One of the most outspoken members of the US Republican Party over the Epstein files has told the BBC he is "not satisfied until the survivors are satisfied".
Thomas Massie, a congressman representing Kentucky, told the Newsnight programme: "Men need to be perp-walked in handcuffs to the jail, and until we see that here in this country... we don't have a system of justice that's working."
Massie has criticised the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the number of files that it redacted or withheld after it complied with a law - co-written by Massie - to release all its material.
DOJ officials have said they have released all of their files other than certain items permitted to be exempt.
In contrast with the situation in the US, the UK was "the only place that we're seeing arrests", Massie said. He said it was "ironic that [the US] thought we could have more justice by becoming independent from Britain".

The DOJ is like, "But that will make the all pedofiles and our pedo-boss look bad. Besides, the DOW is still above 40k dollars"
SpikesOtherDog@ani.social · 9 pts · 144d
Next week: we can't do that, the Dow is still about 25K
Bwaz@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 144d
Perpwalk? How about this instead: we'll put them in charge of the entire federal government and nearly all media, even the nuclear button. Better, right?

Start with the giant orange windbag. Until he goes to prison there is no justice.

Elected official taking a good bet on how to stay in power for the long term OR and actual human being. So very difficult to know with politicians (Republican or Democrat) as they split hairs to pretend to be different but are in fact, the same.

Terrible headline. Perp walks are inhumane spectacles and may prevent reintegration after punishment.
People should not be marked for life. The American sense for justice is just people getting off on cruelty.
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 143d
Nah. Murderous pedophiles need to be treated inhumanely, not made richer and more powerful, then get hugs from understanding liberals, "oh, poor you, pedophilia is a disease", narrative.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -12 pts · 143d
Only in your own head cannon.
Detracting from anyone's humanity is bad. Doesn't mean their actions shouldn't be hated.
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 143d
The biggest problem around Epstein is that for Americans, actions had no consequences. NONE.
so yeah, Andrew Windsor-Mount Batten-whatever needs to be led out in public in handcuffs, taken to a holding facility, stripped naked and sprayed with delousing agent. Then we'll give him a free cotton jumpsuit and sneakers until his trial.
Italy got it spot on with it's Fascists.
This really affected party membership for quite a while.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -1 pts · 143d
Then prosecute them like anyone else. Fantasies of violence from the state help noone. Make the state be just and it will be good. Or advocate for vigilanteism. But not for an injust state.
alessandro@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 142d
It's not true their killing help no one: definitely helps other co-criminals (at large) who wants their mouth shut.
P1k1e@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 143d
This is correct on principal. You remove humanity from one group and suddenly anyone hated by the state becomes part of that group. So we shouldn't....
But I also really REALLY crave their suffering
Gladaed@feddit.org · 2 pts · 143d
Fair point. And in the face of systemic injustice this is a reasonable emotion.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 143d
A perp walk isn't detracting anyone's humanity, holding people accountable for their crimes is in no way anti human rights.

