PhoenixDog@lemmy.world · 74 pts · 220d
Ford is complying with dear leader while dear leader is actively fucking Ford by cutting trade with Canada.
I used to work in automotive manufacturing. The amount of parts to build cars cannot come from just America. It's impossible.
Trump is beating the shit out of Ford and they're just standing there asking for more.
Sludgeyy@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 220d
Parts yes. Cars no.
It is in Ford's best interest to keep other forgien cars out of the US. If Americans were really free to shop forgien cars the US car companies would all go under.
Trump will keep out "bad forgien cars"
Tairiffs are just a cost they pass down to consumers when there are no other options for the consumer other than domestic cars built with tariffed parts.
They know what they are doing.
rbos@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 220d
Silver lining though, cars will get more expensive, which might spur more public transit. Heh... at the very least it will make walkable places a little more desirable.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 220d
Oh cars will get more expensive, but you think America will lean towards public transit? Auto manufacturers will just bitch and moan about how they can't sell their $145,000 entry level sedan, and the government will just bail them out with your tax money.
What, you don't want to pay $1500 a month for a Ford Focus?
eletes@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 220d
Ford would bitch and moan so American safety regulations would be cut back to help lower costs of cars
Soup@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 220d
Ford doesn’t sell the Focus anymore because the US hates reasonably sized vehicles.
moakley@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 220d
If people can't afford cars, they'll just create subsidies using middle class tax money.
rbos@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 220d
I'm hoping this means we'll actually get a high speed rail line from Toronto to Quebec City sometime this century instead of just having another shelved study.
hector@lemmy.today · -2 pts · 220d
That is total bullshit they could build all the parts in the country, preposterous to claim otherwise. The president is a piece of shit, and will ruin ford, but the parts could easily all be made in america, and were all made in america, probably in living memory.
Now everyone is defending neo liberalism because the president co opted anger at so called free trade.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 220d
So where is America getting a lot of their foreign special metals? Last I checked a lot of particular components needed to build modern vehicles literally don't exist in America.
If you wanted to build just a car from 1968, absolutely you could. But the technology in cars now-a-days comes from materials that literally do not exist in the continental USA. You need to import them. And Canada has a lot of it. So even the suggestion that you don't need Canada is not only ignorant as hell but completely stupid.
hector@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 220d
The US actually has about every metal or mineral you could want somewhere, as rissia and china both do, canada to a lesser extent. The us used to lead in rare earth stuff too. Not sure about cobalt and coltan but it likely does exist in the us.
Not that we should process all of them here neccessarily. Just that we have deposits of basically everything.
I do not think we should have tarrifs on canada or europe. But our cars could be made in the us, and used to be before nafta. Made in measures parts though, raw materials are not included in those.
Canada is not the problem in free trade. Their only advantage is not unfair, they do not gouge on healthcare forcing companies to pay more for less to pay an army of parasites offering no value to health care.
Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 220d
It would not be hard to rebuild that technology with the wealth or nation has. It is a choice, and was intentionally made that way, and pretending otherwise is to take at face value the narrative the rich weave
hector@lemmy.today · -1 pts · 220d
Who said anything about the Raw materials? That is not how made in labels work and you know it. You are throwing around a little gratuitous insults despite you being the one that was despite you being the one that was wrong.
But we could do all the raw materials in the United States as a matter of fact. Ford had a completely vertical operation and produced almost everything in the United States. But I do not know why I'm talking to somebody that called me stupid for challenging his falsehood.
PhoenixDog@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 220d
The fact you even think that I called you stupid, rather than the President of the United States stupid, says all I need to know about you. Have a great day.
Madison420@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 220d
No they weren't, not since like 1950.
hector@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 220d
First of all, 1950 is in living memory as I said. Second of all, I dispute that any significant percent was built outside the country before nafta, and I flat out reject that we couldn't build them all here.
Just because the president co-opted union issues to win the election, planning on doing the exact opposite of what he promised, does not mean you should embrace the opposite and the neo liberal fair trade arguments whereby our labor and environmental standards are undercut by sending jobs to countries without those protections in a race to the bottom. Eliminating those jobs that led to selling their own products in a cycle of economic decline. Canada is not a problem in that regard, although they have an advantage it's not unfair, because national health insurance.

