Thank you!

I destroyed my body at the gym the day before so it seems like that's the key to all this lol.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 145d (9 replies)

It's wild and wet out there. Not sure where little dude goes in bad weather because it's not home. I bought bedding straw to put in the round plastic bin I have and a tarp for now. Hopefully set up a dry area tomorrow

StudChud@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 145d (1 reply)

Aw puss will be alright. They're tough little guys, true survivors. I'm sure he'll be rapt with the straw :3

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d

If he even comes back into the area... I've been changing the spot a lot which cats hate. And the tarp is rustling a lot which could be offputting

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 145d (2 replies)

That's incredibly kind of you :)

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d (1 reply)

I'm doing too much but have been getting genuinely anxious over this cat.

Gibsonhasafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d

I understand to a degree. You've changed their life โค๏ธ

duncan_bayne@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 145d

Not sure where little dude goes in bad weather because itโ€™s not home.

If he's anything like our past cats, to the nearest place with an open fire that feeds him treats.

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 145d (2 replies)

How do you know he is not going home? I think you mentioned he has owners? He might be ok and in shelter.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 144d (1 reply)

It was raining and when it slowed to a drizzle he went past in all the wet. At night. (My council has a cat curfew.) Thereโ€™s also a flattened area in a nook under the eaves which he may be using as shelter.

Afaik heโ€™s โ€œownedโ€ but thereโ€™s a lot of owners who let them live as outside cats and do jackshit to care for them. And it has happened before that a previous cat was suddenly coming to me much more because his owner had moved away leaving him behind :(

SituationCake@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 144d

You are a kind human to help him.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 145d (7 replies)

Neighbour is dogsitting an Australian shepherd this week. The dog's owner is a mutual friend.

Neighbour had to run errands today and the dog is crying. Messaged neighbour that I'm taking the dog to my house (have keys to his joint) and he can stay out longer.

Doggo is snoozing on the couch right now and has made himself at home.

SaneMartigan@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 145d (2 replies)

Is that a blue heeler?

StudChud@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d

Tis it's own breed, bred in California from imported collies.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Shepherd

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d

It's one of these

Longer coat. Super friendly and very clever.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 144d (1 reply)

I understand there's a connection with the Basque sheepherders of early California - I believe they were the first to develop the breed. Only reasonable I reckon to call a dog with absolutely NO connection to Australia an Australian Shepherd. We already had kelpies and heelers so not needed by us as working dogs.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 144d

Kind of like Outback steakhouse, which has zero to do with Australia. The founders never even been here.

Has anyone had a โ€œcanker soreโ€ on their tongue before? I just woke up with this sore yesterday. Eating has now become a painful experience. Food has to be in liquid form to go down and even then it still hurts. Booked in with the doc for later today.

Dinner will need to be some kind of soup.

Stress caused apparently, itโ€™s amazing how much stress messes up our physical health too.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 144d

yup.

Xylocaine. Gel. not ointment. Safe for oral use. Available at chemist. will numb like the dickens.

Rub some Vegemite on it, that stings but can help. Or get some Chlorofluor oral gel from the chemist.

Make sure youโ€™re up on B12 (so Marmite might be a better choice of spread)

Dog sitting update.

Neighbour asked me if it's okay if him and his missus stay out till late and can dog stay here.

I benevolently agreed....not letting onto that the dog has been walked, fed and is currently snuggled up to me on the couch.

I'm sleeping on the couch tonight it seems.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 145d (1 reply)

I ventured to the local NQR store for the first time today. I'm not sure if I like going there for the value or because they have different things to buy. I've stocked up on salmon, in the form of both burgers and frozen cooked chunks. I also got some turkey schnitzels and a frozen veg mix.

There was one small mess up - I thought I was buying a bottle of shampoo and two of conditioner, but it was actually two shampoos and one conditioner. As I always use the conditioner quicker this will lead to a significant imbalance.

Yeah this tarp has liberated itself from half the clamps and tried to sail the world. The sheer size of it lets it catch too much air. Itโ€™s also released a flap thatโ€™s in the way of where he jumps out of the yard.

I am just 1000 steps away from completing this weeks fitness goals. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

At the moment I'm still focusing mostly on just working out a baseline for what I can actually do and what timing works out best. I have definitely lost a lot of strength since the last time I was doing exercise, I'm tired out by a very low level of work at the moment.

