Blocking doesn't stop them from propagandizing others.

Echo Chambers are great. You just think they're horrible because you're in an echo chamber that says they're horrible.

OpenStars@discuss.online · 6 pts · 1d

It sure would be nice to have the choice to opt-in to an echo chamber, instead of being told that I cannot opt-out of the opposite.

Kangae_Hishiryo@scribe.disroot.org · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

You wouldn't say that if you actually knew that most echo chambers are like the Incels, the neonazis or the pro-MAGA.

But interacting with them will be interpreted as "engagement" and lead the algorithms to push them into more feeds and rank them higher.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · 12 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Well not on lemmy I don't think they use algorathms to rank content and are open about how they rank comments and such. Not entirely sure though I am not a computer guy.

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d

Sorting by ‘active’ takes into account the time of the last comment, and/or the number of comments. And it's the default sorting option in the default UI and apps that I've seen.

SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org · 14 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Interacting with them won't either. There is no winning with them.

grue@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The point is not to change the troll's opinion; the point is to discredit them in front of whoever else may be reading the thread.

Also, the other action other than blocking them is reporting them and having a mod or admin remove them for everybody at once.

Both of those are better options than individually blocking.

the_fuckler@nord.pub · 3 pts · 1d

Not gonna lie, I see people doing this theatrical shit in the 2020's and I instantly hate them for killing any good vibes that were happening. They no longer represent their politics to me.

If they're propagandizing, there's not an argument you can make to stop them.

huey_m@piefed.social · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Not sure arguing with them really does either. I think this was true in simple chronological message boards, but anything that boosts content due to engagement is just going to make it worse...

grue@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 23h (2 replies)

To be clear, I'm writing from a Lemmy/Reddit/Slashdot perspective. Maybe on Mastodon/Twitter (or, dog forbid, Facebook) it's different, but I wouldn't know because I've never used that shit.

huey_m@piefed.social · 1 pts · 22h (1 reply)

Pretty sure reddit uses some algorithmic stuff to push threads, no? If you jump all over a bullshit political post, for example, doesn't that help push it into 'hot' or whatever? (Honestly asking, been off reddit for years at this point).

Lemmy/piefed/etc might be less prone to it though, that's fair, though I've so far run into less outright propagandistic stuff here so far... might've just been lucky on that front.

grue@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13h

I was thinking more in terms of replying to the comments within threads, rather than the posts themselves. But yeah, I guess you've got a point that the number of comments under a post might influence its position in some types of feeds.

OrganicMustard@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

If everyone blocks them then yes. I'm doing my part of the job.

Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 41 pts · 1d (51 replies)

Over the years I've realized the futility of engaging with idiocy online. It's either trolls, bots, or morons, and I'm not convinced any interaction is worth it to me, all it does is piss me off, and I'm just enabling their stupid bullshit.

So yeah, there's a one strike and you're out policy now. Does that increase my echo chamber, sure, but I'd rather interact with like minded people than piss away my own happiness by feeding bots, idiots, and trolls.

Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 12 pts · 1d

The thing that cost the the election was that overwhelmingly popular left policy was entirely unrepresented; the left screamed "Genocide, funding ICE, and doing fuckall to help people will decrease votes", liberals said "What the fuck are you gonna do, not vote? We need to appeal to Moderate Republicans(tm) by talking about stopping migrant caravans, including republicans in your cabinet, banning trans people from sports, and The Most Lethal Military Ever!!".

And once again, basically no republicans voted democrat, while massively unpopular republican policies decreased turnout.

It would be trivial to sway people with "Do you want free healthcare? Do you want to NOT resume a genocide? Do you want to keep federally legal pot? Do you want Trump to stay in prison?"

I really don’t come to social media to change the world or people’s minds. I don’t know where this mentality of “you must change people’s minds” comes from. When was the last time some rando changed yours?

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1d (12 replies)

I get enlightened on Lemmy almost everyday as long as people have discussion with me. But that's the thing people resort to band whenever you question their opinion. If you look at United States, Trump built a coalition of former Democrats to be on his cabinet. That's one example of people changing their minds, why can't we on the left do that? How the hell did he get RFK Jr on his cabinet?😂😂

undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch · 5 pts · 1d (4 replies)

I’ll grant you that the links to content are informative but usually the comments are full of people missing the point, taking your comment out of context, etc. like this person that’s trying to act like I’m racist because I said it’s difficult to find vegan food in Mexico.

I’d say 90% of comments are just a waste of time. I would never come here expecting positive engagement with others.

