It seems like you and others mostly answered your own question, but another aspect is that often paying with $100 bills raises an eyebrow and comes under more scrutiny - after all, the shop is out $100 if they accept a bad one. People are much more likely to carry and pay with $20 bills, so it's significantly (I would guess more than 5x) easier to pass a few bad ones off here and there. I think gas stations used to be a common way to work counterfeit bills into circulation, as are retail shops, both of which are going to be less diligent than banks.
How easy / intuitive is it to do on mobile (specifically iOS)? I've wanted to start for a while but the fear of making a mess and more work for volunteers has kept me from it so far.
It's important to remember that banks hand out vice president titles like business cards. It makes the vice president feel important and gives customers someone with a splashy title to yell at.
Granted, I've never looked or even considered that something like this might exist, but I had no idea they existed until today. It looks like the one you linked is a fixed 12V, and others have linked other options that can be programmed for different voltages.