You are wrong, you can't beat nazis with kindness and compassion. This is that stupid paradox of tolerance crap all over again. It reeks of apology, and borders on nazi sympathy.
VicVinegar@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 143d
For almost any other crime I would agree with you, but in this case I think we need the spectacle. No one should give a flying fuck about a pedophile's reintegration after a punishment. Especially not for the folks who organized, facilitated and profited from said pedophilia.
Those of us who understand and respect the American Constitution down it's tenets and principles, are so dejected that we need to see some perp walks to believe justice exists at all here.
Its all just words on paper. It's the actions and accountability of our government that make justice real. Sure it was never perfect; definitely needed lots of improvement. But without accountability, it's gone. The fabric is unwoven. I don't believe our government is hostile enough towards the pedophiles that run it right now, so these shitbirds need to make me believe again.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -8 pts · 143d
Human rights are for everyone. Not just for people that "deserve" them. You cannot ride yourself or others of them.
If their actions offend you and the public, prosecute and more importantly prevent them diligently.
I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 143d
My dude, there are like 15 people in the world that if you just straight up slaughtered, the world would be better for it. Don't pretend like that isn't the case.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -9 pts · 143d
Doesn't make it right.
MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 143d
Most certainly does. Pull your head out of the Utopian BS.
moustachio@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 143d
Yes it does. These men have made a mockery of the justice system. They don’t deserve to be treated humanely.
Batmancer@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 143d
I disagree it does. These men and their predecessors corrupted the justice system from the very beginning of the idea of justice and its creation. Calling for greater violence and humiliation begets more violence and humiliation.
Criminal rights are human rights.
I would love to be Player 2 any day of the week because I feel powerless using other avenues, still wrong. It would feel SO right though.
I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 142d
Thus the paradox of tolerance.
This is where humanitarianism begins to fail and utilitarianism picks up the slack.
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 143d
Neither does denial and tolerance of murder and rape.
Gladaed@feddit.org · 1 pts · 143d
Yes.
BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 143d
So what, no prisons? Cause pretty sure being locked up rids a person of their human right.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -4 pts · 143d
But temporarily and predictably while somewhat preserving dignity. But yes. Incarceration is highly problematic but can be needed at times.
liuther9@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 143d
You should be perp walked for defending their reputation
Gladaed@feddit.org · -6 pts · 143d
I am not.
blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 143d
Your point would be fine if we were talking about petty theft.
There is zero possibility of real reintegration for con artists.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 143d
No it wouldn't, dont accept their faulty premise. If someone steal a candy bar they should walk in front of a judge and it should be publicly announced wjat they did and what the punishment is, even if it's just probabtion or something.
A perp walk is a perfectly decent part of the process of holding people accountable for their crimes.
auntieclokwise@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 142d
These are inhuman people. Monsters even. A perpwalk ought to be the least of the dehumanizing things we do to them, given their crimes. There is no reintegration possible for people like this.
bokherif@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 143d
Wow defending pedos. Must be a republican
NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 142d
A perpwalk for someone who raped (and potentially killed) little kids in a sex trafficking ring is the most tame thing that should happen to them.
auntieclokwise@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 142d
If some of the accusations are to be believed, they didn't just kill and rape little kids. They tortured them. They filmed the rape, torture, and murder of them and delighted in the recordings. They ate their bodies! Yes, really. That's probably the most plausible explanation for the many very strange references to very wealthy, powerful people making a weirdly big deal out of jerky. And we have that straight from the emails.
zarkanian@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 142d
So, we've gone from emails giving us Pizzagate to emails giving us Jerkygate? Sheesh, this simulation sucks! The writers need to quit rehashing material.
auntieclokwise@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 141d
These writers REALLY love to reuse material. If you look up stuff like what was happening in the leadup to the Great Depression, it sounds eerily familiar. The stuff in the Gilded Age is shockingly similar to what we see going on today. And go lookup how Hitler swayed conservative Christians (including Catholics). It sounds like stuff that could have been written yesterday. Oh and LGBTQ hate? Nothing new. LGBTQ people were literally one of the first groups the Nazis went after.
But that whole thing also gives hope. Such evil has existed before and been overcome. It can be done again. It also often falls because of its own stupidity.
phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 143d
Yeeaaaahhh but you do understand who and what we're talking about, right?
Yes, Equal justice for everyone, and yeah, perp walks would indeed be inhumane as we don't do that and feathering anymore but the entire point is THAT THESE HUMAN SHIT STAINS HAVE FACED ZERO REPERCUSSIONS FOR RAPING CHILDREN AND LITTLE CHILDREN.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -3 pts · 142d
Yes. But I am complaining about the phrasing. I understand that this particular case is a shit show.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 143d
A perp walk is not inhumane, public criminal trials are a hallmark of democracy and human rights.
Gladaed@feddit.org · -1 pts · 143d
In Europe we disagree. Exposing a criminals identity is illegal. You have a right to be forgotten. And you deserve no infamy. You must be forgotten.
It's about the crime, not the criminal.
Contrary@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 143d
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 143d
And yet the criminal trials in Europe are also open to the public -- nobody on this thread said anything about after the trial until you brought it up.
Gladaed@feddit.org · 0 pts · 143d
Some trials are public, but the identity of the criminal is usually not.
That's why no reputable media states the full name of the criminal and they use coverings to hide their faces.
Bluescluestoothpaste@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 142d
Well, I will say that I agree that after serving their sentences for child rape they should be forgotten.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 143d
I'm with you. The American prison system needs to be entirely reformed with an emphasis on rehabilitation, education, job preparation and experience, entrepreneurial studies, etc.
Most of these people are going to be released eventually, and making them ready for reintegration into society is more important that just the passing satisfaction of harsh retribution.
Batmancer@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 143d
I agree with you entirely. It took me a while to realize criminal rights are human rights. I was mistaking vengeance for justice for a while.
