Two countries [US & Israel] booed at Olympics opening ceremony despite stern warning

US Vice President JD Vance endured a chorus of “boos” as US athletes began their march at the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, after Israeli athletes faced the same unwarm welcome.

"Stern warning".

Booo! Oh wait, you're serious, let me boo even harder.

BOOOOOOOOO!

“Why won’t the stern warning stop the booing? It will surely stop the fascists.”

dellish@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 197d

Perhaps they should try a strongly worded letter next time? I hear that does wonders.

nkat2112@sh.itjust.works · 82 pts · 197d

If greet we must, then this is how we must greet Nazis and Zionists.

It doesn't make up for genocide and attacking immigrants, but at least the war criminals' loss of narrative is out in the open.

Who the fuck thinks a stern warning will prevent fans and visitors from booing evil scumbags. The IOC are out of touch, out of date and out of ideas

That makes sense. All the videos I’ve seen the booing seemed very quiet. Of course those fuckers would edit it out.

"Stern warning" hahaha

echodot@feddit.uk · 25 pts · 197d (1 reply)

The the international Olympics committee is an absolute joke. They claim they don't want to be political and that's why Israel is allowed to compete and expect not to get backlash.

They have to be taking bribes, that's the only reason they would be making these otherwise insane decisions.

Every israeli athletes should be investigated to see if they served in the battlefield killing innocent palestinians

Bloomcole@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 197d

Western countries are complicit.
They might do it but then it's just to mislead the population.
One case I know where they started the investigation after the scum had already left the country.

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 33 pts · 197d (4 replies)

Didn’t boo the athletes, just Vance.

I'm surprised they are even in it, given that they aren't exactly known for their "wintry" climate. I guess it's like the Jamaican bobsledding team.

ramenshaman@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 197d (6 replies)

Going to watch the opening ceremony when I get home. I'm glad that it sounds like the boos were directed at JD Vance instead of the athletes. Fuck that guy. I don't know what he expected to happen. That would suck to be training to be a top-tier athlete and your country does something shitty and you get boo'd for it.

lividweasel@lemmy.world · 39 pts · 197d (4 replies)

I’m watching it on delay right now, and they just came in. The athletes got a great cheer, but that quickly switched to boos when they showed him. It was perfectly done.

agingelderly@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 197d (3 replies)

I watched some but not the entire thing. Did other countries leaders get shown while their athletes walked out our just Vance during the USA? None of what I watched showed other leaders. Maybe they weren't there? I don't know

veroxii@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 197d (2 replies)

It depends on their recognition status I guess. They showed princess Anne I think when Great Britain entered. And a few others.

EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com · 15 pts · 196d (3 replies)

It's not like we can actually do anything about them. Booing at least makes us feel good for a brief moment.

People are allowed to vent, and it is healthy to do so.

Artisian@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 194d (2 replies)

If you've ever been booed, I'm not sure this take would feel great.

I support making Vance feel unwelcome (and that was indeed the target, not team USA). I'm less enthused about the athletes being targeted. The optics of 'we shame all associated to things we dislike' is aspect conservative voters claim to fear/dislike from progressives.

EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com · 1 pts · 194d (1 reply)

I'll have more sympathy if they publicly make statements condemning the genocide that their country is committing. Until then, sucks to suck. They are not the victims here.

The optics of ‘we shame all associated to things we dislike’

"Dislike" is way underselling this. I "dislike" pineapple on pizza. This is something rather different.

Artisian@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 193d

Do tell: do you check if they have before you boo?

I know I haven't. And the few times I've checked, it has always been more of an edge case than expected.

So? They are still allowed to participate.
And none of the EU or other vassal states will do anything against them, despite what the population wants or thinks.

chiliedogg@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 196d

I think they should treat US athletes like the did clean Russian athletes.

Allow them to compete, but not as representatives of the US.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 6 pts · 197d (7 replies)

I actually had not realized that. fine to me if the ban hammer swings this way to but maybe let the athletes compete for other countries.

deacon@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 197d (1 reply)

They usually let them compete under the Olympic flag I believe

GreatWhite_Shark_EarthAndBeingsRightsPerson@piefed.social · 1 pts · 196d

That what must happen to Israeli & USA & EU & Ukraine & Russia athletes, that have not been soldiers. Of course since it is mandatory in Israel, there might not be any athletes from Israel competing.

DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com · 7 pts · 197d

They weren't banned for the Ukraine thing, but for doping. There are Russian athletes that compete under ROC in Olympics now.

Edit-well, looks like I was wrong. The ban was rescinded in '22, than there were banned again for the Ukraine invasion. And now some athletes compete under AIN, Athletes from Individual Neutral Athletes

GreatWhite_Shark_EarthAndBeingsRightsPerson@piefed.social · 1 pts · 196d

WOW, that is surprising, been going for so long & so much public attention.

wheezy@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 197d (2 replies)

I just installed Brave back in the day when it was one of the only mobile browsers with built in adblock. Still works fine and never have to fuck with lists. So I've just left it as default for external links. I don't do much article reading on mobile unless Lemmy links me somewhere so have never bothered to change. I'm sure there are better options though.

edible_funk@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 196d (1 reply)

Brave tracks you, and then there's the whole crypto thing.

wheezy@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 196d

Yeah. I don't do anything on my phone that I don't assume is tracked. It's a good rule to live by. False sense of privacy in things like Signal or otherwise are just that. If you can visually see the text or images on your phone assume it's going to Palantir. If you have a burner phone. It's associated with you if you so much as bring it near your personal phone.

Being paranoid and assuming everything digital is watched is the only real security you can have.

uBlock Origin's element picker allows you to remove that swipe for next article thing permanently. Just tested it and could properly read the article without that trash blocking my screen.