The treadmill has been working well, being able to watch a video while I walk makes it much easier to motivate myself to get a few extra steps at the end of the day if I need to (and will definitely be much easier once winter hits). It also has a wi-fi connection to a phone app so I can create my own programs, so I've got a basic interval program to start with to try and up my capacity to be able to do some running as well. It does fold away really easily too, so I can also use the same space for doing my weights and it is still usable as a study. I

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 144d (1 reply)

What treadmill did you get? Would like one but am in a one bedroom apartment so keep deciding against. And keen to hear updates - am trying to just organically move. Got up and went for a swim at 6am thins week. But have lost so much strength since my pre COVID yoga days I just get discouraged. I like hearing from others on the same journey not like influencers

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 144d

It's a Walkingpad mx16. It doesn't have any incline, but it does go up to 16km/h and is big enough that you can actually run.

This very cheap ebay reader claims that this cat doesnโ€™t have a chip, but due to its quality it canโ€™t really be trusted. And he was trying to come inside ๐Ÿ˜ญ Which I canโ€™t allow because I havenโ€™t even got the floor bare and clear to be able to repetitively vacuum it. And he wouldnโ€™t accept confinement. No idea what the future holdsโ€ฆ Iโ€™m currently barely able to look after myself let alone have another pet. But I might see if I can get hold of a higher quality scanner. Iโ€™ve rehoisted the sail and set the bin up with the straw bedding so I hope he finds it.

Dalek_Thal@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d (9 replies)

Anyone know how to drain a kitchen sink that's been fucked over by storms? Damn thing stopped draining water today. The last time I did washing up was three days ago, and I draino'd it yesterday.

UPDATE: Cleaned out the sink, pulled apart the pipes and cleaned them too, still not draining properly. Wandered outside to dump a fucktonne of dirty sink water, and found a great big fuck off pool of old water and shit that had flooded out of the grate downstairs. The storm dumped somewhere around 20mm of rain directly on my side of the building, so best guess is the pipes flooded.

Notes for those wondering: second floor apartment in a small, two storey block of units - 70s style brick flats. Toilet and shower are on their own pipes, with kitchen sink and washing machine on the other set (the flooded one). My next stop I believe is the agent, as this is well outside of my control. Hopefully though it all drains out over the next couple days - I don't own a dishwasher, so dishes have gotta be done by hand.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 145d (5 replies)

House or apartment?

In a house, there should be an waste water inspection grate outside near the kitchen. If it's full, the issue is down stream, best to call your local water provider (plumbers will charge you more!!!!) and ask them to check if there's a fault.

Also check your other sinks etc. If they're draining fine, then it's a localised issue....which is good.

If not full then it's possibly the U-bend underneath your sink. Pretty easy to remove and clean. Otherwise you can push a wire through the drain to check if there is a blockage. If there is, remove the U-bend, and clean.

Good luck :)

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d (4 replies)

What I do is open the grate, dig around in there with a broom stick handle, replace the grate, put something heavy on the grate, fill up the bath, sinks etc, block the shower hole, let all plugs out, flush the toilet. Repeat. Then I go and watch the water gush down sewerage pipe from the back of the yard where there's another hole.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 145d (3 replies)

There's a proper sewer drain inspection hatch on my neighbours property (which I can see over my fence). When there's a clog, water gushes out of it. The sewer pit is right behind our houses and gets clogged regularly. Once it's past the property line, it's Melbourne Water issued.

They clear it up within hours and spray our yards with antibacterial stuff to kill all the nasties.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 145d (2 replies)

That's interesting!

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 145d (1 reply)

If all your drains are backing up, the issue is definitely downstream and most likely not your responsibility. Unless your sewer pipe on your property gets clogged (which it really shouldn't).

Our issue is that roots etc clog up the sewer pit (where all the street drains connect) and we're the first ones to notice.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 145d

I've only had blocked outside drain maybe twice. I do the El Flusho for maintenance.

Bernadette just dropped a video about sewing on buttons. I'm deeply impressed with her technique of doing the holes first then putting the holes over where the buttons are to go and marking through the holes. Why didn't I think of that? No need to measure anything.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 144d (2 replies)