While at work you are representing the company and have to act accordingly. Aside from any personal feelings about what he said, what he did is really unprofessional and could cause reputational damage to the company.
I agree with what he said but yelling that at work during a visit is just not a great idea.
TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com · 6 pts · 220d
That dude was representing his union not Ford Motor Company.
Just because some company says "you are representing FORD" ... the CEO of Ford doesn't drive a Ford ... is he get a pass because he is rich ?
You don't represent a company. You represent yourself.
morriscox@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 220d
An employee on the work clock? Of course he is representing the company. If I see someone and they have a uniform then they are representing their company. They might be representing themself as well (personal reputation) but they are also representing their employer and their actions reflect on the company.
I think Trump is a piece of shit but you are in the wrong in this regard.
jj4211@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 220d

Saapas@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 220d

hector@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 220d
This is not like representing the company at a picnic or charity event. This is PR for the aspiring fascist dictator, who is leaving us with a legacy of a soon to be supreme leaders fixing elections and ruling in a reign of terror scapegoating others for problems. Also one that fucked children with epstein and let himself get caught on tape doing it so now a foreign intelligence agency (israel,) has proof that would ruin him making him at their disposal. Also a lifelong blackmailer himself, such an enigma, a child fucking blackmailing enigma.
Fuck the company and their stroking off the guy betraying the country that allowed ford to become great. They are fools to trust the party, and will be destroyed by them, because they and their ilk were trying to prevent a little reform to restore the glory of the republic to the post war years.
Saapas@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 220d
I'm all for the sentiment, I just tried to explain what sort of stance the company is working from and why being suspended or fired wouldn't be surprising.
hector@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 220d
Oh yeah the president and his people are think skinned to say the least. They would have the guy executed if they could. The company would be looking at transparent penalties if they didn't fire the guy.
They should reinstate him with his union though, idk how it works in auto, but other unions will get guys reinstated with back pay for being fired contrary to the contract.
I would not be surprised if they didn't try and investigate the guy with federal prosecutors, but we are not quite there yet where those prosecutions would make it to trial.

OshagHennessey@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 220d
Geico fired R. Lee Ermey because he gave a speech claiming Obama was bankrupting the country on purpose so he could bring socialism to the US. Just saying.
chiliedogg@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 220d
I truly don't understand that line of reasoning. At all.
Putting aside ideological stances on economic and social structures, how does someone reason that the country being broke makes socialism more achievable?
OshagHennessey@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 220d
If I can remember correctly (and I probably can't) I think they figured Obama would cause mass unrest, bankrupt the country with insane economic policies, then use that as excuse to implement martial law, then use that to pass a law that says we do socialism now.
I'm pretty sure I remember that rhetoric going around during Biden too.
0x0@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 219d

chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 16 pts · 220d
While I agree with the sentiment, there's always 1 person who says something really racist or something and does get into trouble, but usually gets a bunch of right wing support too.
Edit: Google search mentions several, including Ferguson police officer being extremely racist, a teacher also being racist calling Michelle a gorilla, a NY police officer got a mere 60 days for a slur and suggesting the president "go die in a shallow grave."
The overall point stands that they did way worse than someone calling out the truth, but right wing defenders will definitely say it happened with Obama too.