This is sad to hear, I remember the Golden age of Reddit was so open and you could have a discussion with everybody. I was hoping that Lemmy was stuck in that era, but it seems that down vaults aren't enough for this website. They must resort to banning people with different opinions

rumba@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Reddit hid downvoted comments, so if you said something truly contrary, you'd end up just getting buried.

You can indeed have discussions here, but as soon as they start going off the rails, the chances of getting blocked are pretty high.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

or getting reported.

i never had like any reddit comment reported in like a decade... then around '22 all the sudden contrary or sarcastic comments became site-wide ban offenses. mostly because people would report you and the AI would ban you, and you had to argue and appeal to get unbanned.

contrarianism was normal and healthy part of the site for over a decade, now it's considered harassment and assault by the AI admins.

We should be welcoming defectors from the right but the oligarchy has everything so influence operatized that we are led to loudly reject them so we remain unable to win.

ie MTG. That said, everyone that's been against the bad guys from the start should get at least one I told you so on a turncoat. But they should be welcomed and encouraged to defect even if you don't trust their motives as being anything beyond self interest.

pelespirit@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I can accept that MTG is no longer a trumper, I can't accept most of her anything else. She is racist and destructive and trying to set up her next bid for election. I'm guessing the next VP?

“This hateful, racists [sic], and demeaning rhetoric should not be tolerated. Ever. But they allow it and keep her in the inner circle,” Greene wrote Sunday in a social media post on X.

Note: I included her anti-racism because it seems like she's not used to it.

bedwyr@piefed.ca · -1 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Idk what she has been up to lately, but here changes in stances, repudiating Israel, calling gaza a genocide, supporting universal healthcare, what else, opposing the Iran war, and what else, opposing geo engineering, (yes her base is opposed to it primarily because chemtrails but they are also against spraying sulphur dioxide in the upper atmosphere to blot out the sun.

What else, there were others too. She's further left than almost the entire democratic party at this point.

I don't think there is a single white democrat further left of her just given those positions. Bernie doesn't count at this point. Name one, Ron Wyden? Supports sending weapons, incluing assault rifles to Israeli settlers in the west bank, just last summer.

Idk, seems to me like Israel and their super fans are manipulating us, again.

SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

RFK Jr. had like three percent in polls as an independent candidate, so he went to Democrats with an offer to withdraw and endorse them in exchange for a healthcare position. Sure enough, nobody there even listened to that constantly choking nut. So he went with the same offer to Trump, who decided “yeah, sure, who cares”. The gag, of course, is that there's no guarantee that the three percent voted for Trump — they might've split evenly or all chosen Democrats.

However, I'm not sure what about that roadkill-eating conspiracy-theorist brainworm is Democrat.

You can't really "change someone's mind" unless they're receptive to it. Quite often you'll just end up in a situation where both parties are already hard set into their position; then they both enthusiastically repeat their best arguments and logic, while completely ignoring what the other person is saying. The hope is that there's a magic combination of words that will trigger the incantation that changes the opposition's mind. There usually isn't.

As a thought experiment, if you wouldn't be willing to "change teams" no matter what the other person says, they probably feel the same way towards you.

I have a family member who is an avid Pauline Hanson / Trump supporter; despite my reminders that those people hate me for who I am at a fundamental level and would see me suppressed, deported, begging on the streets, or worse. I'm "one of the good ones" you see, an exemption to patch over the cognitive dissonance. I would never support them, because it would be literal suicide to do so. I'm sure they have similarly strong opinions about my favourite progressive political parties.

That said, I don't have a good actual solution, and at least arguing about things raises visibility and could sway undecided third parties. But at a certain point it becomes too exhausting to continue arguing all the time.

So when elections happen in the USA, that's the elections everybody talks about throughout the whole world. When our trillionaires make decisions, the rest of the world listens. Debating with people in general is something I’ve found to be stupid and pointless as I’ve gotten older, even if they’re not trolls. I don’t even like watching videos of others debating. People come out the other end more entrenched than they were before. As for trolls, I don’t engage at all. My echo chamber is devoid of righties and nothing of value was lost.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1d (24 replies)

debating people is great when they want to actually debate.

they don't thought, anymore. especially online. and on campuses, student activists try to shut down debates rather than attended them and learn something. one of my favorite part was attending lectures and debates and while some where shitty, i always learned something.

people don't believe in the principle of charity anymore either. you can't have debate or education without the principle of charity... otherwise it's just a trying to beat down the opposite side.

not to mention most popular 'debate' is not real debate, it's people being ignorant assholes and doubling-down on it and people viewing that as 'confidence' and 'victory'.

