The funny thing is I’ve had the same PSN account since the PS3, and it’s old enough to vote.

Platforms should always have that be the first check before falling back to multiple other data sources.

absquatulate@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 117d (3 replies)

And miss grabbing that juicy data of yours? Thats like leaving money on the table! Think of the shareholders, man.

Do people really put their date of birth in those things? I just scroll the year until I'm clearly past 18 years and that's when I'm born, January first 19-whogivesafuck. Quite possibly the best date to be born on.

thermal_shock@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 115d

Pick a date in history you like and use it. That way if it ever asks you to verify, you at least know dob.

paraphrand@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 117d

Some companies already use this heuristic to skip asking.

What're you going to do when Steam inevitably does this?

I'll laugh when it happens, given my Steam account is almost 23 years old.

I_Jedi@lemmy.today · 22 pts · 116d

If Steam becomes nonviable, then I will:

  • Download my backlog and look into cracking their reliance on Steam, if any.
  • Buy stuff on JAST, GOG, itch io, DLSite. Maybe DMM, Patreon, and Epic Games Store if I'm desperate.
  • Otherwise, well, you know how I'll get those games.

Steam is turning into a sour grape for me - I complied with their restrictive and ancient method of age verification for UK accounts but I kind of want to migrate off them (they also charge high fees for devs, make it ridiculously difficult for new devs to exist, can singlehandedly destroy a studio and are very much monopolising the PC games industry so there's also ethics) - in favour of GOG. At least with them you own your games, and can (shock horror) even choose whether or not to update and patch that way to glitch out of the map, or duplicate those orbs for currency, or anything else that doesnt comply with the specific way you're allowed to play with the world they built.

Damn, sorry, I should file this away into my 'rants' folder

MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 116d

You can own your games on Steam too. It is entirely up to the publisher/developer. Cyperpunk 2077 for instance has no DRM on Steam and can be played without it.

lyralycan@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 117d

Xbox has had this for quite a while now (although I haven't checked if that's UK exclusive)

lemmyng@lemmy.world · 28 pts · 117d (4 replies)

So when they say age verification, do they mean "show us your ID", or "enter your birthdate"?

REDACTED@infosec.pub · 8 pts · 117d (1 reply)

"enter your birthdate"

Technically would not that be age confirmation, not verification?

scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech · 3 pts · 116d

Also "attestation".

Blackmist@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 116d

I think it's "show us your face", if the Yoti app is involved.

However, it looks like the only limit is communication, and I've no interest in being communicated with by anybody on PSN thank you very much.

thermal_shock@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 115d

Show us your jimmy

Eggyhead@lemmy.world · 28 pts · 117d

I’m pretty sure my account itself is old enough to drink at this point.

BroBot9000@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 117d

Sony really eager to kill off communication on their system. Fucking bootlickers.

hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 115d

I find it funny. How they put out the demand to dox yourself on the anniversary of the PSN hack.

OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 117d

And after all this still no mods :(

EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 117d (2 replies)

Clarification for those of you who are also using an adblocker and get denied access to the site, this seems to be in the UK only and is yet another result of their age verification tear they’ve been on.

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de · 15 pts · 117d

not what the article says, the article specifically says:

The age-verification process will be implemented globally,

lyralycan@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 117d

I'm using an adblocker and get in just fine, may be random or it may be the js blockers I've implemented. Here's my list of lists in case:

Note for any NordVPN users, their URIs are blocked by HaGeZi. Same list temporarily had Tidal's URIs blocked as well but it seems to have been fixed.

So hypothetically if it is a picture taking app. And a bunch of not of age boys send in photos of not their face then could they then phone in and report the company for said photos?
