Tron: Ares was not that bad either. The visuals were a clear upgrade from Tron: Legacy and a handful of clips I've seen from the original Tron movie. You can notice that that they put a lot of details in places like Ares' HUD, consoles, the proprietary 3D printer and the virtual red-coloured world whose name I can't remember right now.
The soundtrack does complement the movie, although I noticed that they repeated certain "melodies" across the movie more than I would've liked. It's obviously not at par with Daft Punk but it resembles the spirit of the Tron franchise.
The plot is a real rollercoaster in terms of quality and believability. The backstory and plot of the main protagonists feel solid and so is the interaction between each other. Somehow Jared Leto decently fits the role of Ares and his dialogues don't feel out of place or cringey. On the other hand, the story gives too much power to the antagonist to the point that it clearly feels unfair. Also some action scenes feel like they're happening just because they have to, and probably give material for the trailers to give the viewers something to look forward to while watching the movie.
If you have no qualms with the involvement of Jared Leto, I would recommend that you give this movie a try. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it's surprisingly well made for a movie that that considered a flop by the users at Lemmy.

Chester Bennington from Linkin Park, Wayne Static from Static-X, David Draiman from Disturbed, and Jay Gordon from Orgy. If you were a nuMetal fan back then, this was an all-star lineup.
Also, honorable mention to Batman & Robin for being absolute dogshit but having one of the Smashing Pumpkins' best songs on it.

There was a YouTube criticism of Marvel Super Hero movies that was basically going around asking people to hum themes from favorite movies, almost always John Williams: Star Wars, Jurassaic Park, Indiana Jones... then heÂŽd ask people to sing people from a Marvel movie, ANY Marvel movie, and people who just mumble incoherently that they couldn't think of anything. All those characters, all those movies, and not a single damn theme identifiable with any of character or movie, just a bunch of music generically recycled for Action or Sad or Bemused. Biggest missed opportunity in music history.
There's also some good commentary about how themes that had definite meanings in the original trilogy got recycled and reused until they meant nothing specific. I think Luke's theme in the swamp became Generic Music for Using the Force.

Pacific Rim theme song lives rent free in my head. An amazing movie. Also came out around the time I started paying attention to directors so it's my "first" Del Toro movie and I have watched everything he's made since.
I don't remember any of the music from Arrival so I guess it's time for a rewatch.
Fun fact! Arrival used On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter to such powerful effect that it cost them a shot at the Oscar for Best Original Score. The Academy determined that this non-original-to-the-film piece of music had too much of an emotional impact and would cloud judgement of the actual original score, so the film wasnât nominated in the category.
(That song is so beautiful. It gets used all the time in media because it so perfectly encompasses the feeling of hope in the face of despair. It was one of the first songs I listened to after the 2024 US election to try to make myself less catatonic.)
Fair enough, the visuals are also really top tier. IMO the most stunning parts are just where they filmed it (New Zealand?) tho, so I donât see them as being quite as specific to these movies as the music is
Yeah, New Zealand really is a magical place. Pretty cool they had all those old civilizations to film in. They must have done a lot of work getting Minas Tirith camera-ready after all those years. And it was especially cool of them to hire an indigenous Balrog instead of just setting a European actor on fire the way most movies do.

The bits of the movies that make me stop and say âwowâ are mostly just the mountain shots as the fellowship hikes and the green hills around the shire. Nothing against the rest of the visuals (like you mentioned, the cities were done really well), Iâm just much more interested by nature personally
For me, the nature moments don't have too many musical tie ins with the exceptions of the herogasm helicopter shot for the full fellowship theme shortly after leaving Rivendell.
When I listen to the soundtrack I see Minas Morgul, and Weathertop, and Khazad-Dhum, the Argonath, the caverns below Khazad-Dhum....
The synergy goes so far beyond the music & the visuals. Every person working on those films poured their hearts and souls into it; it had to be a childhood dream to be able to realize that world.
Interesting the divide here between who think soundtrack is orchestral music composed for the movie and others who think its a bunch of pop songs the director liked.
I think part of the issue is that fewer movies and tv shows use licensed music anymore so most music in movies its just the score now. I blame it on streaming as it eats into profits, as can be seen by things like scrubs reruns not using the original music from the episodes.
1492: Conquest of Paradise. Very few people remember the movie (I still do and rewatch it regularly), but the soundtrack by Vangelis is an absolute banger.
In general, his soundtracks tend to be better than the movies. Alexander is another great example. Chariots of Fire and Bounty are fine movies, but still greatly enhanced by his soundtracks. Perhaps the only movie that stood on its own against a soundtrack by Vangelis was Blade Runner.
Note that this is a playlist of uploads from different users rather than an official soundtrack. I couldn't find one on Youtube Music and don't know if one exists.
The last temptation of Christ, by Martin Scorsese with Willem Defoe. Soundtrack by Peter Gabriel. The movie is good, the soundtrack "Passion" is way better.

Pacific Rim theme song lives rent free in my head. An amazing movie. Also came out around the time I started paying attention to directors so it's my "first" Del Toro movie and I have watched everything he's made since.
I don't remember any of the music from Arrival so I guess it's time for a rewatch.

Fun fact! Arrival used On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter to such powerful effect that it cost them a shot at the Oscar for Best Original Score. The Academy determined that this non-original-to-the-film piece of music had too much of an emotional impact and would cloud judgement of the actual original score, so the film wasnât nominated in the category.
(That song is so beautiful. It gets used all the time in media because it so perfectly encompasses the feeling of hope in the face of despair. It was one of the first songs I listened to after the 2024 US election to try to make myself less catatonic.)

Fair enough, the visuals are also really top tier. IMO the most stunning parts are just where they filmed it (New Zealand?) tho, so I donât see them as being quite as specific to these movies as the music is

Yeah, New Zealand really is a magical place. Pretty cool they had all those old civilizations to film in. They must have done a lot of work getting Minas Tirith camera-ready after all those years. And it was especially cool of them to hire an indigenous Balrog instead of just setting a European actor on fire the way most movies do.

The bits of the movies that make me stop and say âwowâ are mostly just the mountain shots as the fellowship hikes and the green hills around the shire. Nothing against the rest of the visuals (like you mentioned, the cities were done really well), Iâm just much more interested by nature personally

For me, the nature moments don't have too many musical tie ins with the exceptions of the herogasm helicopter shot for the full fellowship theme shortly after leaving Rivendell.
When I listen to the soundtrack I see Minas Morgul, and Weathertop, and Khazad-Dhum, the Argonath, the caverns below Khazad-Dhum....

I think part of the issue is that fewer movies and tv shows use licensed music anymore so most music in movies its just the score now. I blame it on streaming as it eats into profits, as can be seen by things like scrubs reruns not using the original music from the episodes.

1492: Conquest of Paradise. Very few people remember the movie (I still do and rewatch it regularly), but the soundtrack by Vangelis is an absolute banger.
In general, his soundtracks tend to be better than the movies. Alexander is another great example. Chariots of Fire and Bounty are fine movies, but still greatly enhanced by his soundtracks. Perhaps the only movie that stood on its own against a soundtrack by Vangelis was Blade Runner.

This is not such an interesting question anymore because it's a trope to blow the budget on recognizable songs in a shit movie.
But if your looking for the biggest difference in quality, I'd say Singles (1992) Not that the movie is bad, just that the soundtrack is legendary.
EDIT: also because the best tracks are original recordings and not just a playlist of already popular songs.
