You're correct. Around the time of the crusades, zealots would often read out passages from the bible to spice up the spirits and, possessed by their own spell, would end up fuming from the induced wrath. The fanatics would then form a tight circle around them and blow air continuously to cool them off, hence the shorthand "fans".
