For the year 1992, the special effects were outstanding.

That's true!

Check out the series The Mind's Eye if you want to see more of that era of computer animation. It's just music with computer animation. It even has some bits that look straight out of The Lawnmower Man.

I literally just watched that 3 days ago, I have the DVD and was feeling nostalgic. Really reminds me of early video gaming quality graphics.

aw yeah! I'd heard about that but totally forgotten about it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind%27s_Eye_(film_series)

I found the sequel on DVD over a decade ago for $5. Still haven't watched it.
Maybe the longer I wait the better it will get?
nikolasdimi@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 160d
Yap. It's like a good whiskey.
smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 160d
Perfect. I'll leave it another decade then. Don't want to rush things.
Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 159d
Nope. It was bad. Really, really bad.
smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 159d
Star Wars Life Day Special bad? Sharknado bad? Velocipastor bad??
In other words, unwatchably bad such that it pains you to finish, or so bad that it comes all the way back around to entertaining?
SlurpingPus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 159d
‘Sharknado’ isn't even bad, it's just a modern b-movie.
smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 159d
It's the modern equivalent of Batman (1966) - "campy".
Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 159d
I never finished it and never have had the urge to watch it again for thirty years.
cdf12345@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 159d
Nah, watch it now. It’s been 30 years already, it’s time to watch the fusion of new tech and the threat of society collapse was envisioned in the mid 90’s.

King sued (and won) because the movie had so little to do with his story
LowtierComputer@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 160d
Wow. I'd never heard that. More than $2.5M too, in the nineties.

Things in common with the story:

I think somebody gets killed with a lawnmower at some point in both
AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 159d
Ah, maybe. It's been a while.
I'll amend the list.
whaleross@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 160d
Hah! I've also been thinking to watch the sequel for quite some time but have not yet mustered the courage.

LM2: Beyond cyberspace was basically just Tron.

If you're in the US, it's free on Tubi (ublock origin adblocker for Firefox should work): https://tubitv.com/movies/675101/lawnmower-man-2-beyond-cyberspace
I thought I saw it on dailymotion but can't find it now. I think it's on archive as well.
whaleross@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 160d
Thanks, I have it laying around. But I need to be prepared and in the mood for the cringe.
nikolasdimi@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 160d
haha tbh honest there is no Pierce Brosnan in no 2 so chances are thin.
this is actually based on a steven king short story/novel.
and i think steven king got super upset when he saw what happened to his story
bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 10 pts · 160d
Did you read the story? It has almost nothing to do with the movie except for one small scene where a guy gets killed by a lawnmower.
The short story is about someone ordering someone to mow his lawn and a dirty fat ugly guy arrives. He goes to the lawn with this monstrosity of a lawnmower. The lawnmower proceeds to move on its own with an awful noise and the fat guy follows it around to eat up the cut grass. When the lawn owner sees this he is horrified and then gets killed by the lawnmower.

I don’t know if this is a shitpost or not
bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de · 1 pts · 160d
Well, if anything it would be a shitcomment. But it's real. The short story is crazy. Of course Mr King put it more eloquent than me.
nikolasdimi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 160d
Nope haven't read it but yes I heard it's very very different.
Hackworth@piefed.ca · 5 pts · 160d
Saw the sequel in the theater. By far the best part is the beginning, where they replay the end of the first movie. ACCESS DENIED ACCESS DENIED
nikolasdimi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 160d
did the sequel get a theatrical release? I am surprised.
Hackworth@piefed.ca · 8 pts · 160d
Yeah, it felt very much like watching a straight-to-video movie on the big screen.
galoisghost@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 160d
Of course he did. No one got naked and no one ate a gopher.
Pringles@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 160d
I re-watched that one recently after remembering it from my childhood. It's decently enjoyable. Still have the sequel lined up for when I'm extraordinarily bored. It will happen eventually.
stumu415@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 159d
The video game was great too.
nikolasdimi@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 159d
Oh no there is a video game as well? Was it a decent one? I am not a gamer so I wouldn't know.
Rhaedas@fedia.io · 3 pts · 160d
Sometimes a sequel isn't needed, even a cliffhanger or ambiguous ending is fine.