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 7 pts · 1d (10 replies)

I think debates about things in the science and similar subjects can be interesting. It has to be a scenario where everyone means well and is passionate about the subject matter. But if it’s some echo chamber right-wing “debate” where it’s a guy in a suit with a bunch of puppets nodding along, there’s no value to be had. I’ve had friends send me those Jubilee videos and I don’t want to watch those ever, regardless of their political leanings. Propaganda in the US has broken people though and they think everything should have some opportunity to one-up the perceived competition. That kind of thing is antithetical to progress and education, and is self-serving nonsense.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (9 replies)

cool, that's how I see pretty much all 'left-wing' debate too. Propaganda and insanity, with no basis in the complexities of the real world.

A huge chunk of 'progressives' are anti-progress and seem to believe resources are infinite and their theories are flawless and perfect... almost as if they are just as stupid and propagandized as the people they hate on the right...

I wanted to be an educator myself, professionally, but I left because I saw how delusional leftist it was becoming and how it was shooting itself in the foot, always focusing on feelings and praising ignorance as ideology rather than seeking knowledge and leaving the ideology outside of the classroom.

You can't have education and debate and knowledge if your priority is pushing ideology, the ideology is supposed to be subservient to those things, not the other way around. But that's not how people in educational spaces think anymore, many are just ideologues who want to push out anyone who isn't as extremist as they are. Whether it be on the right or the left.

orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts · 3 pts · 1d (8 replies)

No one is immune from propaganda, but I separate out progressive and leftist movements. Liberalism enables anti-progressive ideas, while identifying as the greater good. While leftist movements advocate for things like equal rights and breaking free from the chains of Zionist enablement. The problem I have with a lot of leftist echo chamber content is that it’s a lot of punching down at liberals that are often open to leftist ideas and movements, which is counterproductive to educating and welcoming them. Fred Hampton saw this and that’s why he was never hateful or inflammatory towards fellow working class people. He correctly identified that all working class are in the same boat, even if they’ve been divided up by differing propagandist camps.

TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · -3 pts · 1d (7 replies)

That’s your take and that’s fine. But there’s educational takeaways from the actions of others. Hence the mention of Fred Hampton—a single name drop coupled with reasoning. Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz · 12 pts · 1d (1 reply)

If you find an unlabeled bot, most admins will ban them.

So far every time I've seen someone claim Lemmy is full of bots, they haven't been able to identify 1 unlabled bot.

And its not even hard, there are users that AI slop in arguments, so I think its literally just people wanting an excuse to dismiss viewpoints they don't like.

MrGeneric@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 20h

I was talking about the internet as a whole, I don’t know the specific security or botness of Lemmy, I’ve not found one so far as far as I can tell. Most users Ive seen have pretty long histories with varying opinions.

the problem is the problematic people are so insanely prolific. they also have multiple accounts on multiple instances, unlike normies who have one on one instance.

i was browsing lemmy logged out this morning and vs logging in it's like night and day. mostly because of a dozen or so power users who just spam every community incessantly with their rage-bait agendas. and a few of which go into the comments are try to silence any dissenter, skepticism, or disagreement by labeling such comments as an -ism.

It's how I've come from card-carrying Republican to more or less fitting the label "progressive."

starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I think this is for people who are less "annoying" and more "actively lying and being bad faith." If someone says the elections were stolen, vaccines cause autism, and liberals hate America, I have other things I would rather do than investigate every one of the infinite conspiracy theories that I already know many others have debunked. It's essentially an exercise in bad faith rhetoric at that point, which is just so incredibly boring. I'll look into a few to see the patterns of how they lie, and then I'm good.

Tja@programming.dev · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

That's a very heavy lifting interpretation of the comic. It literally says "I don't like this thing". Not "this person is arguing in bad faith". This is how echo chambers form, and lemmy is a textbook example of one.

starelfsc2@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 23h

Well maybe bad faith wasn't the right term, I think for me it's just that if someone disagrees with me, my response is almost never even close to "I don't like this," unless they're being hateful, unreasonably rude, saying proven false conspiracies, etc. Most of the time it's "oh I think they don't realize or haven't considered xyz" and most of the time either they didn't know or they correct me on something.

For things I would block, if a racist maga person comes in and says something, I gain absolutely nothing from hearing how climate change is fake, how libs are the real racists, how we hate trump for no reason. It's just negativity conspiracy brainrot and it's a huge waste of my time. Same for posts about what random out of touch billionaire #45 said, same for people generally being mean or super negative towards others, that's what I actually don't like and am happier having blocked it to never see again.

