The west has stopped quietly committing genocide against the wishes of it's people, started forcibly and loudly committing genocide against the desperate cries of it's people.

givesomefucks@lemmy.world · -10 pts · 81d (12 replies)

And Cenk still won't change the name of his media organization from the perpetrators of the Armenian genocide he spent most of his life denying...

Even know, he just admits the Aremenian genocide could be considered a genocide. But refusing to change the name of his company.

I don't know how or why genocide deniers are ever considered "the good guys".

Loads of conflicts is two groups of assholes fighting.

But there are podcasters out there who don't support any genocide too...

infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 23 pts · 81d (11 replies)

Omg shut the fuck up, we know he's a hypocrite. Everyone here knows this and agrees with you. But this is a much larger issue than one dildo's genocide denial. You're effectively muting discussion about ever-more authoritarian western governments unilaterally silencing dissent in favor of your pet soapbox. I'm willing to bet that everyone in this thread is 100% in agreement with you about Cenk but for the love of god please have a sense of priorities, talk about Cenk's hypocrisy somewhere that your energy will actually make a difference and not incidentally make it look like you don't give a fuck about Palestinian genocide (Because I'm guessing you do care about that [edit: Now in doubt]). Please.

givesomefucks@lemmy.world · -18 pts · 81d (10 replies)

You’re effectively muting discussion

No, I'm saying we shouldnt listen to a family of millionaires who made their money denying genocide on how bad genocide is...

Finding someone who agrees no genocide is valid, isn't a tall order.

And speaking out against genocide denial, is never a bad thing

I'm not just going to ignore it because your favorite streamer does it buddy

4am@lemmy.zip · 22 pts · 81d

Stop doing shit lib idpol purity tests here, you are effectively doing Israel’s work

infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 11 pts · 80d (3 replies)

I don't even sub to Piker but you do know that he is at odds with his uncle over that and other issues, right? He would agree with your stance on the Armenian genocide. He didn't leave TYT without reason. Anyway, the UK is picking and choosing which foreigners get to advocate which issues on UK soil in order to foment complicity with a current and ongoing genocide, and apparently you're in favor of that so you can have a very lovely day, thank you (Edited previous removed comment in bold to comply with mod rules on "incivility").

I don't even like Hasan, it's annoying how much "moderates" have forced me to be on his side lately.

infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 28 pts · 81d (9 replies)

I love Hasan. I wish more privileged voices were as concise and consistent and forceful on left issues like he is. If there were several dozen more people like him we wouldn't all have to couch our support for their advocacy with a milquetoast disclaimer about how we "don't even like them".

Hell, I'm a vegan and an anarchist. He regularly throws those aspects of my identity under the bus to offer a fig leaf to the unconvinced in his audience so that they listen to more central leftist ideas, and still I love him for that. He has millions of followers, I cannot fathom how impactful he has been to leftist advocacy all over the world in the past 5 years. I'm so fucking sick of people putting disclaimers on their support for him. I don't even sub to him and I love the guy. I know what critical support means and I give him my critical support on full blast.

ceenote@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 81d (2 replies)

Don't get me wrong, he seems like a good guy, but react streamers are objectively the lowest form of entertainer.

Putting someone else's content up on stream then walking off while your audience watches it is pretty... off putting.

infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 15 pts · 80d

About half of his content is interviews with activists / politicians and live-on-the-ground protest coverage. His "react" coverage is mostly training his audience to digest mainstream newsmedia through a leftist lens rather than dramaslop-type takes.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 80d

I thought that was intersection jugglers but like, you'll never guess what I do during the day. Now I gotta get a new entertainment job.

bilb@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 80d (1 reply)

I understand and feel your frustration. I don't think he's a bad guy, though, personally. And highlighting stories like this is only good, don't you think? He's a popular guy, being refused entry for holding and expressing popular views. This should be made common knowledge, don't you think?

Varpeggio@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 80d

givesomefucks@lemmy.world · -9 pts · 81d (10 replies)

It's still weird everyone ignores Cenk named his organization after the perpetrators of the Armenian genocide...

Armenian Genocide, campaign of deportation and mass killing conducted against the Armenian subjects of the Ottoman Empire by the Young Turk government during World War I (1914–18). Armenians charge that the campaign was a deliberate attempt to destroy the Armenian people and, thus, an act of genocide. The Turkish government has resisted calls to recognize it as such, contending that, although atrocities took place, there was no official policy of extermination implemented against the Armenian people as a group.

Or that the only reason Hasan has a platform is he's a nepo nephew....

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 81d (3 replies)

the only reason Hasan has a platform is he’s a nepo nephew…

Hasan's platform is Twitch and he's largely built up his following by doing the same influencer circuit as everyone else.

If he's got any aces up his sleeve, they're that he's gorgeous, he's quick witted, and he got in on the ground floor when DSA was blowing up

Jax@sh.itjust.works · -14 pts · 81d (2 replies)

Hasan's platform is Twitch and he's largely built up his following by doing the same influencer circuit as everyone else.

