He was an "angel" investor who dropped money on companies, then if they took off kicked out the founders and wrote them out of the company history as much as possible.
People have deified blowhards since time immemorial. Most people are cowards. They only want to ride the coattails of the biggest strongman they can find. Only difference is that physical strength is pretty meaningless in politics (and has been since the invention of guns), so being a strongman is just being a blowhard.
Just throwing it out there that nothing about Teslas valuation makes sense^1^ without being first to market with self driving, and with a real moat around it.

It makes sense when you see Teslas for what they are. They are a status symbol. They represent apartheid, colonialism, oligarchy, child exploitation and genocide. Whenever you see someone driving one, they are proudly stating that is what they support. The more they show support for those things without consequence signals it is open season for exploitation. Now we have an entire financial system built on exploitation. So when you see a high valuation for a company that makes it their symbol, it means the system would not exist without those ideas.

Now their valuation is in flux and people don't want to buy them for multiple reasons including all the bad shit you listed, but let's be real here, they can't sell it for an equivalent vehicle and a lot of people don't have the money to go without transportation for work or school to make a political statement.
If you buy a Tesla now? Yeah. I'd agree you're cosigning all that bad shit. But there's lot of people still driving them who can't afford to just buy another vehicle who didn't know and aren't doing that.

It was a mixture of my not paying attention and not seeing his arc inevitably going into politics. I regret buying it. To be fair its been a good car, once you get used to vastly lowered expectations of it not being full self driving, which is why I bought it. I'm older and dont know how long I can keep driving myself. So I suppose I was highly biased to trust. Not driving is going to suck. I live in a swampy climate.

Are you unaware of the existence of Waymo? You do realize that Tesla robotaxis have a human handler that follows every car because they aren’t actually self driving right?
I read that Waymo is no better at best. Weymo thinks it’s cheaper not to park their cars and have them drive and zip around residential areas all hours of the day and night instead. They are also prone to accidents as well.
for what its worth, waymos are endemic in my area, and ive certainly seen them misbehave a little and get into janky situations, but i am generally impressed with them overall. i see them doing things good defensive drivers do, for example, slowing down in ambiguous/tricky situations, etc. they seem to be generally working. however i also read somewhere that they have sweatshops full of people tending to them...
