One is my name. The other is not.

N0t_5ure@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 81d

Just to be clear, it's Commander Data, not Commander Data.

supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 10 pts · 81d (3 replies)

Either way is fine but just don't come at me with "the data are conclusive"

violentfart@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 81d

You can tell someone is older or in academics/research when they say it like this.

For most people “data” is a singular set. It’s clearer to say “these sets of data are conclusive”, while if it’s a single study, “this data is conclusive”

Like why you don’t walk into a police station and say “there were murders everywhere” when you’re talking about crows.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 79d

This datum is conclusive!

Gumus@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 78d

In some languages the word "data" is always plural. It feels natural to say it like that in english, too.

I was looking for a NES game on GoG.

There is a right way to say that sentence. And a wrong way.

notabot@piefed.social · 8 pts · 81d (10 replies)

Which one do you hate more?

  • I was looking for a en ee ess game on gog.

  • I was looking for a ness game on gee oh gee.

Korhaka@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 81d (5 replies)

There are at least 2 more ways to say it, along with some even more cursed variants.

Say gog like the G in gif?

just2look@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 81d (2 replies)

Could be gog, jog, goj, or joj.

PrimeErective@startrek.website · 4 pts · 81d

Zjog, zjoj, etc

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 79d

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain a G at the end of a word is always pronounced as a hard G. So the latter two are out.

Jog is hilarious though, Imma start saying it that way

Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au · 4 pts · 81d (1 reply)

long E for nes, like neice.

TachyonTele@piefed.social · 3 pts · 81d

Lol pure evil

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 79d (1 reply)

an en ee ess

reptar@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 79d

Thank you!

PapaStevesy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 79d

I hate them both equally, I'd say "an NES game"

TachyonTele@piefed.social · 1 pts · 81d

CubitOom@infosec.pub · 7 pts · 81d (2 replies)

I was looking for a Nintendo Entertainment System game on Good Old Games.

TachyonTele@piefed.social · 4 pts · 81d

You understand

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 80d

Not anymore, technically:

GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GOG.com

zitrone@europe.pub · 2 pts · 79d (1 reply)

/aɪ wəz ˈlʊkɪŋ fɔː ə ɛn eː ɛs ˈɡeɪ̯m on gŏg/

tbh /gŏg/ is pretty hard to pronounce so i would probably say /ɡɒk/ like gock

TachyonTele@piefed.social · 2 pts · 79d

This is the kind of lore im looking for

bitjunkie@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 81d

Datums

AyuTsukasa@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 81d (2 replies)

Then there's me who says it both ways depending on the sentence.

Data in portuguese is normally spoken as Data, and means calendar date, while Data means the lay down command

Might I suggest a compromise wherein everyone is equally wrong:

dah-tah

PrimeErective@startrek.website · 5 pts · 81d

God forbid vowels have a consistent pronunciation throughout a word

Allero@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 80d

I call it both, depending on the mood

friend_of_satan@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 79d

You say data, I say data

You say gif, I say gif

Data, data, gif, gif

Let's call the whole thing off

everyone toe-may-toe, toe-maw-toe, to indicate both are fine. As soon as I say taw-muh-toe however, there is an issue.