I don't think this is correct, both Hasan and Asmongold are a part of Night Media and I've seen no attempt by Hasan to leave. Hasan is also weirdly kiddy-gloved when talking about Asmongold, at least it was like this in the past.

Granted, Night Media employs a lot of people — I just don't believe Hasan got to where he is by simply hitting the influencer lottery.

MJKee9@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 81d (1 reply)

Is this some AI hallucination bullshit?

Jax@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 80d

Which part? Me claiming that him winning the influencer lottery doesn't seem random, or him working for Night Media?

Edit: Literally every source I can find attributes his success to his time in the Young Turks and The Breakdown, why the fuck are you all going to bat for a nepo baby? Is it because he says things you like?

ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works · 11 pts · 81d (2 replies)

'Young Turks' has a more generalized use. It's even got a disambiguation page on wikipedia.

The swastika is ackshullay an old Indian symbol...

The Young Turks committed multiple genocides, claiming you named it after a different organization named after the originals isn't the slam dunk you think it is, especially considering how recent the fucking Armenian genocide is

frankPodmore@slrpnk.net · -10 pts · 81d (3 replies)

I actually agree with Novara that Piker shouldn't be barred from entering the UK but this headline is very misleading.

The UK government has said the ban is because of his use of '"antisemitic tropes, such as the claim that Israel controls America" and comments about grooming gangs he made on Piers Morgan's YouTube show' and because of his support of a 'proscribed terror group' (i.e., Hamas). Nothing to do with his support of Palestine (I don't think that Hamas represents Palestinians any more than I think that Putin's party represents Russians).

Footer1998@crazypeople.online · 12 pts · 80d
  • hasan has been an avowed opponent of anti-semitism for his entire career, he has very consistently made a distinction between zionism and jews
  • hasan has never been on piers' show
  • hasan hasn't supported hamas and he has criticised them for human rights violations, but he has, quite rightly, pointed out that hamas is better than israel, because israel has killed 80,000+ innocent civillians in palestine as part of their genocide, whereas hamas is a resistance movement against a nuclear state supported by the world's largest military superpower

the media constantly lies to defend israel

theo@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 80d (1 reply)

I actually agree with you, but this comment is misleading. The UK Government has said none of those things and has not made any statement on this as referenced by "The Home Office has been contacted for comment."

The first quote was from The Community Security Trust, and the second from The Times.

frankPodmore@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 80d

Well, I actually agree with you, but actually the first quote was from The Times and the second quote was from Labour MP David Taylor.

I just thought it was fair to extrapolate that the reasons the government banned him were the same as those who publicly called for the ban, not separate reasons that no one who actually supports the decision has cited.

Hassan and Cenk do paid agitprop for the UK's adversaries. Why should any country let them come over and tour around the country undermining the government and bolstering conspiracy and driving extremists on both sides. Bet there here to do their favourite thing, undermine a liberal left government so the far right can win.

vagrancyand@sh.itjust.works · 27 pts · 81d (7 replies)

The UK is not under a liberal left government, and if you think Labor is even close to not being far right you're actually deluded.

Enkrod@feddit.org · -20 pts · 81d (6 replies)

"Labour is far right", you heard it here first folks.

Sure, they're not left enough by any definition, but far right and not even close to not being far right?

vagrancyand@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 81d (1 reply)

What does the following fall under? As a fun game I've included three quotes or headlines regarding Nigel Farage, and six regarding Starmer or the labor government. I can guarantee you will not be able to pick out the Farage ones (I have paraphrased to make googling them and cheating that way difficult.

Answered Yes under oath when asked whether he knew his staffer continued a long-term relationship with Jeffery Epstein after Epstein's 2008 conviction.

According to an FIDH report they have repeatedly lobbied for legislation and policy that directly supports and upholds the Israeli genocidal state, even when said policies would directly harm the UK and its citizens.

His attacks on Palestinian protestors — and protestors in general have been called a driving voice behind the single greatest regression in democracy in the UK since the Thatcher government.

He has stated Israel "has the right" to withhold, as well as disable all domestic sources of, power and water for Gaza.

He has "transformed the labour party to a place where Jews are welcome again" -- t(his one is easy, just hilariously direct.)

During his campaigning he has directly called into question the nationalization of the NHS and has argued limited to full privatization would directly benefit UK citizens.

During his campaign and through his time as a politician, he has directly and consistently worked against the Trans agenda, even when it was unpopular to do so.

His advisors have been anonymously quoted as saying "he does not believe trans women are women" and has publicly stated there was a 'desperate need' for trans people to identify themselves in public spaces as trans.

He has been quoted multiple times as saying the UK's "Open Border's" Policy needs to be ended and that it should not be so easy for "asylum seekers" to be granted asylum.

And here's one more for free:

He has stated the "Open Borders" Policy from previous governments has been a squalid chapter in British history and has left "stains" on the "british way of life." In the same vein, he has rallied against "immigrant rape gangs" using "legal loopholes" to come into the country.

::: spoiler spoiler Not a single one was about Farage. :::

On migration and trans rights they're cleaving pretty right wing.

On economics, they're still quite centre-left-ish.

And since everything is polarised these days, they get to be centre-left to the right, and moderate right to the left.
