I really didn't understand his argument. How do LLMs replace a networked operating environment and all its APIs? There has to be some application protocol to communicate between the two systems. Is he really just arguing for open standards?

artyom@piefed.social · 40 pts · 75d

No one understands it because it makes no sense. Because he's lying. They remove it so you have to pay for their proprietary services, just like GM.

This is highly appealing to automakers, of course, because it gives them more control over the customer experience, which every automaker with a marketing budget (that’s all of them) is finding more and more opportunities to exploit, whether via subscriptions, integrated e-commerce, or straight-up ads

pulsey@feddit.org · 7 pts · 75d (4 replies)

no no, every car has its own standards, interfaces and api. Everytime you connect your phone, it will use an LLM to figure this out and map it to your phone.

portifornia@piefed.social · 9 pts · 75d (1 reply)

/s Thank goodness all APIs are perfectly documented so a slopbot can figure it out (every time), and build a ui on the fly, and not brick everything. 🙄

pulsey@feddit.org · 3 pts · 75d

every second time, songs are played backwards 😂

scytale@piefed.zip · 6 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Yeah, it’s just another way of saying they’re building their own proprietary system (likely with a paid subscription) that has all the same things under the hood, but with an AI front end that is controlled by voice commands. GM is already doing that (the proprietary system part). My Subaru’s basic functions like A/C can already be controlled by voice command. This is just extending it to entertainment and navigation controls with AI bullshit on top.

realitista@lemmus.org · 2 pts · 75d

This has been tried so many times and it always turns out to be shit.

ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Such a roundabout way of saying they can’t charge a subscription for CarPlay

CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d

They have been anti-CarPlay since day one too, they had fucking ALEXA in the things up until the last update

happy_wheels@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 34 pts · 75d

Rivian Software Chief can suck my nuts. AI will never replace my taste in music and my control over my media library!

Ebby@lemmy.ssba.com · 19 pts · 75d (3 replies)

Redundant? Yeah, maybe. So what? Do you need to save space on your infotainment partition?

With options, users develop -gasp- preferences. That would encourage competition and good UI practices. Heck, maybe keep ads to a minimum.

Rivian, go ahead and build something better. Make drivers/passengers WANT to use your app.

assembly@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Exactly this! If it’s better than CarPlay, I will use it. If it’s worse, I want to be able to use CarPlay. I’m old enough to understand that car infotainment systems do not keep getting updated and quickly fade into obscurity. I won’t buy a vehicle without CarPlay as I know it will keep working for a pretty long amount of time.

My 13 year old Mazda had a tab for Pandora in its touchscreen infotainment system.

lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 74d

build something better

But why would they do that when they can just shut out the competition entirely?

Is capitalism great again?

AM/FM and the Aux chord in the back of the class clowning around...

Snapz@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Thanks, in my cursory interaction with Rivian, I'd only had positive impressions. It's nice to now have the clarity to know that the disease of enshitification is alive and well in their hallways like the rest.

Thank you for dismissing any early goodwill I had for your company, chief software officer.

Haze@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 74d

I was excited for the R2 and R3, but they went full-touchscreen like Tesla. I'm just not interested in going backwards in UI.

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 11 pts · 75d

My goal is to avoid "AI" so I guess Rivian is now redundant to me.

9tr6gyp3@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 75d (1 reply)

Then why do car manufacturers keep selling your driving history to insurance companies and advertisers?

nosuchanon@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 75d

Because they all want more money and selling your data is easy to implement and still legal.

GreenKnight23@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 75d

just when I started liking them.

damn.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 7 pts · 75d

Wut.

LadyMeow@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 75d

Super. More disappointing shit.

Stupendous@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 75d (6 replies)

Somehow the old guard boring car vehicle brands, not GM - maybe not any American brand, are becoming desire brands/models. At worst, never sign up for a car subscription and teach the younger ones that haven't experienced a car phone mount. They're better today than in the past. Instead of finagling with clips, they have magnets

Squizzy@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 75d (5 replies)

The magnets fried my gps one time

Bo7a@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 75d (4 replies)

No.

Squizzy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d (3 replies)

Must be a coincidence. Everytime I mounted my phone it would get a fucked up reading on maps. My pixel doesnt have the issue but my samsung from years ago did.

lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d (2 replies)

Coincidence. Your phone has multiple magnets in it already.

Squizzy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d (1 reply)

Yeah I didnt think it was poor tech just dodgy magnet strength or me placing the patch in a bad spot

lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 74d

My Pixel's case has some pretty strong magsafe-compatible magnets. No issues in almost two years.

Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 75d

Not me in my twenty year old truck with the broken radio and the sound of my own thoughts

CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 74d

I drive a Rivian, it’s perfectly nice, mine is an R1T lease you’d have to be stupid to buy an EV right now with how fast they’re changing and while it’s nice in the sense that it’s quick and handles well it’s got serious issues with the GPS/infotainment it tracks you literally 24/7 and you cannot turn it off, there’s so many people on line talking about it and Rivian fanboys shouting them down about how they must be trying to cheating on their partners, like nah I just don’t consent to Rivian tracking me it’s really not that deep. The R1T has basically zero accessible interior storage and lots of things that should be buttons are hidden in a screen menu. I need a truck I live in the country and haul stuff in the bed on a very regular basis and I want an EV for very obvious reasons but the 24/7 tracking alone is a reason I likely won’t be getting a gen 2 R1T when my lease is up much less all the shitty software

deafboy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d

Wait, didn't they go bankrupt? How are they still around?