A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 220d
He wasnt just a fuckin open Nazi, Hitler practically wrote him a goddamn Love Letter in Mein Kampf.
Ford also financially supported the Nazi Party in its early days
Also received the highest medal and honors that could be bestowed to a foreigner, from Nazi Germany.
Then, in 1942, when such things started reflecting badly on him, he suddenly went "oh no no no, Thats not me, I hope this whole business ends with world peace and love amongst everyone"
He is a national fuckin disgrace.
ricecake@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 220d
It's slightly more complicated than that. Still doesn't make him look good but it's more nuanced.
He was a Nazi and flagrant racist before Nazi was the unequivocally negative descriptor we think of it as today.
He thought Nazism was right for America the same way he thought square dancing would keep away the blacks and that the Jews would be undercut if he did car financing without banks.
He was awful and a patriot, so when Germany went to war with America he was unequivocally in favor of destroying the Germans.
He still agreed with them on everything else.
ScrambledEggs@lazysoci.al · 37 pts · 220d
Ford already sucked. Since I'm in the market for a new vehicle Ford was already off the table. This doesn't change much but supports my claim.
GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 220d
I had the misfortune of renting a couple cars recently.
As a renter Toyota still required me to set up an account to do anything besides basically radio on the central console. Certainly no maps or phone connections.
Ford gave full functionality, but would block one of the info screens if the seat belt was unbuckled, even if you were parked. Want to see your average efficiency at the end of a trip? Make sure your buckled in for that info. Make sure your passengers are, too. This vehicle didn't seem to have a built-in map, which seems dumb, but the phone could be connected and I suppose android auto would pass the info across. I didn't need the functionality that much, and after a couple days the phone connection went crazy and started connecting and disconnecting so I removed my phone from the list.
Neither car was impressing me too much on the entertainment functionality and if it was my vehicle I may have put in the effort to resolve these, but not for something I was only using for a few days. From the performance side, I was happier with the Toyota Corolla. Part of that is I prefer sedans and the free upgrade to the Ford Escape wasn't something I really wanted (not the poorer fuel efficiency, either).
So yeah, Ford sucks.

The story of the emperor with no clothes has a very optimistic view of society because in real life the boy who shouted out that he had no clothes would be beaten with a stick.

I too take offense at that, the president is a pedophile himself, while also a pedophile protecter, it's his wonderful secret. Such an enigma, a child fucking enigma that israel has tapes of fucking children.

If I got to piss off that orange rapist you could suspend me too. Heck, I'm a straight man, but you could sodomize me with a pineapple in exchange for getting a solid punch in his face.

Not sure I know of any queer people with this specific kink either you know
BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 219d
Yeah, I think the thought went on sort of a little walk there. It started out by just getting good ol' regular sodomized, but then the thought stumbled over "I guess getting a dick in my output port isn't bad enough, to convey the intensity of my desire for punching the dude in his stupid lying face" thus we end up with me getting a pineapple up my rectum.
But then again we shouldn't rule anything out, rule 34 and all

I'm fine waiting for 4 years to pick up whatever is left of our society if Congress doesn't have the balls to impeach this guy back to ruzzia, but I want to see legislation introduced to specifically ban anyone who is a racist asshole from ever taking office at any level in our government. What is happening is not acceptable.

As someone who's neck is potentially on the chopping block in the regime, can we not with the "these Nazis are so gonna get it in 4 years" shit? It absolutely screams "this doesn't effect me but I want the other liberals to know it upsets me a little bit"

Agreed. This Saturday is gonna be a big one of protesting.

“He has no regrets whatsoever”, is this a quote from the employee, or from Trump about being a pedophilic predator?

Yes.

If I get fired for expressing my state of mind being less effective because my friends and clients are not white US natural born citizens, so be it. Yeah, it's fucking stressful. But I will not be silent when people are being sent to concentration camps, citizens are being murdered, and a PMC is profiting off each kidnapping.
I won't debate it. I won't call a coworker a Nazi fuck to their face. But I will not be silenced when this horrifying shit is going on.
I have privilege as a WASP. Yes it's a risk. Yes I have family.
But I will not be silent.

You have the right to protest, good for him
Saapas@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 220d
Do you have right to protect during work, while at work and does that right safeguard you from any repercussions (suspension, firing) from your employer? Certain labour action stuff is protected in Finland but no idea about the US.
ABetterTomorrow@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 220d
It varies depending on the company. I can at my current job but I’m sure at most big to major corporations, likely not.
Saapas@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 220d
Does that come from some agreement with the company or the law?
ABetterTomorrow@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 220d
That also depends. Either my company it’s in an agreement and company policy that you sign to follow. Like dress causal, don’t speak bad about the company on social media. Recent news about this guy, he’s in a union. He has more protection than your average worker.
MuskyMelon@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 219d
But he was wrong. Trump IS the PedOTUS, not just the protector.
