The Senate will vote next week on a bipartisan war powers resolution to block Trump from continuing military against Venezuela — a vote that takes on heightened importance after U.S. forces attacked the South American nation and arrested President Nicolás Maduro early Saturday.
The resolution to block the administration from engaging in further hostilities against Venezuela is privileged, which means Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) cannot stop it from coming to the floor.
The measure is sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

Next week??
Finish your weekend in the Hamptons why don't you, you fucking slackers.
How about an emergency session in the House? Like RIGHT NOW? Trump just attacked another country: do your fucking job!

It's the United States of America. You've got to set appropriate expectations. The last time the USA launched a series of illegal wars they did it with broad bipartisan support.

It's the Republicans' job to do fascism. It's the Democrats' job to lose elections and offer minimal resistance against the Republicans' agenda. This is what they've been paid to do; the Republicans started with Reagan, the Democrats started with Clinton.
Since then, it's become not only legal, but incentivized, for them to represent corporate interests over voters' interests.

While they should be doing anything they can to stop this shit, this whole vote is purely symbolic. Unless they can get support from the house and a supermajority in the senate, no standalone bill will do anything.
The only real leverage they have is a potential government shut down at the end of the month. Given how unpopular a repeat of Iraq and Afghanistan would be, I want to say that it should be fairly easy to find bipartisan support for a deal that would pull any forces out of Venezuala and potentially put some road blocks in place to dissuade further military interventions. You'd just need some competent leadership and a little bit of backbone.

Makeitstop@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 233d
In some states you have to be registered as a member of a party to vote in their primaries. In states with open primaries you can vote in primaries without registering as a party member, but they still typically have party affiliation as an option on the form.

Right now it’s a coin flip as to whether I’ll see that within the remainder of my lifetime.
peopleproblems@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 233d
You definitely SHOULD treat the US as a serious entity. When the government is controlled by psychopaths, it doesn't matter what they intend to abide by. It means that they will use the weapons at their disposal when they so choose.
nonentity@sh.itjust.works · -1 pts · 232d
Absolutely FUCK that. Treating psychopathic bullies as serious entities is appeasement, and provides them vacuous credibility.
The US has been on the losing side of every armed conflict they’ve been involved in for over 80 years, the clowns they’ve currently placed in charge believe that streak is double.
Distance should be applied until shit settles down, isolation if that fails, and ridicule until the populous matures enough to elect representation worthy of respect for once.
peopleproblems@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 232d
I'm not sure what you're definition of a "serious entity" is, but just because the US military has done nothing but fuck up war since Vietnam doesnt make the US non-serious.
Appeasement has nothing to do with it. All of the world's countries need to take the threat of the US seriously. Isolation and ridicule is what the regime wants anyway. If you infuriate the population against you, suddenly the military grows in numbers.
Tehbaz@lemmy.wtf · 1 pts · 233d

If they wait until it's over, then they don't have to look powerless when Trump ignores Congress.
SulaymanF@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 233d
Here’s the problem as I see it. Trump, Hegseth, and Rubio are deeply overconfident. Trump’s former ambassador was telling BBC that Venezuela is much easier than Iraq. Trump fell into the same mistake as Bush did of thinking the president is unpopular and that the outside opposition is all set to swoop in and replace the government and give Trump everything he wants in oil. This is too tantalizing. The problem is that the new government is not stable, patriots and nationalists and pro-Maduro pro-army forces will resist and fight a foreign occupation. Trump thought he could skirt the problems of Iraq by doing only airstrikes and wrapping up the whole conflict in less than 60 days (so that Congress can be cut out of the whole thing).
Rebels can sabotage the oil lines, that means the need for troops to protect the oil. That will go longer than the 60 day limit; so either Trump will have to find another military or ask Congress for authorization. Trump will likely force Congress to go along; Republicans are too scared to cross Trump and Democrats are afraid of being labeled unpatriotic for not going along with it. The fact is that Dem leaders are being silent on this. The only good take I’ve seen is Graham Platner issuing a statement about how illegal this whole thing is, not defending Maduro or sounding unpatriotic.
Long story short, Congress will meekly go along with Trump’s war as a fait accompli. Nobody wants to be painted as anti-troops or pro-drugs or whatever Republicans will smear them as.
