make an exception and celebrate Sam's death.

At least until I have to look at 500 Tankie posts trying to convince western teens and facebook uncles to worship the killer.

Zwiebel@feddit.org · 19 pts · 238d (1 reply)

Disagree because they would behave differently if there was consequences

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 0 pts · 238d

Like when Brian Thompson was killed and his vice president took over the reigns within the hour? Like when they continued denying claims at record rates using AI? Fact of the matter is, somebody got rich off that guy dying, these sort of events won't make the rich less greedy, it will enable and embolden them so that only the most violent rise to the top.

jackr@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 238d (1 reply)

right, but have you considered that (targeted!) terrorism works?

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · -1 pts · 238d

No. Not one single time have I ever considered that.

Perhaps if it were a resistance to a fascist regime, but CEOs aren't a fascist regime they're just players in the game that voters have created.

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 238d (1 reply)

I don’t think it’s tankies doing that.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 2 pts · 238d

It's not only Tankies but I'd wager it's a majority Tankies. Anything to promote western violence and the loss of engagement in the political process.

Socialism_Everyday@reddthat.com · -2 pts · 238d (19 replies)

Tankie here. Marxists-Leninist don't condone stochastic violent acts during capitalism against Capitalists, the word we use to refer to such tactics is "adventurism", and it's criticized heavily.

Aljernon@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 238d (1 reply)

He's telling the truth for once. MLs don't believe that workers should have agency over their lives or the revolution. They only condone violence against capitalists if leadership ordered them to. They're very much a top down belief system hence the "Tankie" part: ie enforcing political orthodoxy with the threat of violence against the workers.

Socialism_Everyday@reddthat.com · -3 pts · 238d

They only condone violence against capitalists if leadership ordered them to

No. We just believe that adventurism isn't a good tactic in bourgeois dictatorship, and we distinguish it from repression of capitalists by the dictatorship of the proletariat, i.e. by the state democratically representing the workers in power.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · -1 pts · 238d (16 replies)

Then you don't support Russia, China, or North Korea and you're not a tankie, or you do support those entities and you're lying about their activities, in either scenario that's bullshit.

Aljernon@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 238d (11 replies)

You're not wrong that they support those countries but you haven't explained how that's pertinent to the topic at hand.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 2 pts · 238d (10 replies)

Because China, Russia, and North Korea run psyops that either directly or indirectly harm western nations, such as by endorsing, and in some cases funding and arming, people who oppose or disadvantage the governments and peoples in those nations in any way and by doing anything in their power to decrease credibility and trust of those nation's governments.

Examples: China used its TikTok military op not only to collect and categorize americans (and other nations) but to directly endorse Donald Trump for president, followed by the largest shift rightward in young voters ever recorded. China wants Anarchy in the west, China wants an opportunity to grow their own borders unchecked and become the dominant global superpower.

Aljernon@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 236d (9 replies)

China wants Anarchy in the west

Anarchy isn't a synonym for Chaos

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 0 pts · 236d (8 replies)

It is a synonym for a weakened governing body, though.

Aljernon@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 236d

Unless China is pushing for community gardens, and mutual aid drives in the West, lets try a different word.

Socialism_Everyday@reddthat.com · 0 pts · 238d (3 replies)

What do Russia, China or the DPRK have to do with stochastic acts of violence against capitalists?

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online · 1 pts · 238d (2 replies)

If you're a Tankie

You support Russia, China, and The Dictatorship of North Korea.

That's like the definition of the word.

Socialism_Everyday@reddthat.com · -3 pts · 238d (1 reply)

That's your definition. To me, it means essentially "Marxist-Leninist who supports actually existing socialist projects". I still fail to see what my views on some countries have to do with adventurism.
