Steam is big in there too. It makes sense for both companies because they make their money from content.
If an animation or game development team/studio can produce better quality content, cheaper and faster, that just means more money for the company providing access to said content.
I have a conflicted view of Netflix. They're a classic big American corporation and come with all the bullshit that entails, but at the same time they do occasionally do some cool things.
Like releasing queer content despite the backlash from the right. They released that "gay boot camp" series recently and it absolutely enraged right wing bigots. This thing with blender is another example.
I am very nervous about their Warner Brothers purchase and am hoping they prove to be responsible owners of all those IP's. It seems quite unlikely, though. There are so few American corporations who aren't shitty.
Did they loose money releasing that content? While they are at a pinnacle right now politically, right wing fascist bigots still are not a true majority. Netflix know their audience really really well (they are watching you). I bet they can typically laser predict viewership within 50k views or so. In the privacy of their own home many anti gay projectionist asswipes are watching gay stuff anyway too.
Netflix may be the last one of the big tech corpos that still has some people that care in positions of influence as it's newer than the others and their business model isn't outright spying on their users.
Unfortunately it won't last forever. People burn out. Corporations burn them out.
If all the other top level donators haven't done that by now I don't think there's much to worry about. And if they had plans to, I think they would have to face off against the other top level donators. So it wouldn't be that easy either.
Does this give them any actual control over Blender development or is it just one of many groups saying "We like what you're doing, keep at it"?
Not saying there isn't the possibility of pressure because "If you don't do what we want, we'll pull our funding"... but again, if they're just one of many patrons at that level (amongst many at a smaller level) so that's not necessarily going to make that big a difference.
Well, those donating time and resources often get extra consideration. But Ton has been fiercely independent for decades. And even though he's stepped down from his leadership role. I think the board he helped put in place has things in good hands. They, KDE etc have forged their own path and shown the viability of their models. They'd be fools to abandon that or relinquish control after 30 years.
Tons have come and gone with little fan fair. Blender OTOH has quietly made inroads into industry and the hearts of many many people. I have used blender since the mid 90s. Where it is today compared to back then is unimaginable. I can't wait to have my mind blown by where they go in the future. Nodes and simulation are really shaping up. Who knows, between them and the love the NLE editor has been getting. Adobe, Houdini, and even Nuke might get some competition.
I don't see how that would be possible ? Blender is a foundation, not a company (although there's also a company, but.... that's another story) and the code is licensed with GPLv2... you'd have to have ALL contributors from the very beginning (=thousands of people, including the ones who passed away) to agree unanimously to a license change.
Blender is safe.
There have several reports recently of Netflix pressuring writers/directors/producers to create shows and movies tailored to distracted consumers. Basically, telling them to repeat plot points in dialog so that people ‘watching’ while doing other things can keep up.
I’d put that in the evil category along with advertising and media company consolidation.
I could accept that for the all the slop they produce as long as it would prevent stuff like Santa Clarita Diet from being cancelled, especially on a cliffhanger, basically do that attention grabbing, repeating shit for the mass audience and then use the money it generates to fund the more niche and high quality projects
Maybe they should give them extra money and resources so they can produce two versions: normal, and background mode with reiteration littered through it.
I was a subscriber from DVD rentals up until they blocked password sharing and raised their prices for the umpteenth time. They're not Amazon bad, but they're dead to me. They will never see another penny from me.
I would be quite tempted if (someone else) was offering DVD and game rentals by mail.
Honestly I just wish there was a place like Scarecrow Video in the UK. It's pretty much the one thing I don't get here compared to Seattle. I'm even getting the same weather.
Someone do any CAD. I’m pretty surprised at how shitty the free cad options are. I just use it for 3d printing. Fusion360 (free) is the only decent product out there.
But compared to Fusion360, it’s archaic—borderline unusable imo.
What I really want to use is Shapr3D, but there’s no way I’m paying $40/m for the pleasure of making a model or two a month.
Plasticity looked promising, and I was willing to drop the parametric in a pinch, but I had trouble with getting the size right because it’s scale-agnostic.
I tried using freecad a while back
my previous experience being two years in blender and light designs in fusion360 that i picked up very quickly
designing a very simple shape that would've taken me a minute on blender or fusion, took me a good 20-30 minutes navigating errors and ui to find simple tools like extend, even after being found, making them work is an extra hassle
I would love to use freecad but its not worth the learning curve for me when i only design basic things to 3d print

People have been begging for big tech companies that rely on open source software to support development. Netflix finally did the dang thing.
More, please!

They constantly do, it's just for less flashy stuff like drivers or kernels so no one cares.

I had to read it three times, I couldn't comprehend Netflix doing something good.

That was a financial decision honestly. Else they would have dropped Chapelle.
It's good that they aren't activities hostile, but my bar is higher.

As a Batman fan, it just occurred to me that I really hope Netflix won't ruin the IP if they get the chance to buy WB.

They also recently reversed their cheapest tier restrictions. Now it can be ran from 2 devices, 5 profiles, 1080p and downloads.

Careful about the g word mate. Sometimes interests temporarily overlap, but "doing good" is pretty unlikely

Whoever inside of Netflix pushed for this, you're fighting the good fight!

Oh hell no, Netflix better not be trying to EEE Blender or be trying to buy them out.