The fact that these platforms are trying to remove the block button is, to my mind, the strongest argument in favor of using it. These platforms are often mentally corrosive and will do everything in their power to ensure that you stay addicted, outraged, and idle. If you're busy debating reactionary idiots, who these days might not even be real people, then that is sapping your mental energy away from more productive efforts in your party/union.

The first, most central and foundational principle of international diplomacy and conflict resolution is that you must always afford both sides a voice. If you don't, there can be no communication, no progress, no way forward but conflict.

Take a moment and try to feel what you feel when someone ignores you, as if you were thin air. Does that emotion lead somewhere good?

i know a tonne of white ppl who you cant even fathom discussion around racism let alone politics without them going 'youre bumming me out. why cant we only speak about flowers and meadows'

This assumes everyone works with the same healthy boundaries to know when they are reasonable.

Pnt 4 there: disagreements and differences happen and should be allowed to happen.

A person who is in a toxic state knows how to distort those points in order to vilify anything and anyone as if it's 'toxic'. This is exactly how the right vilify anyone who doesn't look like them. All justified for 'feeling safe' in order to escape discomfort.

SarahValentine@pawb.social · 8 pts · 1d (5 replies)

Also a few of the worst posters start quality posts and are just morons in the comments, so that way I still get to see their posts.

For example, this is my reminder that this user is a dumbshit: image

kestrel7_7@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Controversial opinion but seeing people repost the same tired ass arguments that we all get from the media actually isn’t that helpful to anything.

Put another way, I already have to tolerate people who disagree with me all day every day at work and in daily life and so on. If I want to learn something I’ll go read an actual book on the subject. Subjecting myself to online shitposting may not be as helpful.

There is nothing intellectually stunting about seeking community with people who are less argumentative, just like there is nothing enlightening about arguing with people who are posting in bad faith.

Impractical_Island@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 16h

I think there is a time to build up and a time to tear down. True growth only happens when you are outside your comfort zone, but it is perfectly fine and dandy to want to have control over that. At the least, there needs to be a passive force within the system to entice people into growth that can be stepped away from or engaged for general positive growth. There needs to be beneficial governors of men (people).

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I've been doing that more after joining the Fediverse but there are a handful of exceptions. One is an absolute nutter who spreads disinformation like it's butter, and I can't bring myself to block him because while I'll never be able to make him stop, at least I can advise others that a) it is false information and b) he is immune to evidence. TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 19h

yep. you can block individual things, but you can't block all content, and people love shoving controversial content onto everything.

even in my own offline hobbies... in online spaces lots of folks grandstand over social/political issues in the hobby and try to make people 'pick sides' so they can call them names. today i saw a post to a FB group I used for local events... demanding everyone boycott this company... that nobody uses anyway and isn't even related to the hobby in question... it's insane. and if you remove the post they cry foul and you are trying to 'silence' them and you're on the 'bad side' of the issue.

and face it, the vibe of lemmy has changed substantially over the past few years, and it's way more full of controversy-seeking nutjobs than it was 2-3 years ago. making any most with subtley and nuace on any issue here just gets you harassed and labeled and attacked, because dumbasses can't see things as more complex than absolutely good/right, or absolutely evil/wrong.

This is educational policy in many places... that's what's terrifying. Students/parents were getting teachers fired over hearing things they didn't like.

I wanted to go into education in 2010 or so... but started seeing this was where education was going... and decided to not waste my efforts on it. And yeah all the people making those decisions... were the type of people whose parents paid for their graduate school... and bought them condos... etc. Folks who didn't live in the real world and though the real world should never be acknowledged because it made them feel bad about themselves and we must never allow anyone to ever feel bad!

Maybe, but i dont care anymore.

The internet got so ass overall. There is so much noise. There are just a few tolerable places left. I wont waste my precious time with shit i dont like or even worse which makes me angry. The internet supposed to be my distraction from how shitty my job is and my frustrations with all the idiots i have to encounter on a daily basis. Without block/allow lists this just isnt possible for me anymore for years.

And yeah sometimes its nothing big or important. I dont like the anime community in the internet at large. No special reason. I just dont like them. So i blocked everything i could so that stuff just never appears on my feed. Even though i enjoy a little anime in my live. As in japanese animated cartoons. Theres good stuff. But tbh it isnt even just anime. I pretty much stopped interacting with any specific fandom. And if i'm starting to see too many rick and morty, star wars, trek[...] whatever memes i'm going to block them as well. Its my feed.

IMHO thats way more valid than having some shitty engagement algo dictate what i see. I preselected my content already by beeing on the fediverse and then i've chosen my subs for communities. Thats already a big/tiny(?) ass echo chamber. Why not block shit i just dont like?
